Rating: Summary: This is not a quick fix this is a lifestyle change... Review: I would absolutely recommend this book. Here's why: most people have all the fundamental tools of fitness, but its the direction in application that is missing. This book will define what your body requires physically and nutritionally to achieve the level of fitness you would like to reach. Another review on this page suggests that this is a quick fix, this is in no way a quick fix. This is a lifestyle change. If you are following the book step by step and not seeing results, then your INTENSITY levels may not be what you think they are. This book is about pushing the boundaries and the limitations that you have set for yourself. The meal suggestions are just that ... suggestions. Remember, this is a science there are clear cut studies on how to increase lean mass. It does require an increase ammount of protein and possibly l-glutamine to decrease the chance of your body going into a catabolic state. If you can get that from other foods great!! I drink the shakes because they are easy for me. I can grab one and go without worring about what I am getting. EAS uses top notch ingredients, personally I love the strawberry shakes. I am halfway through my first challenge, I have lost 8 inches total and I plan to make this program my lifestyle. I hope this review is helpful.
Rating: Summary: Don't buy this book Review: I don't recommend this book. I bought it, and followed the program EXACTLY as suggested for 12 weeks to the letter, drinking those horrible shakes that are not at all tasty, but I did it. The results: No weight loss or reduction in my waistline whatsoever, no muscles either. You might say, "well, this guy must have done it wrong", but no, I checked, re-checked, I was following the directions exactly as Billy said in the book. IN fact, I called the 1-800 number several times during the 12 weeks, talked to the "experts" at the end of the line, and most of them seemed more interested in selling me the EAS products than helping me find out why I was not losing weight, even selling dangerous stuff like ephedrin based supplements. If this is the kind of company Billy is running, I think it is insincere and incompatible with the presentation in his book. He talks very inspiringly in his book, but his company seems to reflect a very different philosophy, more concerned with making money than helping people. I was extremely dissapointed, I even wrote to him explaining the situation, and got no reply back at all. Billy is just one more of those who makes millions out of the hopes and energies of those who truly want to improve their bodies and get the motivation to go do it. Objectively speaking, I think it was good for my heart and strength, but it did not reduce my waistline at all, with my weight remainig basically the same. In summary, this book advocates a fix it for everyone weight loss formula, and it simply does not work for everyone. The net result is that I worked very hard, and then was disillusioned with the entire process to the point where I no longer want to work out ever again. So, if you are going to embark on weight loss, I suggest the following: Find and do excercises you will ENJOY, otherwise it will never be sustainable in the long run. Second, get a weight trainer who knows about nutrition. With him/her, work on a program to reduce weight with both diet and excercise, that makes sense for your body, and that is sustainable in the long run. If it is not, then you will fail despite your good intentions. You will have to try out different eating patterns, and then see which one works for you and is also healthy for you. You must have patience and be willing to learn what works for you and what does not. There are no quick fixes, not even in 12 weeks.
Rating: Summary: This really works! Review: I bought this book in July, 2002. In 12 weeks, I lost 15 lbs. (from 145 to 130, I went from a size 10 to a size 6) and I have managed to keep it off for over a year. It has completely changed my way of eating and it helped make exercise a regular part of my life. In the first 12 weeks, I was very strict and followed the plan almost to the tee (I had to fiddle with it a bit because I'm vegetarian). Now that I've reached my goal, I find that I don't have to be as strict to maintain my weight. I feel healthier than ever and I eat mostly whatever I want (that's because following the plan makes you want to eat healthy things that make you look and feel good). Bill Phillips puts everything in VERY simple terms and the plan is very easy to follow. What could be easier than doing 20 mins of cardio every other day and 45 mins of weights every other day? You get a free day where you don't work out and eat whatever you want (literally whatever - pizza, pasta, chocolate, ice-cream). Like I said, I'm not that strict now, so I'll have a little bit of those things on other days too, and now I tend to work out 4-5 days a week instead of 6. But still, it's a much healthier lifestyle than the one I had before and it's all thanks to this book. The photos inside the cover jacket shows all these people with great results. Some people are distrustful of those photos, I am not. Regardless, the most striking difference to me isn't even in their bodies, but in the genuine happiness and pride that shows on their faces in the after-photos. Older people look younger and not-so-pretty people are great-looking, mainly because of the confidence that exudes from their bright faces. Try it - What's the harm? The book is [not expensive] and it's 12 weeks. If it doesn't work for you, it wasn't a great loss. But if it works for you, like it did for me, then it'd be the best [money] you ever spent.
Rating: Summary: When all else has failed, get back to the basics Review: This is the way exercise and eating should be for life. It's not a crash diet. It's the way you should eat and exercise for the rest of your life. And because of that you learn good patterns of living, not just eating and exercise, but goal setting, time management, self esteem, and giving to others. The book is an easy read, and entertaining, even for those that are not big readers. This program changed my life. ........ check out my links section to help support me as an athlete and purchase this book through my affiliate program. I am also more than willing to help you through your 12 week program, I don't charge anything for my help even though I am currently a certifed personal trainer. I just want to help change your life.
Rating: Summary: Just do it! Review: This is an easy plan to transition into. Don't let the 6 meals frighten you or make you say you don't have time. I am very busy during the day & used Protein shakes as my mid-morning and mid-afternoon snacks to cut down on time.
Rating: Summary: My new mantra.. Review: The basics in Bill's approach really do work. This story serves to get you off the sofa and into a new, healthier lifestyle. The book is a little too heavy on the hype maybe, and his plugs for EAS supplements didn't get past my radar. However, his message is a postive one and you can't knock a guy for that. It has changed my life.
Rating: Summary: Transform yourself in only 84 days! Review: Body-For-Life is more than a step-by-step guide to transforming your body and life for the better. It is a call to action! Bill Phillips urges you to start making measurable, significant, and positive changes by managing your nutrition, exercising consistently (and intensely!), and supplementing smart. For those of you who wonder about Bill's credibility - his knowledge about fitness and physique transformation is top-notch. He founded Muscle Media magazine and was CEO of one of the most successful supplement companies on the planet (EAS in Colorado). Bill's message is clear: With clearly defined goals, actions, and reward - you can accomplish anything you set your mind to. His book contains powerful stories of ordinary people who made extraordinary changes in their bodies and lives. I found their heartfelt "personal essays" to be inspirational. In fact, I could relate to some of their life situations and that's what kept me from putting the book down. I read this book from cover to cover in one sitting. Perhaps the most amazing thing about this book is the fact that Bill donates its proceeds to the Make-A-Wish Foundation - conveying further the importance of contribution to those less fortunate, which is something that Bill writes about in many of his past editorials. I highly recommend this book to anyone who needs a jump-start to their fitness progress. The nutrition and training advice might not be the most comprehensive, nor detailed. However, the basic overall life plan that he prescribes is solid and healthfully structured. I believe that this book gives you a realistic, easy-to-follow, lifestyle guide to improve the quality of your health. No matter what level of fitness you are presently experiencing - this book will provide you with benefits that go beyond looking and feeling good. It will help you find the inner strength to persevere through your hardest challenges and continue to grow and help others along the way. It has certainly helped me!
Rating: Summary: Could be distilled to 20-30 pages Review: The book could be shortened dramatically if the motivational fluff was excluded. But without the fluff, who could get excited? Simplistic, non-scientifice, but still compelling. I'll start exercising tomorrow.
Rating: Summary: MIDWEST BOOK REVIEW Review: My husband asked me to read this book. I am starting to wonder why my loved ones keep giving me books on health, weight and nutrition. Maybe they are trying to tell me something; they'll never admit it though. However, this is another one I am glad that they gave to me. It really was quite interesting. I like how the author starts out with his statement, "When you gain control of your body, you gain control of your life."That gave me food for thought. Whoops, should not have said food I suppose! It did make me think however just how true this statement is. He speaks to you about your reasons for wanting to change, makes you think a little bit.Just why do you want to better yourself? He also has a whole section on myth's for example, the longer you exercise, the better. Do you think this is true? If you do, you are dead wrong. The author talks about different foods and what they will do for your body, gives you a diet plan and has an entire section on exercises with photo's.At the end of the book he includes a section of progress reports that you can fill out to chart your progress. A lot of good things inside of the pages of this book. I believe all you out there looking to improve your body and how you feel about yourself would really find this work interesting. I give it a thumbs up.
Rating: Summary: Very sad- BFL in a review Review: This book is a motivational book. Thats about it. You want to know what to do? Eat 1 serving of carb, 1 serving of protein 6 times a day. Do aerobic exercises for 20 minutes and strength training for 45 minutes alternating days, 6 days a week. Yup, I just literally gave away this entire book in 2 sentences. The rest of this book is fluff and filler, poor dietary advice, and crafty advertisements for his Myoplex products that aren't that great. Hey, buy his magazine while you are at it! This is nothing more than just clever marketing that seems to appeal to most people, but offers no insight or anything new or creative, he literally uses, what about 3 pages of the entire book going over an exercise routine and really provides nothing specific. You want to lose weight and fill out, tone up nicely? Eat reasonably and exercise daily. You'll get the same results. Just don't buy this book to hear the same thing. I highly don't recommend this book as like I said, its an advertisment and marketing scheme that does nothing but upsell Bill's [crummy] products and make promises that you too can lose weight if you eat appropriately and excercise, go figure!
