Rating: Summary: I have issues Review: Why do writers these days feel no sense of responsibility to their readers? "Good in Bed" is sloppy, written by a writer who seems to think that writing a book involves nothing other than letting your imagination run wild and letting the book write itself. No. One must have something to say, one must draw convincing characters and one must have a believeable plot. In the absence of this, one must have a good editor. Our heroine, Cannie, is okay at the beginning of the book, but is thrown hither and tither by the intrepid author into situations of increasing stupidity and improbabability. (Becoming best friends with an actress in a bathroom? Almost losing a baby because of a fight with your ex-boyfriend's new love? Somebody shoot me.) Interestingly, I first read "In Her Shoes" which was my first venture into the chick-lit genre and I thought it wasn't too bad. On the strength of that and the prospect of a long plane ride, I bought "Good in Bed" and skimmed through the last third of the book to find out if what I thought was going to happen actually happened. It did. I have been spoiled by gifted writers (Anne Tyler comes to mind) who have plots that are character driven. After her, books like this are drivel. I don't like being taken for a fourteen dollar ride by an self-indulgent and lazy author.
Rating: Summary: The Best Review: My favorite book, as an avid reader. She makes you instantly ask if this is her own crazy life, because the details and humor are so vividly real. Turns out, alot of it is...and it is a clear joy to read and is never trite or easy to figure out. Will make you laugh out loud and not be able to wait for the next page. I read it to my better half each night for great laughs...we couldn't wait to do so!
Rating: Summary: Get past the title...it's worth it! Review: The book's title is a bit silly, but beyond that the characters are wonderful and the plot moves along. I read this book on the beach and had to take cover under a shaded tree so as not to draw attention to the fact that I was crying in broad daylight. The book is funny and touching. The characters are incredibly endearing. Although some plot developments are far-fetched, keep in mind that this is supposed to be a beach read and not a literary masterpiece. This is not meant as a criticism, I love this genre and Weiner is a master storyteller. I was very sad to see the book end. I can't wait to read Weiner's next novel, In Her Shoes.
Rating: Summary: Entertaining, Funny, Could Relate Review: This was an enjoyable book that I didn't want to end! I would love to read a sequel to this, since the life and trials of the main character, Cannie, were very interesting. The plot becomes unrealistic at parts, but it also adds to its entertaining quality. At other parts, the character is very realistic in describing many womens' experience with body image, as well as the effects of heartbreak and imperfect parents. The wit of the main character is great as well, enabling the sadder elements of her story to be digested and thought about. Great book for girls and guys alike!
Rating: Summary: Definite Read Review: This is the first book by this author that I have read but I will definitly buy her other ones. This was a great book that I just couldn't put down. Finished it in 1 day it was that good. Funny and humourous this book is sure to make you laugh out loud.
Rating: Summary: Great Summer Reading Review: After I caught a friend of mine reading and very much enjoying this book - I ran out and picked it up. All I can say is - it was fun! I really enjoyed the charachter and her thinking in this book. It's an easy read and a great book to bring to the pool or beach with you.
Rating: Summary: one of the best I've ever read! Review: This is one of the best books of this genre that I've ever read, and I've read my fair share! I thought it sounded interesting so I decided to give it a shot. I've read it three times this year and I'm sure I'll read it again. It's addicting, laugh-out-loud funny, and beautiful. It's one of those wonderful books that has you laughing out loud, crying and then laughing again. It's pretty embarrassing to read this book in public as you never know when you might not be able to control your mirth. I recommend this to anyone!
Rating: Summary: Honest, funny and entertaining Review: This book is great for both men and women. For women, to see a character that lives day-to-day with the multitude of societal pressures that we all face, particularly in the area of body image. Yet, the main character is not pathetic, but actually funny and vulnerable, all at the same time. I actually hope they make this into a movie, since it distresses me how "trained" we are in this country that in order to be beautiful, we have to be blond, blue-eyed and size 2-6. It puts beauty, and what it means to be a beautiful woman, in an entirely different light. For men - if you want to understand a little bit of what it feels like to be a woman, especially in the US, this is the book for you. It gets you "inside" a woman's head a bit, particularly in the area of body image and mixed feelings and messages between women and men. I loved it! Some parts made me laugh out loud. Others made me feel great empathy for her. And hey - it has a happy ending!!!
Rating: Summary: Great, fun read -- worth buying! Review: It can be difficult to read books that are as painfully truthful as Jennifer Weiner's first novel. However, "Good In Bed", while painful at times, is also fun and touching. In the book, we meet Cannie (a thouroughly modern woman struggling with life's complexities). Cannie's biggest problem is a BIG problem, she is overweight. The book is Cannie's journey to come to terms with how others see her and more importantly how she sees herself. There are definatley road bumps along the way. Large road bumps along the way. Cannie's ex writes a tell all article for a rival magazine about "loving a larger woman". Any woman will appreciate Cannie's sense of humor as she deals with all of the implications of Bruce's betrayal and as she struggles to make the right choices. In the end, the reader will appreciate the ending as much as they appreciate the path to get there. I purchased this book through Amazon.com right after another great purchase, THE LOSERS' CLUB by Richard Perez, about an unlucky writer addicted to the personals. Both are fun, recommended books. Enjoy!
Rating: Summary: Love-Love-Love It!!! Review: This book is a great read and Cannie is a character almost all women can relate to in some way. I couldn't put this book down when I was reading it and no one I've loaned it to has been able to either. I recommend this hysterical read to everyone I know and haven't gotten a bad review on it yet. Jennifer Weiner tells a story as if you were hearing it told by your best girlfriend. You'll really enjoy this one.
