Rating: Summary: Good in Bed Review: "Good in Bed" sounds like something everyone wants and wants to be. Too bad you will be disappointed with this book. It starts out well enough. But somewhere in the middle of the whining about her weight and inability to cope with her family, I just lost interest. I did make myself finish the book. I am always hopeful that things will improve. I feel things in this book went from bad to worst. Maybe it's the self-defeating attitude "feel sorry for me I'm fat". Or the way no one in her office doesn't the fantastic job she does and yet she is given little credit. I just thought it was more like self-loathing instead of pulling herself up by the boot straps and making a better life. Instead she is unrealistically suspended until her fantasy friend appears to make her life better. I noticed how her fantasy man appears interested in her after she loses weight. This book is a romantic novel in disguise
Rating: Summary: Disappointed Review: Cannie starts out as an interesting character. The ex-girlfriend who is now public fodder for her ex-boyfriend's magazine column. The story could have been about Cannie's examination of her own issues, as well as the ex's. Instead, she's the selfish harpy brat. Ex-boyfriend's dad dies? Use the funeral to try and get back together with him by doing the deed with him that day! Of course, she gets knocked up. So she (subtly) tries to use the pregnancy to try and lure him back to her!Meanwhile, she steps all over her family and friends, and ignores the kindness and obvious interest of a terrific guy. She gets the Cinderella treatment from her Fairy Movie Star, takes away her ex's column, and whines all the way to the bank. Of course, Dr. Charming sticks around despite her being a grating, clueless, selfish jerk, and wins her "heart". Cannie a plus-size heroine? No, just a big fat brat.
Rating: Summary: A Great Summer Read Review: I heard rave reviews for this book and I am so glad that I picked it up. It is a wonderfully funny book. I loved the lead character Cannie Shapiro, she has an amazing sense of humour and it is a good thing that she does considering her ex-boyfriend, Bruce, is writing about their sex life in a national publication! Cannie is an overweight woman struggling with her looks, her career and the men in her life. Her father was a horrible person, he emotionally abused her and then disappeared from her family's life. That betrayal follows her, her sister, brother and mother for the rest of their lives. Cannie does however find the peace that she is looking for. She comes to terms with her family, her weight and opens her heart to find the love and acceptance she has always craved. An excellent book, I couldn't put it down.
Rating: Summary: not as good as I had hoped Review: This book started out well, but lost its steam. I was disappointed by the slowness of the book and kept waiting for it to get better.
Rating: Summary: Good in Bed-Screens of my Life Review: "Good in Bed" changed my life or should I say the way I look at my life. While reading this book there were so many times when my heart stuck in my throat. Not because Cannie the main character's father was a jerk, not because Cannie was constantly rude to her mother, or not even because Cannie slept with her ex-boyfriend out of pity. My heart stuck in my throat because it seemed as if Jennifer Weiner had been reading my journal and understood the struggle I sometimes feel as a successful young woman who doesn't fit the typical mold of society when it comes to what the world deems as beautiful. I am a twenty five year old larger successful business woman and for the first time in my life I read a book where there was a happy ending for me. For the first time I read a book where dreams do come true for the person that's not 130 lbs. Most importantly Cannie the main character was loved and appreciated all along by those that really cared for her. Even her screwed up ex-boyfriend understood the intricate societal pressures placed upon larger women. Its about time someone wrote a book through the eyes of women like me! I applaud Jennifer Weiner and I eagerly await her next masterpiece!!!
Rating: Summary: My Life Review: I could not put this book down. I read it like I had nothing else to do for two days. I just kept thinking that Ms. Weiner had somehow crawled into my head and found her inspiration. Except for the pregancy, I could be Cannie. Her characters all had so much depth and dimension. I was sorry to see this book end.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful book to curl up with Review: I picked up this book while on vacation from teaching. I wanted something to read other than student work. :) I began reading and after several pages I just couldn't put the book down. I have been reading this book at every opportunity because I want to find out what will happen next. I am now thankgul that I picked up this book as a "vacation read." I would recommend this book for anyone that has enjoys reading about women overcoming life obstacles.
Rating: Summary: A MUST READ! Review: Excellent story line, every single woman will understand where this story comes from.
Rating: Summary: LOOK! A REAL, MODERN, SINGLE WOMAN... Review: and the story of some outrageous things that happen to her. Many reviewers have faulted Good in Bed's plot twists for being "unbelievable," but I don't think the author intended for the book to be completely grounded by reality. After all, where would the fun be in THAT? Rather, I think that in her first novel Jennifer Weiner has succeeded in creating a smart, single, introspective, imperfect, troubled, hopeful, modern woman and woven a tale where fascinating things happen in her life. The heart of the story comes from how Cannie deals with each event. I won't give too much away, but the saga starts with Cannie's ex-boyfriend writing columns about her in a woman's magazine, the first one being called "Loving A Larger Woman." Ouch. Later, Cannie is befriended [more like adopted] by a female movie star, sells a screenplay, and spends a luxurious all-expenses-paid month in L.A., topped off by meeting the man of her celluloid dreams [but don't jump to any conclusions]. This may all be far-fetched in the real world, but in fiction it makes a tremendously entertaining story. Other characters in the book, like her Mom's wacky lesbian partner, were as multi-dimensional and interesting as Cannie. It was fun to find out what they would do or say next. I also liked that the book was not perfunctorily set in London or New York. Cannie's Philadelphia, as well upscale L.A. seen through her "outsider's" eyes, were delightful to visit. Also satisfying are Cannie's deliciously devilish comebacks to several rude characters. Those few scenes are 100% therapeutic fun! : ) Don't want to reveal any more, but I strongly urge you to discover this great book for yourself.
Rating: Summary: A Book I wish did not end Review: I have read some of the other reviews that bashed this, but I cannot agree. I thought this was written well and was a good read. One person doubted that a kindergarden teacher would stay with a man who abandoned his pregnant ex... i have seen stranger things!! I also found it hard to believe that she was befreinded by a movie star, but this is a book!! and that is called suspension of disbelief!! All in all a good read I wish had not ended!!
