Rating: Summary: LOVED IT... Review: It's a very easy read, and I mean no disrespect to the author in saying this, it's just not the kind of novel you'll ever have to flip back a few pages to cross-reference something. I loved it. The author clearly loves her characters, and each, though somewhat implausible, is beautifully crafted. The story line, I know one reader described it as "fairytale like", which it is, is emotionally rich. I loved everything about this book and would highly recommend it.
Rating: Summary: A MUST READ! Review: Once I picked this book up it was impossible for me to put it down. "Good in Bed" is the best written novel that I have read. Cannie's wit and determination bring her through many of lifes unexepected twists and turns. Jennifer Weiner has now become my favorite author. I am eagerly anticipating her next novel!!
Rating: Summary: Great read, great message Review: After reading other reviews, I think that you have to be a "larger woman" to truly love this book. I think that's why some people thought it was too fluffy. But you have to get past the fluff (and the character's seemingly impossible string of good luck) and get to the message. A message you may not understand unless you've felt what Cannie felt, where your biggest flaw, or so you think, is your size, no matter how great you are as a person. Here's my thought: If you're a size 16 and have spent a good portion of your life wishing you weren't, this is the book for you. I spent most of the book with tears in my eyes and my mouth gaping open because I felt like the author had walked into my head, read my mind, and written a book about me. I never realized that other people felt and thought the same things I always have. When the author nails every emotion that you've had about eating, skinny co-workers, how it feels to be naked, etc., you laugh, you cry, and you nod in appreciation that you are not alone. When I wasn't in awe that this woman was reading my mind, I was taking it as advice and making sure I got the message. The second half of the book I read in one sitting, staying up until 3 a.m. and bawling uncontrollably during the last 20 pages. Not because of what the other reviewers call the "fluffy" stuff or even the plot itself or the outcomes of the lives of the main characters. But more because I learned something about myself. I recognized myself in the character, and I recognized how I could learn from her. Who needs self-help books? I will read and re-read this book, mark the pages, and remind myself that life is good and, no matter what I and others may think, I am good, too. Call it fluff. I call it a great read.
Rating: Summary: Down-to-Earth, Fun Read! Review: I was really surprised by this book. Excellent character development, real-life storyline - I couldn't put it down! Definitely recommended.
Rating: Summary: Good in Bed and on the couch and on the commute and... Review: What can I say about a book that even on the second reading has me up until 1am sobbing hysterically and the next day laughing out loud on a boat full of people on the commute in and back from work. Excellent, honest, poignant, funny and true. The best thing about the book is the growth in Cannie's attitude about herself, that weight is an issue but it's not the ONLY issue. There are truly more important things in life. I especially recommend this book to those of us who are learning that it's more important to get through life with our heads up than with our weight down.
Rating: Summary: Read Jemima Jones instead Review: ...if you're in the market for a plus-size fairy tale. My friends and I all loved it. It isn't literature, but it's better than this.
Rating: Summary: IT IS GREAT Review: This is a great book that I read fully in 3 days. It is a light book that you can enjoy without having to carry the world on your shoulders. Its great fun, very easy to read, and wonderful. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to read a great book just for the sake of reading a great book. You will pass it around your girlfriends when you are done - I Promise.
Rating: Summary: Don't Judge a Book by Its Cover (OR Title) Review: Good In Bed has a sexy title, a great cover photograph, and enthusiastic blurbs on the back about how witty its heroine is. Just don't actually buy & read this stinker. Cannie Shapiro, the self-involved, BORING, UNFUNNY, and UNSEXY protagonist of "Good in Bed", decides that she wants her goobie boyfriend (named Bruce Guberman--GET IT?) back when he writes a humiliating expose about how fat Cannie is in a national women's magazine. She loves him, she misses him, SHE's CARRYING HIS BABY! But that's not enough--Cannie implausibly becomes best friends with a movie star who decides she's just GOT to star in Cannie's screenplay, Cannie immediately gets rich, & everyone sits around & tells Cannie how witty & ambitious & wonderful she is for a couple hundred pages while she feels sorry for herself & neither she nor the author displays any interest whatsoever in anyone but Cannie. Blah blah blah happy ending when pining Fat Farm Doctor blurts his love for Cannie just like she is. Ok, so you're thinking that maybe it's one of those dumb but sexy books--don't fool yourself. The references to sex serve no apparent purpose but to brag about Cannie's technical superior experience & prowess in the sack. Both Cannie & her creator might benefit from remembering that whether you're a lover or a writer, you're no good unless you're providing pleasure to someone else.
Rating: Summary: EXCELLENT READ Review: I had mixed feelings about buying this book, however I am glad I did. I could not put this book down. I ignored my family for 2 days so I could read it. It has a mix of everyhing, romance, comedy and a serious side too. Anyone who has a doubt don't. In fact I cannot wait until "In Her Shoes" comes out. Jennifer Weiner is going to be one of the best and I hope she keeps writing. I am a "hard" critic and usually don't give books a 5 star but this one there was no doubt!
Rating: Summary: An enjoyable fluffy read Review: I did like this book. I enjoyed an unconventional main character (an overweight sarcastic women), who had a grip on life and reality. She was flawed, but aren't we all. The hardest stretch as a reader was reconciling that an everyday person could run into a celebrity in the bathroom, bond over love lost and magically have them become your fairy godmother, whisking you away to places you never would have normally gone, and how her life is altered by this person who can flit in and rearrange apartments with the touch of her money. With that aside I liked this book. It was a plot that I, and possibly many can relate to, getting back to life after a breakup. In addition Jennifer Weiner brings to the foreground a weighty issue, that of obesity. The fact that her main character is not a size 0 who eats celery all day long, but was real and human and stayed up late crying in her ice cream and worried about the sounds her pants made when she walked, made me want to meet this person, have coffee with her and get to know her. I encourage you to read this book. It is a perfect book to sit at the beach with, or better yet snuggle up on the couch with a blanket and a cup of cocoa and just have fun.
