Rating: Summary: Broaden Your Perception of Intelligence Review: Emotional Intelligence is an intelligent look at intelligence. Goleman's "Emotional Intelligence" is a refreshingly thoughtful book on the issue of intelligence. Shackled by "intelligence" tests and by curricula that define such topics as the arts and music as peripheral, we have come to assume a far too narrow definition of intelligence - and of ourselves. Goleman blasts through those constraints and thoughtfully reminds us that we are far more than our SAT scores. This is a very important book historically. Another important book you should read is The 2,000 Percent Solution, that presents effectiveness in a way both enlightened and practical - like Goleman, seeing us as who we really are and guiding us in using our full emotional potential to do our best in this life. May there be many more books like these! I also recommend Howard Gardner's work in these same areas.
Rating: Summary: Excellant Review: I was pleased with the many different areas that Emotional Intelligence spanned. It has something to offer for everyone, from every walk of life.
Rating: Summary: What most of society doesn't realize-roots of real problems Review: This book is right on! The fact is so many people today come up with these band-aid solutions to fix problems in society. This book highlights the importance of emotional intelligence, which is overlooked by society today. By encouraging kids to develop a full range of abilities that they will use to succeed in life, school becomes a place it should be - an education in LIFE SKILLS. Anyone who bashes this book is lying to themselves and have already fallen victim to societies scams and politics. TRUTH... it is the most powerful thing in life but will always be threatened by mediocre minds! Thank you so much Mr. Goleman - you are a true hero.
Rating: Summary: Best self-help book I've read yet. Review: Not only did this book help me to understand where my own problems were, it taught me how to keep my children from the same troubles. This is a self-help, and a parenting book rolled into one.I rented this book on cassette, and fully intend on buying the book so I can have it look back on from time to time as my children and I grow.
Rating: Summary: HUH? Review: With Eating disorders crippling women, I was dismayed that Daniel was emotiionally defiecet in what he is trying to teach: EMPATHY. THe short, brief section on eating disorders was irresponible for what is a COMPLEX disorder that is not so simple. Daniel does not even look at the societial demands that are placed on women (we have not even passed the ERA yet for christ sakes, women are not seen as equal by societies standards, of course this would cause one to distort and malprocess their emotions) He is actually blaming these women for something that has not been taught to them and denied them in this dominating male society; women's emotions have been stifled for centuries. Daniel is not an expert here on eating disorders, in fact I find his quick look at this problem as GLIB and absoulutley without empathy...The solution was SO intellectualized I had to laugh, how ironic.
Rating: Summary: Well Written, But Poorly Thought Out Review: Although the writing style was clear and coherent, the content, unfortunately, was not. I believe that this book will serve primarily as a "feelgood pill" to those that were not blessed with (the more "rational") intelligence. It is useful to realize that intelligence, as measured by IQ and SAT tests, is composed of multiple facets. But to create a different, and competing standard of intellect, and attempt to raise it above the level of reason and knowledge, is simply disingenuous. While the writing style is good, I think that this book simply plays to the current, rampant American anti-intellectualism, rather than to common sense. Nobody denies that a healthy emotional life is important to happiness, but until we Americans realize that what we need is not more "fuzzy thinking", spiritualism, and credulity -- rather, what we need is to put our noses to the grindstone, so to speak, and take our place as the world's leading INTELLECTUAL superpower, as opposed to just the world's leading MILITARY superpower -- until that day, we are doomed to a slow slip into second-rate status. Books like this are just sour grapes, showing us that we "didn't want all that intellectual stuff, anyway."
Rating: Summary: A breakthrough study - Simply Fantastic Review: A must read for all those who: a. have a family or b. are employed or c. are employers or d. are doctors or are just present in this world. A great book which demystifies the myth surrounding IQ. EI is the rule of the day and successful people score high on EI.
Rating: Summary: An excellent educational text. Review: This book is more than just a 'self help' book but rather a challenge to the conservative, older mind-sets of intelligence. The basis of what is intelligent needs to be changed and the author of this book provides a good argument. He accurately portrays a society that stresses I.Q. tests as the ultimate measure of intelligence. However what's more important, doing well on exams or being able to communicate effectively with others? If you have an open mind, and enjoy a different point of view, this book is a great read!
Rating: Summary: Goleman's book reaches its goal Review: I've read most of the readers' reviews and I my thought about Goleman's book was absolutely RIGHT: it reaches its goal. What makes Emotional Intelligence book unique and very interesting is that it shakes the brains and pushes the reader to think. Goleman is not supposed to think for the people but to help them think right and that's what he put in the book. This is not an easy task, isn't it ? I like the way the book is written, though not scientifically consistent, but it gives chance to anyone, whatever his background, to embrace the subject and SPECIALLY to be aware of EI for his life sake and ALSO for other people lifes' sake. Goleman could have written a scientific version of the same book and if he did many of us would not have read it or review it. Here's how Goleman's book reached its goal. Reading the book for me and for other people I met was already a therapy as it was for all who posted a review here. (you can discover that when reading between the lines) Bravo Goleman !
Rating: Summary: Terrible Review: This book is very bad. The book is here to make money. I'll tell you what this book is about. It's so the stupid people who fail classes, can't think, have the vocabularies of six year olds, can feel better. Plain and simple. It's so the dumb frat boys and sorority chicks who have no brains can boast about their high EQs.
