Rating: Summary: Cry me a river... Review: All the "heroine" does in this book is whine whine whine... Boohoo, I'm fat...Boohoo, my boyfriend dumped me...my dad abandoned me...my mom is a lesbian...my sister is skinny... So what???!!! Get over it lady. This story is painfully ridiculous. This sniveling woman actually becomes best friends with a movie star who spends piles of money on her and lavishes her with gifts and attention...yeah right. In fact, everyone she knows lavishes her with attention and does she appreciate it? Hardly. And the ending to this tale is just flat out absurd and corny. I'll admit I skipped a lot of parts because it was SO unbearable. But I read enough to know that Cannie (even this name is so contrived) is a total wimp. I'm writing this review simply as an advisory. Read Laura Zigman or Helen Fielding--at least their heroines are funny.
Rating: Summary: Not Light Reading! Review: My friend recommended this book as a hilarious one that I would love. I read the first few pages (up through the tequila & frozen lemonade) and indeed, it was hilarious. but I found myself glued to the pages as the story progressed, and I found it to be an emotional roller coaster, and I wasn't expecting that at all. it has so many issues that many women today are so intimately familiar with... With Cannie, I faced Fat issues, Breakup issues, Post-Breakup issues, Success issues, Home Problem issues, yadda yadda, all through this book... I found it pleasing that that the author was able to deal with all those issues and still write a funny and witty book! Cannie was a good character - I quite liked her, and I definitely empathized with her. I recommend this to any woman who's got a handle on her issues - you'll be faced with a lot of familiar things in this story.
Rating: Summary: Such a very very good summer read Review: This book is the best I have read this summer, bar none. I willingly admit I bought it because the cover attracted my eye but I was immediately taken in by the very first chapter. This book is completely original and constantly entertaining. It is hilarious and sarcastic one minute and incredibly poinent and raw the next. The reader is instantly drawn to the main character and her situataion, she is funny and sharp and loving and endearing all at the same time. This novel has every element that makes a good read, I laughed outloud and I cried, can't get much better than that.
Rating: Summary: Fine summer reading Review: First off let me say that I enjoyed "Good in Bed"; no it's not high art, yes some of the situations are highly improbable and too predictable but so what. It's still a fun read, that had me laughing out loud and genuinely touched, especially when Cannie shared her pain about her father. It's hard not to like Cannie, she's witty, smart and has some great one-liners. Yes she's struggling with her weight, but don't all North American women, fat, thin or average struggle with some body image issues at some time? There is plenty to relate to here, in our quest to be "body perfect". I liked this book and I liked Cannie, what more needs to be said!
Rating: Summary: She just isn't funny . . . Review: This book was highly recommended, but I found it embarrassingly shallow and annoying, with language way too simplistic. The main character is egotistical and thinks she is brilliant and funny. Friends lavish undeserved gifts on her--she does nothing for anyone but herself. Plus she never reacts much to the attention, except to note how cool it is to get all these gifts. She spends most of her time playing victim to her weight, her ex, and her dad. I kept waiting for her to have some interesting and real conversations with people, but it didn't happen. And realistic? I don't think so--a movie star becomes her best friend--please! The last 70 pages show a more interesting side of her, but overall, a big disappointment.
Rating: Summary: I Laughed, I Cried ... Review: How can you not like Cannie? Anyone who mixes frozen lemonade and tequila and drinks it right out of the bowl, and who has a dog named Nifkin (you'll have to read the book to find out what that means) can't be all that bad. Cannie is a very accessible heroine in that she faces struggles that all young women do: weight, career, relationships, family, etc. Most of us don't end up running into movie stars, but even that part of the book held an important lesson.I didn't think this book was particularly deep or profound. But it had some good things to say about body-image issues, relationships, and growing up, regardless of how old you are. The dialogue is great & Cannie's wit and sense of humor are wicked. There were parts of the story that I didn't see coming, and I did spend the last part in tears. I'd definitely recommend this as a QUICK and fun summer book.
Rating: Summary: a must for any plus size woman... Review: or any woman who is insecure about her body for that matter. I liked the fact that the novel doesn't just say that Candice is savvy, but it shows it through using her unique voice. I could relate to it, in that it reflected some of the insecurities that I also have as a plus-sized woman. But I think that this novel is about women learning to truly accept themselves instead of pretending to accept themselves.
Rating: Summary: An impressive debut from a talented new author Review: I enjoyed this novel quite a lot. Cannie, the protagonist, is a fairly depressive, wildly witty journalist with a weight problem and a broken heart. Her story was compelling in a lot of ways; from her friendships to her lesbian mother to her ultimate decision to move on from a bad relationship. Parts of the book went on a little long, and the final fourth was starkly bleak in contrast with the rest of the story---though of course it ended well, and with all sorts of lessons learned. I liked this a lot. I'm looking forward to Weiner's next novel.
Rating: Summary: Weiner writes from the heart Review: Upon recommendation from the book club that has formed where I work, I took home Good in Bed. I cracked it open at 7 PM and aside from a break for dinner and the bathroom, I didn't put it down until 4 :30 AM when I finished. At points it is hard to read... at times I felt almost a revultion to the things being said and the topics being dwelt upon. However, I do share some traits with our leading lady (I'm a large woman, hungry for acceptance, bitter when things don't turn out the way I want) and I realized often my discomfort was because of how close to the mark much of what she wrote about was. She's either crazy, or has felt that same pain, fear and frustration. The book is predictible in some ways, but I also found it courageous and uplifting. A big part of that, for me, was identifying with a habit, and seeing how I might benefit from letting to of that habit (holding onto hate and never asking for help). I imagine people will either love or hate this book, but it's certainly worth a try.
Rating: Summary: Not all that great. Review: Not a bad beach book. Very predictable, humorous, but tried a little too hard to be funny. It became a little bit long for such a typical story.
