Summary: Fat gal fairy tale
Review: What started off as a promising, poignant and funny novel falls apart halfway through when Cannie makes her rather implausible Hollywood connection and finds out she's pregnant. Her friendship with starlet-...fairy godmother Maxi is bordering on ridiculous, and her post-partum breakdown is just plain irritating and poorly rendered.

That said, "Good in Bed" was still a decent read; it pulls you in and won't let you go. For all of its minor irritations, I do think the mark of a good story is one that keeps you reading, and this novel delivers on that score. It's also much more likeable than several of the other vacuous novels spawned by Helen Fielding's "Bridget Jones."

Summary: Incredibly well-written
Review: I cannot recommend this book enough. I was intrigued by the description and first chapter sample, so I ordered it. I could have finished this in one sitting if I hadn't been so busy this past week. Jennifer Weiner is an excellent writer. She has created a character, Cannie Shapiro, of such warmth, human foible, and believability, I felt as if I really knew her. Very few writers have the talent to create such interesting and heartfelt characters. Jennifer Weiner definitely has that talent.

I related completely to Cannie Shapiro. We are the same size, and although she is Jewish and ten years younger than I am, I still knew what she had gone through, I had been there. Her feelings are universal. The story is realistic, and always has that glimmer of hope about the old boyfriend, Bruce. We don't realize until the end of the novel that he really is not a nice person. Cannie's mother and lesbian life partner are hysterical. Dr. K. is an absolute gem. Cannie's sense of humor and pathos are both hysterical and touching. At one moment, I would be laughing, the next moment, my tears would not stop flowing. I had to put the book down after chapter 16, I was feeling so emotional.

Read this book. It is over 300 pages long and I didn't want it to end. Although the friendship with the Minnie Driver-esque actress and the trip to Hollywood may be a bit fanciful, the rest of the novel is pure gold. When I reached the end, I felt in limbo, and I wanted more! Oh please say there is a sequel in the works! I seldom get this worked up about a novel, but this one definitely has me in its clutches!

Summary: WONDERFUL!!!
Review: This is the first Jennifer Weiner book I've read, but I will definitely read more of hers! Cannie is a wonderful "true" woman with qualities and life time experiences we can all relate to. This is a romance novel that could be a true life scenario. A bit of a tear jerker with a VERY satisfying end. ENJOY!

Summary: Woe is Me... I heard the abridged version.
Review: And I think I missed out on some good writing. Or at least I hope I did. It's against my religion (!) to listen to abridged works, but this one was mislabeled so I didn't realize until the end that I'd been robbed. I would have liked more of Cannie's sharp narrative, because I really liked _her_. And maybe the woefully underdeveloped male characters weren't so underdeveloped; maybe they were just cut for time. Too bad. Never settle for an abridged work because you think you don't have enough time. A good book will stay with you and it's worth every word!

Summary: A great beach read--but also a really good book
Review: When I bought this book, I had fairly low expectations. I assumed it would be a lightweight beach book--and hey, nothing wrong with that! But, to my surprise, it's well-written, unique, and well worth purchasing in hardcover. It may look fluffy on the outside, but Jennifer Weiner has some interesting and thought-provoking things to say. How pleasant to come across a writer who actually deserves the hype she's getting! I'm definitely be looking forward to reading her next book.

Summary: Entertaining.
Review: I chose this book because of a review I read in my local newspaper, the author grew up in a town near my own, so it sparked my interest. After reading the spotlight on Jennifer Weiner in my newspaper, it was difficult not to compare her main character, Cannie, to her. I had some difficulty getting into the book, but midway through, I couldn't put it down. Cannie became almost like a friend- she reminded me of some of my own friends! Overall, I liked "Good In Bed"-it is a good travel companion/beach book.

Summary: Laugh out loud AND shed a tear - doesn't get better...
Review: What a mature, complete novel - but still a great vacation read. It's seldom you get the best of both worlds. I enjoyed meeting the characters, particularly since even the minor players were well-developed. This is a really engaging story about someone who has self-esteem issues that are "relatable" told with remarkable wit (if you like sarcasm, this book is for you!!). Even the outlandish stuff seemed plausible, and I just kept feeling happy when good things happened to the protagonist. I'm looking forward to future novels from this writer; she really did make me laugh out loud (my husband kept asking, "What's so funny?"). Want to set a book down and say, "Ahh, that was good"? Then this book is for you.

Summary: fun to read book
Review: OK, I wouldn't say this is something I've never read before. But then again, I knew this when I went & bought "Good in bed" (catchy title, by the way!) so there's no reason to complain. So was "Good in bed" original? Not really. Was it good? Yes, I think so. That's where I was pleasantly surprised...

Jennifer Weiner is a journalist for the Philadelphia Inquirer. Actually, she's a columnist, holding a space in the Sunday paper for the last couple of years, writing mainly about books & writers, but just about anything else, too. Her writing style is very good--funny, to-the-point, meaningful. Now she's written a book that manages to transcend the "single girl feels lonely, has dozens of problems, is overweight & depressed but still manages to meet Mr. Right" genre...How does she do this? How is this book original when the plotline is nothing but? Well, it's simple. As for all kinds of books, this kind of book begins & ends with the author's talent & ability to write.

The actual story of "Good in bed" is sometimes over the top, I admit. Sometimes the coincidences in Cannie's life are too strange to swallow. Some other times her life seems a little like a soap opera, while others it just seems like she's making trouble for herself. But still, while I was reading this novel, none of these thoughts came to me, nothing really struck me as unreal or phony: I was merely having lots of fun.

Sorry about not writing anything about the actual plot! You've probably guessed most of it, anyway. And you're most probably right! Girl meets boy. Girl loses boy. Girl finds other boy. Do they live happily ever after? Does she manage to lose the weight she's been struggling with? Does her disfunctional family shape up? Well, it's all for you to find out. And in the meantime, have fun while reading this.

Summary: Great on the sofa too!!
Review: How refreshing it was to read a book that had me laughing from beginning to end! I couldn't help but cheer Cannie on during each chapter..hoping that she'd come out swinging more as each page went by. (She did!) Ms. Weiner's debut book is one to definitely pass on to other friends to read..it was a well written book, with surprises along the way! I am looking forward to Ms. Weiner's second novel wholeheartedly!!

Summary: Good to read
Review: Imagine finding the story of your last relationship written in print in a national magazine and it begins with "Loving a Larger Woman". Any overweight woman already has her insecurities and doesn't need the nation to read about how her ex, a writer for the national male magazine, Moxie, feels she was lacking in the bedroom.

Here we meet Cannie Shapiro, writer for the Philadelphia Examiner. She begins the long trek to come to terms with herself, her ex, and her highly mixed up family. There are a few surprises in her future.

A very funny novel. Sometimes I really felt her pain, (being a larger women, also from a dysfunctional family). An excellent read for any woman of any size.
