Rating: Summary: Good read even if you never intend to work out. Review: This should be a book everyone reads who even "thinks" about going on a diet. A diet alone affects only your physical size and has some positive affect on the person mentally - but -dieting plus exercise allows the person to experience a win-win-win situation. He/she wins with the weight loss, wins with a stronger body plus, wins mentally. This book is an excellent motivator and if an exercise program (regardless of intensity) is maintained along with proper nutrition for 12 weeks, it should become a life-changing habit in that amount of time.
Rating: Summary: Put one foot in front of the other, soon you're be walking Review: The message in Bill Phillips book is a testament to the efficacy of self improvement if one can instill the self imposed discipline to change habits. Lifting weights three times a week, as Phillips suggests, is concomittant with the neccessary nutritional intake of healthy food. Many people can sustain Phillips's initial workout ethic, to the point of achieving a self imposed weight loss goal, only to slide slowly back to their prior mean after they have reached their self assured potential; that is, of their ability to dedicate themselves to a goal. This is similar to the resolve many have to quit smoking. The key is to sustain the resolve ad infinitum. To this end Phillips offers sound advice.Speaking as one who has worked out with weights religiously over the past thirty years I would appreciate some advice on combating the inexorable weight gain one experiences between 40 and 60 years of age. The saying is you add a pound a year in this time frame. The problem at 60 is injuring yourself with the weights. You don't know you've done it at the time, you only find out a couple of days later when the pain of the injury surfaces. The obvious answer is to workout with lighter weights and eat smaller portions, but the inability to retain the flexibility of aged joints is a barrier to achieving a sufficiently rapid heartbeat. Beyond this the book has all the right information for young and old alike.
Rating: Summary: You'll love this book! Review: I bought BodyforLIFE for my 54 year old, puffy, out of shape husband, because I was worried about his health, but of course, I left the book on a countertop so he would think it was for me! He read the whole book that night, and now, three weeks later, has lost an inch of fat from his 36 inch waist, bought a weight bench and free weights, resumed using our Nordictrak ski machine, entered the book's BodyforLIFE challenge, kept a BFL food and exercise journal, and even resumed a bedroom remodeling project he had put off for months because of his lack of energy. All in three weeks! Now we spend our Sundays cooking BFL recipes so we can stick with the plan all week. Eating by the book (6 small meals every few hours) boosts your energy level throughout your day. You'll be amazed by how often and how much you eat, but you'll also see your excess fat melt off, and your brain and body will not be nearly as tired during and after a work day. This is the way people are supposed to eat! It takes some will power to overcome inertia at first, but Bill Phillips talks about 'crossing the abyss' in the book. At first, you may think the 'before' and 'after' pictures are a joke. My husband did, but now, after only three weeks, he'll point to a picture and say, "You know, I could probably look like that guy in a few months. I never thought so when I started." He's also talking long range again, about his career and retirement goals. In short, BFL can radically change your life for the better. It's changing ours!
Rating: Summary: It works!! Review: This works!! The only thing I didn't agree with is all the sugar substitutes and chemicals that are in the products that you have to use.
Rating: Summary: Inspirational Review: This book really gives you the inspiration you need to start you off. The diet you follow does not make you feel restricted on what to eat. I love it and recommend it. You will lose if you are totally dedicated.
Rating: Summary: overrated unless you are out of shape! Review: Granted, Mr. Phillips knows what he is talking about and knows how to market his products. However, if you are an avid lifter, this book is not for you. I personally have lost about 20% of my lean body mass by implementing his program into my daily schedule. Again, if you want motivation, need basic knowledge, and a good beginning program, this book is for you. However, if you consider yourself to be a hard-gainer with already a pretty good build, you could regress as I did.
Rating: Summary: Just Do It! Review: This book is excellent in its format and the information you get is practical and easy to follow. I didn't care for the testimonals by other people as I was more interested in the diet and exercise part. The chart you get on the nutrition and food guide is easy to follow and you don't have to go to a health food store to get any of it except for a couple of items. There are suggestions for practical foods and explanations on how important it is to eat certain foods with other foods in order for them to break down in our body. This chapter was all new information for me and very informative. The exercise sections are not as difficult as they look and they are designed to attack certain areas of the body that we know are hard to get rid of especially as our metabolism slows down. At first glance you might think you need a gym full of equipment in order to achieve the best results, but there are ways around that so don't let it discourage you. The best part about this book is the idea that you have to be in the right mind set in order to achieve your optimal weight. You will find that this book covers that and a whole lot more. It is a book that fullfills all the needs to have a complete change in the way you think about dieting and getting in shape. And we know that Americans are in great need of this reality check. Look around you, I would say we are getting a little too out of shape, wouldn't you? You will enjoy this book as much as the millions of people out there have as it has sold more copies than any other work out book or diet book. At least read the chapter on diet and food intake. You will find out things you never new before. I know it has worked for me. Not only did I lose weight but my skin looks great and my energy level is up. I have alot a people tell me I look so young for my age and that makes alot of difference in how we eat and exercise. This book is the answer to alot of your questions about diet and exercise. Read it today and then get off the couch and out of that bag of chips!
Rating: Summary: Body for Life Review: This book is outstanding. It helped me change my life! Thanks Bill
Rating: Summary: Total Winner for winners Review: I read this book and am now on the program. I am not that far gone in my shape but I have had 3 children and I am definitely not where I want to be. I am very confident and excited about this program. What I like the best is that Bill has done all of this and then taught it. It is not "theory" projected by someone looking to make money. His web site to support it is comprehensive and valuable offering free downloads and advice. The person who reveiwed this as a one star fluff stuff is obviously lazy, perhaps an underachiever. Critisism is the death gargle of the underachiever. Success principles are universal and not only does this book encompass success principles, it includes "how to", "support" and the "why to do it ( as in why certian things work and certain things don't". To those who understand it, you will flourish in it. The only thing I had to work to get my head around was the intensity index but it's coming. Anything you do takes time to develop into a habit. Bad habits form faster and break slower than good ones. Awesome book with fact in it, NOT fiction.
Rating: Summary: Good book and good program, but... Review: This is a good book, and a good nutrition and exercise program, but in the nutrition department, the author gives a short list of "authorized" foods, but fails to mention what foods are unauthorized. Had there been more guidance on foods to aviod, I might have rated this book 5 stars. Written in a conversational style, so it often feels like the author is talking directly to you, and acting as your personal coach. The exercise program, though it isn't time consuming, is intense, and produces results. In combination with the nutritional program, which is reasonable, it's nearly impossible NOT to start seeing and feeling results within the first 2-3 weeks. Of course, as the title says, this is about your Body for LIFE, so you'll have to keep going after those first few weeks...
