Summary: Some good, mostly bad
Review: The program--like all diet programs--does indeed "work" in the sense that if you follow it you will probably lose some weight and you will get stronger. But the book has major problems:

1. This is not a program that people can stay on. I've known a dozen or so people who went on this diet, but who, because of the restrictive food program (which is nutritionally utter nonesense) and the expensive supplements, couldn't (and in fact shouldn't) stick with this program. Don't be deceived by the testimonials in the book and on the Web; most people don't have similar experiences.

2. The program emphases strength and appearance at the risk of good health.

3. Phillips associates body weight with success in life. Absolutely preposterous. You and I both know dozens, if not hundreds, of obese men and women who are caring parents, successful professionals, honorable civic leaders, faithful volunteers. Phillips seems to demean them all. If you have any sense of dignity and honor, you'll learn to love and appreciate all people, even those who are weight challenged.

4. Phillips promotes the supplement Myoplex, for which he profits. You should ask yourself why someone would promote an expensive, untested supplement rather than promote good nutrition. Before you buy Myoplex, read the label carefully. You'll find that you can get the same nutrition at a much lower cost by eating a balanced dieting and taking some inexpensive vitamin pills.

5. Phillips misquotes information on low-fat, high-carbohydrate diets. His diet is unproven. Low-fat, high-carbohydrate diets have been proven to improve health and decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer.

6. The author's 20-minute, 3-day-per-week cardio program should be considered an absolute bare minimum. In actual fact, research has shown that most people who lose weight and keep it off for a year or more exercise almost daily for 40-60 minutes (mostly walking).
7. The pictures in the book are deceptive on two accounts: (a) they suggest that a typical person can have similar results, which is preposterous, and (b) they show pictures of people who have learned the tricks of making their muscle definition look better than it really is.

So what's good about the book? Phillips has done a great job in educating people about the imporance of strength training as a regular part of their health and fitness program. I think Phillips' weight-lifting (strength-training) program is very good. So, I recommend that you go ahead and get the benefits from the strength training portion of the book, omit the Myplex supplement, and stick with a healthy nutrition program that emphasises a wide variety of foods rather than risk you health on Phillips' diet.

Summary: Don't buy the AUDIO
Review: I've heard the book is wonderful- and of course being the cheater I am, I wanted to listen to the book. The WHOLE first side of the first tape was nothing but testimonials.

The audio book is nothing more than a promo tool.
I got ZERO out of it, and was very disappointed.
I will try to read the book now, I just dont want anyone to waste their time buying the audio book.

Summary: 10 Pounds in 5 weeks
Review: No lie. I have dropped 10 pounds and have started training for a 5K run. I haven't run in years. I followed the very easy plans in this book to eat better and exercise. It has caused an entire life style shift for me and my wife who has lost more weight than I have. We are your average people who like to eat take out, cookies, cake, etc. I wouldn't even go to a gym before I read this book. I didn't know how to fit in with the "regulars", I didn't know what exercises to do or why. The explanations, illustrations and tips in this book have made me a regular at my gym. I'm 30, and I haven't felt or looked this good since college. If you follow the information in this book you won't only lose weight, you will be healthy!

Summary: Complete and utter PROPOGANDA
Review: Because of my profession I read a lot of books like this, and I can tell you that this is by far the WORST book out there. Upon completing this book I was OUTRAGED that any person claiming to want to help people would publish this type of advise. From a nutritionists point of view, this book is incredibly misguided. A person could suffer serious harm sticking to his recommended diet. This book is just a platform for him sell his shakes, powders, etc. It basically is an ...advertisement. He is also very condescending towards women, preying on their insecurities. There is a lot of 'do you want to be a happier and better person by being thin' [stuff] through out the book. STAY AWAY FROM THIS BOOK if you are planning on helping yourself!

There are much better books out there to help a person exercise more and eat properly. My personal favourite is the book by Wini Linguvic on the Body Change program. She offers very sound advise for exercise and nutrition for both men and for women. She is also very motivating and real.

Summary: Time consuming
Review: This book is great for motivation. Having a "free day" is also great. However, the program involves too much time. Preparing six nutritious meals per day and exercising six days per week, is something that could not fit into my schedule long term. I was completely burnt out by the end of the fourth week. I felt restricted by the foods (probably because I am a picky eater)and I found his recipes to be bland and boring. He advocates the use of supplements in the form of shakes and food bars, instead of one or two of the six meals. However, when I went to the website, I thought the supplements were outrageously priced. So I tried the program without them, and found it very difficult to maintain long term.

I have a busy life. I was constantly staying up late to prepare extra meals for the next day and getting up earlier in the morning to fit the exercise into my schedule. This program requires a lot of free time despite what the author says.

Summary: Discipline is the key
Review: Body For Life is a great book. Simple, direct and practical. The insights are incredible and with discipline, everybody can do it. It was one of mine Absolute Victories!

Summary: Good for some, NOT FOR OTHERS (me!)
Review: Don't get me wrong, Mr. Phillips knows his stuff (how to motivate those who do not live a healthy lifestyle, how to write in a way that is easy for the average reader to understand, and how to sell his supplements/magazine), but what if you are all ready in shape? I wanted to incorportate Mr. Phillips' advice and themes into my routine to give it a jumpstart. So I bought this book ... However, after applying BodyforLife into my own life, my physique actually declined! His theory on intensity simply did not increase my muscle or strength.
This is a very educational book. It entails all of the BASIC fundementals of a healthy lifestyle. If you want to get into shape and discover that hidden 6 pack, this book will get you HEADED in the right direction. However, if you are an avid lifter and enjoy a healthy lifestyle, then I'm sorry pal, this book is not for you.

Summary: Great source for common sense fitness and nutrition
Review: The book is easy to read and contains a simple common sense approach to overall fitness and nutrition. The book goes a little over the top on the inspiration side but generally the book is detailed and specific and contains useful information. I tried the 12 week challenge presented in the book and experienced tremendous results and have seen the same happen to others who tried it. I would recommend this book to anyone who feels like they are in a fitness and nutrition rut and need a kick start.

Summary: You don't have to finish in 12 weeks
Review: When I started this program, I was convinced I too could do it in 12 weeks! With 2 boys, a husband, and other obligations, I soon found that maybe it was going to take 12 months. That's ok though! It is called Body for LIFE!! I have been at this lifestyle for 7 months now and I have come about halfway to my goal. Others, usually men, seem to get to their goals faster, but for this stay-at-home mom, I am just glad to have a plan to follow for my exercise and eating. The web site helps a lot too, if you need extra inspiration. This book is well worth its price if you just need something to get you started on your weight loss program.
