Rating: Summary: A bit long winded Review: I was a bit disappointed with the content of this book. I was looking for a personal trainer in a book and instead found someone repeating himself for half the book on the mental part of getting in shape. I have the motivation, now I want the technique. Bill Phillips spends most of the book just trying to motivate you, but doesn't give enougth detail on technique and how to set up a program personalized to each individual. There are no references on the best number of reps, how fast or slow you should lift the weights, how to individualize a program and what machine/exercises are best for each individual (especially differences between men and women). I have found another book that focuses on women only to be more beneficial to meet my specific needs and help plan with my individual schedules and body. Bill is too much hype and not enougth muscle.
Rating: Summary: Excellent book Review: I'm on my second 12 week program and am astounded with the results. The book is a well written guide to building great long term health. It addresses a wide range of questions on all the topics that are covered, with great weight training examples, possible diets, and progress charts.
Rating: Summary: Fitness and weight loss for Dummies Review: I find Mr Phillips book both sound, simple, effective and easy to follow. I have been directly involved in the fitness industry for many years and am always surprized and shocked at how many people don't understand basic exercise and eating principals. They lift wrong, they aerobicize to death and get frustrated when they don't get the results they want in the time they have established. This book allows a basic, concreate easy to comprehend information that any individual, be they a novice or have background in fitness and nutrition can follow. It's all spelled out from diet to lifting to cardio. It doesn't get any simpler. He also gives rationale and fact behind why things work or don't work in understandable language. This gives credibility to the info shared and encouraged. Nothing worthwhile comes easy. You have to give some to get some back. Bill sets it up. It's up to you to follow through. It's not about his products, the nutritional aspect can be followed just with food. It's a journey well worth pursuing, espicially for the "yo yo dietiers" who havn't found truth and honesty in the multi-million dollar diet industry. I highly reccomend it! Rating: Summary: This stuff works! Review: Rarely ever do you find a fitness handbook that is so extensive like Bill Phillips's "Body for Life." While he says that without some type of consistent workout your bodily fitness won't be reached, he also explains various diets and nutritional programs that aid quite a bit to your healthy feel-good feeling. The author also shares some cute little stories along the way, and these keep every reader encouraged and motivated to keep on going. Regarding mental fitness I found Dietmar Scherf's "I Love Me: Avoiding & Overcoming Depression" book very interesting and helpful.
Rating: Summary: Not so average results Review: I keep reading reviews and it seems some of them are from people that didnt read the book. On the program you eat more then any other diet i have seen. Six meals, six carbs, six protiens, veggies and stuff. The exercise routine is fundementally sound, not break through stuff if you are an athlete as myself. The results are as follows: I lost 100 lbs since September. almost 200 lbs from 2 years ago <not that im proud i got that heavy>. Bill does push his EAS products but its a recomendation and a good one, there some of the finest on the market. He never says you must get it though. I read the book four times, its a fast read and helpful if your tired of not looking you best. Thank you Keith "Tiny"
Rating: Summary: It Works! Review: Just wanted to let you know that this is an excellent book describing Bill Philip's Body For Life program. It is concise and easy to read. It has everything you will need to know to complete a 12-week challange. It also includes daily progress reports and real-life success stories. It is well worth the time to read and it just may change your life!
Rating: Summary: To ALL the Naysayers Review: I have found this program to be excellent. There are many people out there who have complaints - but these people will complain about anything. First of all, you CAN be a vegetarian and use this book. Just supplement the meat with high protein vegetables or dietary supplements Second, some readers complained about eating 6 balanced meals a day. Well, I have one thing to say to them: You CANNOT get in shape without eating right. What do you want? A book that says you can take a pill and lose fat and gain muscle? This is laziness! Third, you don't NEED the Myoplex or ANY of the supplements for this program. They are expensive, yes. But Bill recommends them only if you don't have time to cook a lot of meals. I bought Myoplex and other supplements in the beginning, but I don't anymore because of the cost. I am doing just fine on this program. Finally, this is NOT a low carbohydrate "diet." I eat carbohydrates with every meal. Everything from oatmeal or other cereal in the morning, to bread for sandwiches. People who call this a "low-carb" diet are responsible for the low carbs themselves. Bill CERTAINLY doesn't recommend a low carb diet. He DOES recommend a "lowER carb, well-balanced way of eating" Here's the deal: If you want to lose weight and gain muscle, there is only ONE way to do it. That is to eat better and exercise more. Anyone who does otherwise is kidding themselves. Congratulations to all who have succeeded and to Bill Phillips for writing such a helpful, life-changing book.
Rating: Summary: Simple, yet Profound Fitness Review: I have read just about every book out there on fitness/diets/nutrition. There are a lot of books out there that are completely at odds with mainstream nutritional ideas (e.g., ketogenic or extremely low carb diets). Body for Life is based on simple principles-- ones that we all know about-- and ones that actually work. This book is not advocating any strange zero carb or liquid protein diets. The nutritional part of the book recommends eating smaller amounts more frequently and consuming healthy low fat proteins and "good" carbs that are relatively low in processed sugar. The book also recommends eating a lot of veggies and staying away from sweets completely (except for your one free day per week, when you can eat whatever you want!) This is not news to anyone-- is it? It's just a common-sense, relatively low-calorie diet. Just a note on supplements that many of the reviews have made a big deal about: everyone should take a good vitamin/mineral supplement regardless of whether or not you are on an exercise program; and . . .you don't have to drink Myoplex shakes to follow the program outlined in Body for Life (and you don't have to buy one single EAS supplement to enter the contest-- which is free to enter for anyone). The real genius of this book is in the fitness section-- Bill Phillip's real area of expertise. We've always heard it said that we need to exercise, but what does that mean? As Bill points out, so many people go to the gym and don't have a plan. They wander around and don't make the most of their workout time. Then they wonder why their body hasn't changed for the better. Body for Life shows you exactly what to do to make the most of your workouts in the shortest time possible--something we all can appreciate. The book is written for everyone (beginner to advanced) and it is very specific. You will never be caught at the gym wandering from machine to machine, trying to figure out how they work and copying someone else's routine. Body for Life teaches you how to create your own personal workout and achieve your best results. The pictures on the cover are real! My husband and I are on this program and plan to stick with it for life. It's a more effective, more compact way to work out and we're getting the best bodies of our lives. Not to mention it is affecting every other area of our lives (we even had the courage to start our own business from home-- and my husband says it is because of his new found self-discipline from following the Body for Life program). If you really want to change your body and your life, and you have the courage to work hard and stick with the program, then this is the book you need.
Rating: Summary: Excellent - Back To Basics Review: I've been a runner/gym exerciser for many years. Seems like I gained 2 or 3 pounds a year working my way up to maybe 20 pounds overweight. I bought the book for motivation and got more than I paid for. In my 10th week and have lost 15 pounds of fat and gained at least 5 pounds of muscle. The incredible thing was I had to cut back on my normal workouts. It's all about basics - dump all junk food, eat good proteins for re-building, rest muscle groups after workouts, allow yourself a total rest/eat what you want day. I know I'm doing better than some of the 5 day per week gym rats. I wish I had the book 20 years ago.
Rating: Summary: You will be hungry all the time! Review: This diet is almost impossible to follow.I work outdoors in construction, you have to eat six times a day.You need to belong to a gym or have thousands of dollors worth of equipment.Don't waste your money or risk your health!
