Rating: Summary: Life changing Review: For the past few years, I knew a change was in order. I needed to exercise more and eat better. I read a lot of information and found myself stuck in the "analysis paralysis". There was too much information out there for me to figure out what was right for me. Then I read this book. It focuses on the fundamentals and holds your hand applying them to your life. I am 10 weeks into the 12-week challenge and my life will never be the same. I am stronger, leaner, more energetic and more confident. Best of all, I have peace of mind, knowing that I will be healthy for the rest of my life. If you are not in the best health you can be (like 99% of us), this book can only help you.
Rating: Summary: Truly inspirational Review: The Body for life program is more than just insightful, it's inspirational. A lot of fitness material is focused so much on complicated lifting, techniques, and point counting that they forget about the main problem. Most people know about working out and eating right, but they lack the motivation and self control to get them to change their bad habits. The introductory chapters deal with helping the reader develop a sense of self-trust and in many respects self esteem. The contest that Phillips recommends you enter is also just the spark that people need to get them over the hump. Money is a great motivator, and even if you complete the challenge and don't win, you still have a great body in the end. In terms of the effectiveness of the material in the book, how can one question the thousands of success stories and remarkable before and after photos included in the book. Whenever someone can make the kinds of leaps in physical and mental fitness that these people have made, they can inspire others to do the same. The book also includes so many powerful passages that give the reader a sense of hope, worth, and pride. The workout plan is right on target. Many people have heard the term "no pain no gain", and this is not always true. I found that many times in the past, I had the problem of not being able to complete my workouts because I was still sore from the week before. After working out using this method for several weeks, I can attest that my workouts were more effective, and I was fresh enough to actually see improvements in strength that had eluded me for a while. There is no doubt about the effectiveness of the Body for Life system, but it might not be practical for many Americans. For one, eating six meals a day can be expensive. Even if you had the money to buy that much food, where would you find the time to cook it? The system may not work for all Americans because it fails to account for the many Americans whose schedules and lives are too hectic for 6 meals a day and 6 workouts a week. This book is excellent for someone who truly wants to improve his or her fitness level, whether or not they win the prize. The workouts and food preparation do take up time, but this book does suggest that people will have more time because of increased energy. Also, a round-the-clock help line is provided to help people deal with any problems they might encounter.
Rating: Summary: great ideas for a new "life" Review: For the most part, I'm very positive about this book. I'm almost in the middle of the program, and have lost about 8lbs and 3.5% body fat (I wasn't really over-weight, just out of shape). I have to agree with the concerns about not recommending stretching. The first day that I followed his program for lower body was the first time I had ever worked my calves, and the following 3 days were TERRIBLE! I had to call in sick to my job because of my muscles, and this may have been prevented with proper warning. About the shakes, it's an option, not a necessity to the program. However, this is not a program for someone who isn't at all motivated. You are never hungry with the suggested method of eating, but I have to admit, I still count down the seconds to cheat day when I can run to McDonalds! Good luck to everyone who has the guts to try this!
Rating: Summary: 12 weeks to better you! Review: The program is simple and easy to follow once you take the time to really study and understand what Bill is saying. Believe me it's worth the effort. The program seems to have the reader in mind. If you have a job and a family, it is impossible to dedicate hours a day to the gym. Bill Phillips' plan tries to get you in and out of the gym in less than an hour, and encourages you to do it faster if you can and the aerobic sessions are only 20min long. The plan is also flexible in the dieting department allowing one day a week where you can eat whatever your heart desires. Above all, the plan works and works very well. Furthermore, it is all natural no pills or gimmicks, nothing but simple straightforward direction and great advice. If you are reading this ...Thank you Bill Phillips.
Rating: Summary: It worked for me! Review: I met a body builder who said he used to weigh 300 pounds (Yes, I saw the pictures)and THIS book helped him lose that weight and it changed his life (Took about three years he said, and this guy is ripped). I blew it off for a while, but finally bought the book... Yes the pictures seem exaggerated, and after 3 months I did not look like a gladiator but it was the first time in my life that I got excercising and eating right down to a succesful art. I'm not a big girl to begin with but instead of soft and squishy I wanted to be firm. I think this book IS realistic but you have to apply it to you. Everyone is an individual and you have to change some aspects of the advice given. For instance, I discovered I'm one of those body types that loses fat quickly and I gain muscle slowly. So doing cardio on a regular basis turns me into a skeleton. Its better for me to keep up the weight training but back off on the cardio. I like the supplements a lot and eating 5 to 6 meals a day. When you are consistant with it the idea of eating anything else becomes disgusting. Even on my free days I looked foreward to a juicy greasy burger, but when I ate it, it didnt provide the same satisfaction it once did when I was not on this life program. Its as if (through practice) fast food and even chocolate became dissapointing. This book has a great and easy work out plan that starts at your level and you progress as you see fit. I think you WILL see/feel a difference as long as you can commit... at no point did I feel hungry or starved during this program, nor did I feel overwhelmed by the work out. This information is not designed in any way to make you suffer to lose weight. It's been almost a year since I started the Body for Life program and I am happy with the results and look foreward to transforming my body even more. There IS detailed information in this book on how to get fit and eat right, but you have to apply it to yourself first. Always get 2nd opinions, I know I did, but this book is an incredible start and the foundation to my personal achievements with my body. I'd also like to add from reading some of these reviews, it sounds as if some people have not read the book but scanned through it. Bill doesnt suggest you work out every day much less he says DON'T do that. You don't have to use Myoplex but from my own research thats one of the biggest brands out there. I have tried other bars but some taste real funky... Find a brand that works for you! I did not see the best results in 2 months but at the end of the third I felt a change. However at the end of 6 months I am convinced this can work... everyones body is different. But thats not an excuse to give up because you dont see results right away. It can be disheartening but if you stick with eating right, purposely increase your weight from time to time, and push the intensity of your cardio theres no way you CANT see results. Its even better that you dont have to kill yourself to get results either. Im the strongest and healthiest I've ever been and I have the faith in myself to become a muscle machine because of this book!
Rating: Summary: It cannot NOT work if you follow it - it makes sense. Review: While the book does mention nutritional supplements, Bill does explain that they are not needed. This program is complete SENSE and it just cannot NOT work for you if you follow it. There is no way possible, unless you have a medical condition, that this advice will not help you get stronger, leaner and more fit. I will update you when my 12 weeks are done, but I can already feel and see the change...
Rating: Summary: If you have will power and discipline... Review: The principles here are very sound and simple. Eat sensibly and hit the gym everyday save for one day a week. The main problem here is a) sticking with the program b) not spending your life savings on Myoplex shakes.
Rating: Summary: hype! Review: This book is purely hype! Any book, video or exercise program with before and aFTER photos and around 20 or so pages of testomoniALS IS HYPE!THIS BOOK PROVIDES VERY LITTLE INFORMATION ON FITNESS AND PROPER DIET. (..., this guy does't even recomend stretching or even warming up prior to intense exercise.)This book is basically a motivatinal primer based solely on false hope i.e lose 25 pounds of fat in 12 weeks (anyone who knows anything about fitness knows that this is far from practical. the real number would be closer to around 3.7 pounds of fat a month.)Bill is also very pushy about the supplements, and states that if you want to achieve an incredible transformation, like some of the ones shown in the book, then you need to take supplements. Now what really angers me about this is that he doesn't say anything remotely similar to, "there are a lot of good brands out there. i dont want to single one out. find one that you like, one that works for you and stick with it." but instead singles out myoplex, a supplement that is made by his own company EAS.After reading through the section on nutrition one gets the feeling that advertising this supplement is what this book is all about. Bill Phillips is a marketing genius. He is one of those people who could "sell ice to an Eskimo". ... CONCLUSION this book does not live up to its hype and certianly won't deliver the results it promises. If you don't believe me prove it- bill doesn't (there is literally no research to support his claims. I searched for a reference section which is suspiciously missing. What you can find in its place, however, is a "useful" appendix of numerous testimonials- the poorest kind of evidence that something really is effective).
