Summary: Emotional Self-awareness is Significant
Review: The reviews that degrade Goleman's work are rather petty. This book was not written to debunk the importance of IQ, but rather to explore the other side of humanity that we often overlook-emotionality. I believe this book has some sound insights into the conflict between what popular society has deemed most valuable and what in reality is most significant: the recognition of what evolution has given us as a species, which are our primal instincts, emotions, and how we can utilize our cognitive abilities to practice self control and awareness. I do agree, however, that this work is directed more towards a general audience, and if one wishes to explore further the underpinnings of emotional experience I suggest reading works from Joseph LeDoux.

Summary: people in my field should read this
Review: This should be mandatory reading for all physicists. I love this book. At the very least it will help me deal with the cold repressed atmosphere common in physics.

Summary: an emotional attack on merit by the bureaucrats among us
Review: Sounds like a great self esteem salve for the large body of lazy, socialist leaning, public school educated, government mandate employed/affiliated worker (education, medical industrial insurance complex, welfare). It is also like earlier quality circle type theories, a way for nontechnical and bureaucratic types in all walks of American society to continue their assault on true merit and private economic choice. One does not need to read the references to discern the bias and spin - he readily admits that the examples are from a base of intelligent people. And I, as an employer, if free from government and legal intervention, would keep the ill-tempered genius to the very end.

Summary: ING. EMILIO CRISTANCHO GUEVARA; edfasa@hotmail.com
Review: ING. EMILIO CRISTANCHO GUEVARA; edfasa@hotmail.com This is one of the best books on the market for Emotional Intelligence; because it uncovers the real truth of why many talented (high IQ) persons do NOT succeed in life, and sometimes cause more problems for themselves and for others; and the sad part was that it was never taught at the University level , so I am very glad to hear that at Harvard ( and the University of California and many other excellent universities) they are beginning to teach this tremendously important subject that will give at least 70% of success in everybody life: personal, professional and business life. This book was the answer to many of our questions that we had about business, professional and corporate success, because without emotional intelligence is very difficult to achieve lasting and enduring success, perhaps some people minght achieve "temporary" success with only high IQ, but in the long run everybody needs both good IQ and also good EQ , to be able to achieve lasting success in his : PERSONAL, PROFESSIONAL @ CORPORATE life. This should be a required text in College, Master and Doctoral programs all over the world, to be able to graduate more integral and competent executives which will have better control over their emotional lives and consequently private and professional lives. By the way , one (there are more reasons) of the major reason why we have underdeveloped countries is because of the low EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE of at least 30% of the people living in them, thus, this is a world problem that should be dealt with at the earliest convenience, to be able to help Millions of persons all over the world. Sincerely : ING. EMILIO CRISTANCHO GUEVARA ; e-mail: edfasa@hotmail.com

Summary: I found the book useless
Review: This book did absolutely nothing for me. I found it to be very insubstantial and totally inapplicable to real life. Easy to put it back down. Like most pop psychology and self help books, it talks a lot and says nothing. I think that Goleman is just another guy in search of book sales.

Summary: I am smarter than I thought I was!
Review: For those of you with 1500 on your SAT's and a 4.0 in school...good for you! But apparently, I, the average student, am just as intelligent. And if I can read this book, I must be REAL smart because it was not easy reading!

I used this book to make a case for a 3.1 student with 1000 on her GRE's to get into graduate school. E.I. is one of the best books out there and every parent should read it.

Summary: A fresh outlook on something too often overlooked.
Review: This book is an good analysis of something we tend to overlook in our dayly lives and within our society. Those who had trouble with this book perhaps have had a little too much conditioning them selfs.

Summary: Not much here
Review: Goleman introduces brain anatomy to describe how the brain processes emotions - expecially the amygdala and the neo-cortex. Brain Anatomy is assumed to be a result of Darwinistic evolution. Much of the book states the obvious. Emotional health contributes to success. Emotional awareness contributes to emotional health. The benefits of religious conviction on emotional health are not mentioned at all!. If you value your time, skip directly to the appendices. There is some good stuff there.

Summary: Good info, very bad written
Review: Mr. Goleman shows with this book two things: that E.I. really matters, and that he doesn't know how to write. I've almost finished the book, and had counted 26 times the phrase "as Dr. ... told me," buagh! This book is full of knowledge (very few from Mr. Goleman, if any at all), and deserves a read even againts its author.

Summary: A peep into the meta-world
Review: It developes you personality somehow, and makes you more aware of yourself. It looks into OCD and depressions too, which really interests me. After reading this book, you're sure to better-control your emotions!
