Rating: Summary: An unbelievably riveting series. Review: I'm not an avid reader, but I have read 3000 pages of the Claire and Jamie saga in the last thirty days. I have been completely swept away by their lives and loves. The detail with which DG writes transports you to the exact time and place she is describing. I have no desire now but to continue being a part of their lives. I can't wait until the next installment.I have never cried so hard at a book in my life as I did when Jamie and Claire part at the end of DragonFly in Amber. It was heart wrenching. Anyone who needs a good cry need only reread the last twenty pages. Tell everyone you know: this is an amazing series!
Rating: Summary: The best audio tape series I have ever heard Review: Because I commuted to work 2 hours a day in the car, I started to listen to books on tape.. I have heard hundreds of tapes over the past 8 years. This series of tapes are the best around. You can't believe the way the reader brings this story alive. Her accent and the parts she plays as she reads makes you believe there are several people reading, somewhat like a play. You will be fascinated by it, and you will not want it to end. It will leave you wanting to get the whole set, and you won't be sorry...
Rating: Summary: Addiction in the truest sense of the word!!!!!!!!!! Review: I have read all four of Diana's books and I am completely enthralled. I have fallen in love, not necessarily with Jamie and Claire but with the essence of the story. I am a graduate of English Literature and so hestitate to recommend a "romance" but this tale is so vividly portrayed and the reader so expertly held in the palms of Jamie and Claire that I am completely, impossibly, irrevocably in love with it all. It is true what other reviewers have said : you must allow for sleepless nights and unattended children and husbands, until you are finished (well maybe not husbands, the last time I was reading Diana my husband recommended I start the next in the series as it certainly improved our nocturnal activities!) But I feel I must explain a little : I am originally from Australia but now live in rural Scotland and my husband's name is Jamie, so I feel a strong resonance with Claire. It is a strange quality that, although I am nothing like her, she is able to make me feel as she does. This is undoubtably due to the skills of Diana (I hope she is not offended by my being so familiar, yet her writing is so close to my heart). I find the exploits of Jamie and Claire, Murtagh, Fergus, Lallybroch and Brianna resound through my daily activities. It is a joy to be able to drive through the true Scotland and imagine Highland warriors hidden in the glens and seeing the same trees, mountains and coulours of the landscape as Jamie and Claire. With two children under three and a demanding lifestyle I find my most precious moments on the first Wednesday of every month when my Jamie is out, ensconced in front of a good elm fire, with a hearty dram at my side and Jamie and Claire in my hands. BLISS
Rating: Summary: The whole series is one of the best, most romantic I've read Review: I've read all Ms.Gabaldon's books. I get so caught up in them, it's like I become Claire. Does anyone else fell the same? I love the detail, the dialog, the romance, the history and the characters so much. I wait with anticipation for the next installment.
Rating: Summary: Outstanding history, magnetic writing Review: D.G. has woven a story full of magic, adventure, love and personality which is outstanding. I began with the Outlander and am now nearing the end of Drums in Autumn and am delighted to hear there is another coming. The pace is steady through the books .. sometimes almost a little too fast - but from begining to end it never flags. The history is solid. A must read for anyone who enjoys a saga.
Rating: Summary: The most gripping historical/romance novel I've read Review: It may be a great Romance novel... but I like it too! Since most of the reviews I read were from women, I wanted to make sure a man said that he stayed up all night reading it as well! An truelly gripping intertwining of some entertaining charactors with fascinating history. And Jamie may be ok but Claire ain't so bad herself!
Rating: Summary: Romance w/o the ridiculous mush. Exciting. Loved it. Review: This book is 2nd in series of 4 (waiting for #5!). I found it to be the most romantic book I've read. It was not mushy. It was exciting, even entralling at times. Ms. Gabaldon has the ability to place you right inside the book. You feel as if you are there and are a part of all that is happening (and a tremendous amount of "stuff" happens). I'm truly looking forward to the 5th. This book (series) will stay with me forever.
Rating: Summary: A tiny bit of a disappointment Review: I loved the 1st book, was spellbound by the 2nd and couldn't get enough of the 3rd. But I was a bit disappointed in this 4th book. Although I loved the premise, there was just so much going on, and yet not enough of anything. I think it should have been divided into two books, allowing for more details per book. BUT in any case, I can't wait for the next one to come out!
Rating: Summary: Just like eating M&M's! Review: Picking up a single book in this series is like picking up a bag of M&M's. You can't eat just one! After reading 'Outlander', I hungered to know more about Jamie and Claire's life and I am so glad 'Dragonfly in Amber' was there! I loved traveling to France and getting a peek at what life was like at that place in time. I loved meeting Mother Hildegarde, Bouton, and Master Raymond. They are as real to me as Claire and Jamie. And when it was time, I went back to Scotland with the Fraser's with great dread in my heart. They knew what was coming and so did I. The only thing that made it more bearable for me was that there was yet another book to read, 'Voyager'. So I knew that no matter what happened, it wouldn't be the end of either Jamie or Claire! This story could never have been told in one book. Try 'Outlander' first then be prepared to want more. You won't be able to help yourself!
