Summary: An Important and Impressive Story
Review: Obivously this is the story of Michael Durant, famous as one of the downed Black Hawk pilots in "Black Hawk Down". Mr. Durant cuts to the chase in this book and the way it reads, it is as if he is sitting in the room telling you the story himself. Coming to terms with his ordeal in Somalia has not surprisingly taken some time to get over, or at least let the healing process start. His tone throughout the book changes obviously from talking about his growing up, to training and being accepted in the SOAR 160, to the day he was shot down in Mogadishu. What struck me was his somberness and complete showing of respect and humility when talking about the 2 Delta Force troopers who gave their life to save his. I think anyone would be grateful, but it is his words that put forth the thought that Mr. Durant was (I hate to use a cliche but...) pouring his heart into his writing when talking of those 2 men. The note written by one of the widows to Mr. Durant which they both thankfully agreed to print, was one of the most moving pieces of writing I have ever read.

From reading the book (and the title), you get the idea that it is not so much about his heroism, but his experiences. He also makes it apparent that this book is more a salute to his peers around him, both past and present, than it is about him.

Summary: Detailed story of an American hero
Review: Micheal Durant's 1993 story of being held captive by a faction of well armed Somalis in Mogadishu is one of the most harrowing, detailed and violent stories of modern warfare. Even though it is only about his own experience as a POW, it is very interesting and is a genuine page turner. Durant recounts almost everything that he experienced, from which day a certain food was brought to him, to what dreams he had on certain muggy Somali nights. What also makes this book one to read, is that although most of it is about his experiences during Operation Gothic Serpent in Mogadishu, he also recounts just as perilous tales of his time serving in Korea, Panama and Iraq as a helicopter pilot.

I am glad I read "Black Hawk Down" before "In the Company of Heroes." "Black Hawk Down" gives an overview of the entire battle, whereas once Durant is captured, the rest of "Company" is only about him in captivity.

This book is about one man's absolutely unbelievable courage in a situation most of us cannot even fathom. He is truly an American patriot, and deserves to have the world hear his story. "In the Company of Heroes" should be read by everyone.

Summary: A Silent Hero
Review: Mike Durant is what America's military, and especially its Special Operators, are all about. Durant went through an experience that most of us can't imagine, yet he never blamed anyone, or felt like he was owed anything. To show his unselfishness, Durant continued to pay homage to Gary Gordon and Randy Shughart throughout the book, despite the endeavor he went through. Mike Durant is a man for our children to look up to, and all americans to admire. Finally, Mike Durant is a soldier that us ex-soldiers can look at with admiration. He never tooted his own horn like David Hackworth, and also never thought of himself as better than the man next to him, also like Hackworth. This book is truly an experience more than anything else, and I would recomend it not only to military buffs, but to all who want to know what being a true soldier is all about.

Summary: A must read
Review: I'll never forget seeing Michael Durant's face on the cover of all those magazines and all over the nightly news all those years ago. I was heartbroken and afraid for him. That image has stayed with me a very long time, and probably will forever. I read his book in three days.

Thank God men like him exist in this world...

Summary: NSDQ!
Review: You've got to read this book!! Especially if you've read Blackhawk Down. The way he describes his experience...you can definitely 'paint the pictures' in your mind of each event as they unfold. Not to mention the emotions that you will feel, if you have any heart or compassion. This book will awe you, it will make you angry, it will make you laugh, and it can bring a few tears to your eyes...anybody else that has already read it would know what I mean.

Summary: The human side of war
Review: If you like your action fast and a writer who is blunt but sincere, this book will please you. Perhaps the only real history is seen through the eyes and hearts of those who lived it. It's not objective, but it will keep you in suspense. What stays with you, though, will be the author's fresh perspective.

Summary: An Example of what ALL Americans should be.
Review: This was one of the best books I have ever read. I did not want it to end. I shot though the book, a very easy read; compeling, sad, human, uplifting, and ultimately what AMERICA is all about. If I may, "We will not leave your behind."

Although CW4 Durant would never accept glory or praise for his actions, he is a hero of mine and I will be a better person for having read this book and understanding what sacrifice is all about.

Summary: Courageous and Uplifting
Review: I'm not gonna go into details of how great this book is. All of the other reviewers have done that but I would like to thank CW4(ret.) Durant for giving me the privelige of reading his story, and for introducing me to the courageous and dedicated people of the special operations community. This is not just a story, it is journal of the human spirit, that during its course will bring both laughter and tears. Once again thanks Mike. NSDQ.

Summary: Great book from an amazing Army Aviator and true hero
Review: CW4 Mike Durant reminds me why I joined the U.S. Army in his tale of bravery and heroism. He selflessly gives credit where due, once responding to being called a hero by saying "all I did was crash." He recounts the bravery of the men who sacrificed all to save his life, and gives riveting, enthralling, excruciatingly detailed accounts of his time as a POW in Somalia. I read this book in just two sittings--and only stopped the first time because I had to! Very captivating and extremely well written. Very detailed--you go thru almost two weeks of captivity with a true American hero as your commentator. NSDQ!
