Summary: Hang In There, Huggy Bear !
Review: I found the overall approach outlined in this book to be exactly what my wife and I were looking for. At age 67, I can't find many books that address the issues that I am concerned with; building slowly from pretty poor physical shape after decades of neglect, working out at home rather than at a gym, and using low-cost equipment. After the first 12 weeks, we are both on our plan and looking forward to the next 12 week program. We now regularly jog for a few minutes a day on the beach and proudly display our dumbbells and ankle weights. The pictures in the book show exactly what to do and what not to do, and there are enough alternatives that we can select the exercises that fit our fitness level. I borrowed this book from a friend, and will pass it on to another friend now that I have absorbed its message.

Summary: Get To The Point!!
Review: This book was mostly motivational for me. I'm in my second week and have lost 7 lbs. I'm 5'9", and started at 176 and would like to get down to a hard, lean 160. I have exhausted many books about fitness from Oprah to Ahhhnold Schwartzenegger (very helpful). This book essentially made me realize I lacked intensity in my work outs. The supplements are a hose job. The best deal I've seen so far is a magazine called nutrition express. Get it from the their web site.

I like the book, but the writing drove me crazy. If I ever hear the words, "You see...," or, "Think about it...," something is going to hit the fan. Content is good, but get to the point quicker. I'm at stan@micron.net should you want to check in on my progress at the end of the 12 weeks which will be on Feb 27, 2001, or want to see my before and after photos!

Summary: Bill Phillips is a Con Man - BFL is more useless filler
Review: I think I can say here that I have a fairly extensive relationship with Bill Phillips, the author of Body For Life. I have been purchasing nutritional products from his company EAS and recieving his supplement and training guides for 6 or 7 years.

In 1996 I had a toxic reaction from ingesting one of the supplements he touted as the dosage in the supplement built up in my system and caused me serious physical side effects. His entire focus is to make himself rich at any cost - and thanks to the 1989 Bill authored by Jesse Helms, no supplement has to contain what it says it does or be proven safe so long as it says "this product is not intended to treat or diagnose any disease."

A large number of people have come to serious physical harm as a result of this man and other unscrupulous members of the supplement community more interested in short term profit than the efficacy or safety of their products.

Now Mr. Phillips is attempting to recast himself as a man of the people - bringing fitness to the masses. It is complete bunk. All that's in this book is the same worthless recycled info that's in every other of these overpriced, underuseful tomes. If you're serious about getting fit you are much better off consulting w/ staff at your local gym and bringing a notebook to write down what you hear. In many cases in 15 minutes you can have a plan to follow that is easy and makes sense. All Mr. Phillips brings to the table is the 'less is more' credo that seems to indicate that somehow if you run at different speeds you can get more accomplished in 20 minutes than 30. It is ridiculous and it is sad that in an age where physical fitness has reached so many people in this country that such drivel can be plausibly accepted by so many.

What will get you results is stick-to-itiveness and a simple plan. Before you buy this go to your local bookstore and flip through Arnold Schwartzenegger's Modern Encyclopedia of Bodybuilding. Many of the pictures may seem intimidating but the principles of fitness and rational plan for results can be used to transform your physical shape. Check into the alternatives closely before you buy, ask people at your health club what they read and who they listen to. The people who are in the know, be they behind the desk or out on the floor with you are almost guaranteed to have better material than the morally challenged Mr. Phillips can provide.

Good Luck All

Summary: Pricey!
Review: Of course lifting weights, eating protein, and doing moderate aerobics will work. What is a scam are the supplements. You should not have to shell out 200 bucks a month for supplements. You can eat protein and get other supplements at a cheaper price.

Summary: The structure, motivation and inspiration I needed.
Review: I've been obese most of my life and have tried a number of things, but "Body-for-Life" is the program that finally clicked. I've just finished my first 12-week Challenge and am very pleased despite facing a number of obstacles. If fact, I think the program helped me face those barriers. This is NOT a short-term fix, but a lifestyle roadmap. Now I plan in 12-week segments for my exercise and nutrition plans. Now I set short-term goals to reach the long-term vision I have for my life. The structure that "Body-for-Life" provides will be the answer for many people who have failed to plan. The planning DOES pay off and Bill Phillips has written a great book.

Summary: Great for most, short-term only
Review: The "Body-For-Life" program is excellent program for those wanting to get in good shape. Bill Phillips has excellent marketing, communication and motivation skills that allow him to build a simple program that most people can follow very easily. Both the diet and exercise programs will return positive results *in most people*.

However, because of the programs simplicity, it does overlook many of the factors that makes the difference between good results and phenominal results. For example, most bodies will quickly adapt to the exercise program. Also, in most people, faster gains can be maid with a more agressive exercise program.

His theory on "high-point" with 20 minute cardio sessions, while interesting, is highly debated by most experts and like most theories, there is no proof to back it up.

The "Body-For-Life" nutrition program simplifies the proper carbs/protien/fats ratios as well making it less than idea. As a health freak, I also criticize his lack of attention to veggies and other fresh foods.

Overall, following the 12 week program should produce excellent results is most people, but following it for any longer would be unwise due to the body's adaptation to the workout and the detrimental long=term effects nutritionally.

Summary: Great book to get you started on the road to better health
Review: I bought Body-For-Life after accepting the twelve week challenge. It is not the most comprehensive book in the world, but it is great simply because it is so concise. Bill's writing style is to the point and free from tangents. Every page is filled with useful tips, and the overall program is the best I've found. No tricks, no fads, just plain old planning, dedication, and hard work. You won't believe your results! A great buy for someone looking to make a positive change in their life.

Summary: A million people can't be wrong
Review: I don't understand why some people have to put down the good that others strive to do. Bill Phillips and all the wonderful people at EAS have created a fantastic way of life that will fit anyone's schedule. I recommend this book and program to anyone who will listen. I have been overweight my entire life, and I have tried every diet on (and off) the market. Nothing worked...except Body for Life. I am in week 10 of my program and already I have lost 26lbs of fat. This program works for me, and it will for you, too...all you have to do is believe in yourself. This is the best and easiest way to lose weight and get in shape. It's so simple...if I can do it, anyone can. Best of luck and start your Body of Lifestyle...TODAY!
