Rating: Summary: A Well Written Fairy Tale Review: Jennifer Weiner's Good in Bed is a well-written fairy tale, with an engaging, sympathetic protagonist. Imagine you are Cannie, a slightly overweight young woman who has just broken up with her boyfriend of three years. You open up a Glamour-Cosmopolitan type magazine to discover that your ex has a new column, "Good in Bed" and he has chosen to write about "Loving a Larger Woman." That's what happened to Cannie one morning, and it sends her off on a sort of voyage of rediscovery. We follow Cannie as she tries to come to terms with her weight issues, boyfriend issues, family issues and career issues. Her story is entertaining and humorous (not, though, laugh out loud funny like Bridget Jones or Getting Over It). The first half of the novel is grounded in realism and then about halfway through, the fairy tale kicks in. I enjoyed this book, particularly because as a romantic comedy, it wasn't obvious until well into the novel what guy she was going to end up with when it was all over. Jennifer Weiner writes well and has given us a wonderful protagonist in Cannie.
Rating: Summary: You must get your hands on this book! Review: All I can say is this... GET THIS ONE. It is, without a doubt, fantastic. And, no, I am not related to the author. I'm just an enthusiastic woman that can totally identify with this book. This one will go in my personal "fun reading" top ten. If you are a woman that has ever been uncomfortable with her body, do yourself a favor and curl up with this one.
Rating: Summary: A nice reading that make you laugh and cry. Review: I heard the audio version of this book. For me, I think it's a nice reading, keeping my attention through every chapters. There are parts that made me laugh and parts that made me wanna cry. For those who might think this would be another Bridget Jones-type. I would say it's not! The story is not funny from the begining to the end as "Bridget Jones's Diary" or "The Edge of Reason" (which I love both), but it does have some bitter and touchy moments. It would give a different kind of emotion when you read it. The story starts whan Cannie, an overwight magazine reporter, found an article in a women magazine called "Good in Bed" writen by her ex-boyfriend. She was on a "break" from their 3-years relationship at that time, not realizing that her relationship with Bruce is actually over. After trying to attend a wieght-loss program at University of Philadelphia, she found that she is carrying his baby! She still loves Bruce, but he doesn't love her anymore and already seeing someone else. Well.. now you have to figure out by yourself how she will manage her life. Will she keep the baby? Will Bruce comes back to her? Will she finds another Mr.Right? I found this book lovely and touchy.
Rating: Summary: Yay! Review: What a delight. Yes, there are some bitter moments, but the way the book alternates between hard-won insight, humor, anger, and triumph reminds me of the use of dynamics in classical music. Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee, this debut novel has the empathy and charm of Maupin, the insight of Updike, the touch of the absurd from Vonnegut and the passion of, well, Weiner. Nice to have all that in the guise of a beach book. This book is simply a joy, on many levels. Hopefully this will end up as a film, where it could end up as something along the lines of Working Girl (the Melanie Griffith movie) as directed by the Hairspray-era John Waters. I also recommend her tour diary from the ... website. Perhaps the publisher will see fit to include it in the paperback edition.
Rating: Summary: "Good" doesn't begin to describe! Review: "Good In Bed", catchy title, even better story. I read this book in less than 24 hours...it was that good. I felt like I was taking a journey with the lead character, Cannie. Her life is up, down and then even further down but she is strong and will make you laugh out loud at times. This is such an excellent summer read.
Rating: Summary: Hilarious account of one woman's crazy love life Review: There were times when this book made me laugh out loud, which, post-Bridget, is somewhat rare. Though I have to be faithful to Helen Fielding and Bridget, "Good in Bed" is probably the best runner-up that I have read. The plot gets a little far-fetched at times (i.e. becoming best friends with a movie star, selling a screenplay on your first shot, and of course accientally meeting the man of your dreams), but it is still really fun reading. I have to add that probably my favorite part of the book is that after Cannie gets thinner, she decides she likes herself better with some of the weight on, and gains it back! How's that for a revolution in literature?
Rating: Summary: Fantastic Review: I LOVED this book! It was so funny and I'm so pleased to see a story about a "larger woman" who is lovable and likeable.
Rating: Summary: Good in Bed is Good Reading Review: Jennifer Weiner's first book, GOOD IN BED, made me glad I didn't wait for the paperback edition. When Cannie Shapiro tells her boyfriend she thinks they need time apart for a while, little did she know that her ex's chronicling of their sex life would make her name a household name and change her life forever. A woman whose father had turned his back on his family, mother has come out of the closet, Cannie nevertheless has found life not-too-hard-to-take and had even come to terms with life in her non-single-digit dress size. But being publicly humiliated in print by her ex-boyfriend was more than she could bear. She sets off on a series of adventures that range from the sublime to the distressful and sorrowful. Cannie has a great group of supporting character, some human-some not, who add spice and richness to the story. Sometimes funny, sometimes heartbreaking, GOOD IN BED is a story about a women filled with an intense inner strength, who draws upon that strength to get her through some of the darkest moments of her life. I was cheering for Cannie the whole way and she came through like a champ. I'm already looking forward to the author's next book. I do hope I don't have to wait too long.
Rating: Summary: A Must Read Review: I loved Bridget Jones before the hoopla and never thought I would find another character I cared about as much. I now have a replacement for my favorite book of all times in Good in Bed. I began reading this book late one night fell asleep with my eyes stinging and went right back to reading it the next morning. Many of the last chapters were read with tear filled eyes, however. All the characters were written with such intellegence and grace I never wanted them to end. This is one book that will stay with you long after it is over.
Rating: Summary: the feel good book of the year, so far. Review: I have to say that I loved this book. I rarely feel compelled to write reviews about books, and I read quite a bit, so that says a lot right there. It's a must read for anyone that has a poor body image, is a larger woman, or just needs to feel better about themselves. If you want to laugh, cry, and end up with a smile on your face, this is a book for you. If you know anyone with low self image, go out right away and make this book a present to them.
