Rating: Summary: finding a path to your soul Review: This is a book that changes the essence of your inner landscape. I discovered this book by chance, when reading reader rewiews on another book I was thinking about purchasing. I have read this book three times, and each time, another layer of inner memories begins to stir within me. I have brought this book to work and people are constantly picking it up and begining this amazing journey wihtin. This is not an easy book to read, but the time I have given to myself by reading it and processing the lessons has opened doors to places within my heart that I never knew existed. Thank you.
Rating: Summary: A puddle among oceans Review: The best thing about The Invitation is the first chapter: The invitation itself. Nice poetry. However, if you are a serious spiritual seeker, you are aware of the plight civilation has created for us. This societal design is seriously flawed, and the true spiritual seeker will realize the answer lies in a return to respect and co-existence for all living things which requires a self-less attitude - a departure from the <I deserve a break today> mentality and a return to community. But the message in The Invitation would have you believe that finding and maintaining a good relationship with a mate is the answer to all life's problems. If you are just starting on your spiritual journey, The subject matter explored in The Invitation is a pacifier that will need to be discarded as you mature. The meditations at the end of each chapter is the most juvenile advice of all. The emphasis on maintaining romantic relationships in this book reveals that the author is still wading through puddles instead of pulling up anchor and heading into spiritual oceans. Oriah Mountain Dreamer has a long way to swim before she reaches vital spiritual waters. Take your money and buy a pizza - it might be as enlightening and be a lot easier to digest.
Rating: Summary: From the Agent, Joe Durepos Review: Oriah's book is one of the very few personal spiritual memoirs that ring with utter clarity and honesty. Unlike much of what passes for spiritual writing today, Oriah engages the reader with no gloss --- here you will find the struggle and the pain of living at a deeper level --- and no promises of transcendence. Like the British novelist, E. M. Forster, Oriah's repeated invitation is to, "Only connect." The Invitation is a glimpse inside the life of a non-traditional, no excuses, ordinary, modern mystic.
Rating: Summary: Insightful and Passionate.... Review: "The Invitation" is an extrememly insightful way to look at life. The messages it teaches, in the poem itself, and the authors explaination of the poem, are life altering. Once reading this I don't know how any person could view their life, or their relations with others, in the same light. The book has taught me to live one day at a time and to really see people, including myself, for who, not what, they are. This is a book that can be read over and over again, learning something new each time....
Rating: Summary: Beautiful Review: I bought the book this summer in London, and paid way too much for it! I'd read the introduction to the book before, the Invitation poem, and had never seen the entire book. So I paid the huge amount, and I'm glad I did! The author is a very gifted woman, writing to not only express her thoughts, but to provoke ours. I re-read this book every so often for inspiration and hope. What a fabulous purchase on my part! :)
Rating: Summary: As I read the book, I feel a deep "yes" inside of me Review: I was entranced by the poetry of the introduction of this book, not quite sure of what each section meant. I had to buy it and, reading it, felt I could understand. The ideas are simple but so difficult for us to embrace, so wrapped up in what we think we should be instead of breaking out to find out what and who we really are.
Rating: Summary: Inspiring in many ways Review: This book touches on so many fundamental issues that all of us face on the path of life. Issues of love, betrayl, trust, faith and our individual spirits. I enjoyed the openess of the writing. It was encouraging to know that there are others out there struggling with and working with some of the same things I am. Yes, it is always nice to know that you're not alone! For anyone who is interested, if you enjoyed this book, you may consider _The Artist's Way_ written by Julia Cameron. I think _The Invitation_ (especially the guided meditations) is a strong complement to Cameron's text and vice versa. I would definately include _The Invitation_ on the suggested reading list at the end of _The Artist's Way_. Peace and energy to everyone doing this work.
Rating: Summary: An occasion well worth rising to. Review: I paced myself best I could, finished it this afternoon. I loved it. It sings on the page as a series of personal affirmations which can inspire the reader either to 'Yes, me too!' or to 'Yes, I also am different (thanks for the permission)' or 'Yes, I have been demanding too little of myself and of my life.' I think it will make a profound difference to many of those stirred to awareness of it by the poem of the same name, and also to those who are drawn to the book by its beauty, as I was. I am already anticipating the first rereading.
Rating: Summary: Insightful, challenging, thought-provoking. Review: The Invitation by its very title invites us to be fully present in our lives, living each moment with all of its joys and sorrows. Well -written, with specific examples from the author's life, the book allows us to examine our own lives, and challenges the reader to push the edges. The meditations at the end of each chapter provide specific ways for each of us to deepen our connection with life and spirit.
Rating: Summary: A profound and powerful tool for opening to life's truths Review: I found "The Invitation" to be a profound and powerful book. Because the author roots her insights in real stories of her life, not abstract theory or Kantian like analysis, the truths become accessible. I teach a high school world religions course, and have found that students who read the book come to me afterwards and ask where they can buy their own copies, something that is unique in my experience. Strongly recommended to those who are interested in opening more to the truths in their own lives.
