Summary: NEXT!!!!!!!
Review: Wow,the lesson I learned from purchasing and reading this book is- never assume that the New York Times bestsellers list is an accurate measure for a good read!

Hyped as a great summer read, I looked forward to enjoying this book, however, instead of finding a story which could substantiate the media review raves, I read a girl meets boy-boy meets another girl-girl finds someone who really loves her predictable story, laced with cynical, self-abasing, slapstick humor. The continuous onslaught of big girl jokes made it hard to hang in there for the "now I love myself just the way I am" fairytale ending.

Summary: great message if a little unrealistic at times
Review: If you have ever had someone tell you in order to lose weight you needed to burn more calories than you ate, and in response you wanted to punch them, then you'll love this book.

Summary: not so good
Review: I was told this would be a great book. "Its just like Jane Green's books". not really. i found this book boring. i didnt even finish it. i suppose it gets better as you go on but I cant gain any interest in it to continue. The Dominant Blonde is much better. read that.

Summary: Good Start..for the author's first published book
Review: Although I normally just read the reviews and don't write them, I have to put in my 2 cents for this book. It's not the autobiography of Gandhi, but I guess I usually like my books a little more serious. It sounds like a bad review so far, so this is why I don't do them. Anyway, trust me, I was half way through the book when I decided to pick up the phone and call my mother to tell her that she had to read the book as soon as I was done with it. No matter what your sex or size, you can't help but identify with the heroine and cheer her on. The best character strength is that she doesn't know how strong she is, but she remains true to herself. Would definitely recommend it to anyone.

Summary: A light, fun read.
Review: Well-paced story line and light, amusing writing style make this a fun summer read. Any reader who is a "larger woman" will definitely laugh at the heroine's tart, witty remarks about body image. (I know I did!) Thoroughly enjoyable.

Summary: Somewhere in the middle between good and bad
Review: I started our loving this book b/c Cannie calls Philadelphia home much like myself and the author writes the book so that I can picture exactly where Cannie is walking, eating, etc. The beginning of the book was also good b/c Cannie's adventures were very believable and made me want to keep flipping. Then I hit the middle of the book, and I still kept flipping b/c I was waiting for it to reach the good part again. Except I ran out of pages to flip and was left feeling unfulfilled by the last half of the book. Being a somewhat full figured woman(a size 16 myself, so I took offense on the fact that this size was considered extremely obese when I myself am quite in shape), I found Cannie's low self-esteem and slide into self-pity to be quite annoying. I kept wanting to yell at her to get herself together and realize how much she had going for her. I was disappointed that a character that started out strong, ended up being a whiny, annoying girl.

Summary: Refreshing Change in the Romance Genre...
Review: I am a huge fan of romance, all categories, but lately I am finding myself bored on more than one occasion with the books out there. When I picked this one up, being told it was a 'chick lit' book and also being a huge fan of that genre too, I was greatly surprised and thrilled to be reading about an average woman who is 28 and not a size 6!
I have nothing against being a 6, but face it, not many of us are and this character, Cannie Shapiro is a size 16. She has always been a little bothered by what society says about plus size women, but hasn't let it get to her too much until her long time boyfriend Bruce of three years decides to seek revenge for their recent break-up by writing an article called 'Good in Bed'in a popular women's magazine called 'Moxie'.
The article relayed events and his thoughts about 'fat women' and how he tried to love Ms. 'C', but couldn't because she didn't love herself enough. Becoming furious, Cannie knew who 'C' was and went to confront him. Having nothing to say, Bruce simply says, 'face it, you're fat Cannie'. Now Cannie has purpose. She will destroy Bruce!
Hilarious at times and touching at others, this story is a realistic look into the life of a single twenty-something facing problems and how she goes from joining a weight clinic to reading yet more articles from her ex, to trying to prove to him how she is beautiful, dealing with her fifty-something mother who has decided to come out of the closet, her absent father, her wacky dog Nifkin and then realizing she needs to like herself for who she is.
I was happy at the end when Cannie decided she didn't need to be what society wanted her to be and was happy in her own skin. A refreshing change in the romance genre, Cannie Shapiro is a real life character and I hope many other authors take Ms. Weiner's lead...
I loved it and am excited to buy her new one coming out next spring, 2003, called "In Her Shoes". Kudos to Jennifer Weiner on her first book!

Summary: Weak entry in a strong genre
Review: There are so many wonderful books out there about confused 30ish urban women. This isn't one of them. It seems as if the author couldn't decide whether she wanted to be of the fun-and-clever Helen Fielding ("Bridget Jones") or more somber-and-literary Alice Hoffman ("The River King") ilk. She missed in both directions.

If you're looking for light and love-oriented, try Jane Green's "Jemima J" or Jenny Colgan's "Amanda's Wedding". For a deeper read, try Barbara Kingsolver or Melissa Bank or Anita Shreve. Nick Hornby, Marian Keyes, Robert Hellenga, Alison Lurie...

This one might be Good in Theory. In reality, it's just mediocre.

Summary: Best Read In Ages
Review: There's something in this book for every woman. Cannie is more than human, she's witty, smart, and goes from highs in her life to serious lows...all while touching every part of you from funny bone to tears. This really helps you see that you are worthwhile, even if you only see your bad points.

An EXCELLENT read.
