Rating: Summary: started good and went downhill... Review: I bought this book for a long plane ride, and I will say it was an easy read. But I was really disappointed because it started out funny and interesting and raised serious issues, and then quickly became stupid and boring. I first got annoyed when Cannie goes on and on whining about Bruce for what seems like forever (very unsympathetic because she not only takes advantage of him, but stalks him as well), then I got really annoyed when the book turned into one of those "getting pregnant will fix everything that's wrong in your life and make you see how meaningless everything else is" type of stories. But I might have been okay with all of that if the story had continued to focus on interesting emotional issues instead of degenerating into this shallow fantasy about a movie star who is perfect in every way and wants to be Cannie's best friend. Ugh. And the romantic story was completely flat. I thought Bruce was the only remotely three-dimensional character in the book.
Rating: Summary: My (new) favorite book! Review: I absolutely loved this book! The story line was constantly intriguing, with a main character that comes to life like no other. She is so believable that it's hard not to get sucked into this story. :)
Rating: Summary: Great beach read Review: I truly loved this book and how it approached dating and self image. If you are looking for a heavy book, this is not it. I read it 3 days but that was mostly because the writing was concise and witty and I couldn't wait to see what would happen to Cannie next. I will definitely look for books by this author again.
Rating: Summary: She Nails It Review: Jennifer Wiener absolutely nails what it feels like to be a larger-than-normal-sized woman in today's world. This book gives the reader a positive, hilarious, candid and poignant look at the world through the eyes of a woman who feels as if she is not quite as accepted in society as others are. While reading this book, I laughed aloud. I could not contain my audible comments, saying "Yes" or "You got It" more times than I could count, much to the surprise of those around me at that moment. I devoured this book in 2 days, and yes, I read fast, however I could literally not put this book down. Quite honestly, this is possibly the best book I have ever read. As soon as I am done with this review, I am purchasing her next novel, even though it is still in hardcover. I cannot wait for the softcover to be released. Thank you, Jennifer, for this novel.
Rating: Summary: A truly witty and spunky book Review: My best friend told me to read this book and I told her I couldn't be seen on the beach with that book. Well, curiosity got the best of me and I went out and bought it!! It is the most refreshing book I've read in a long time. I was laughing and crying the whole time.
Rating: Summary: There IS hope 4 the Underdog! Review: I absolutely loved this book! I intially purchased it based on some reviews, wasn't sure if I'd enjoy, surprisingly enough I did. There were many times where I related to the characters. Weiner did a great job at making the characters jump out at you (even if you don't really like them, you still understand them & can relate them to people in your life). I totally recommend this book, it's an easy read, and very enjoyable!
Rating: Summary: Good in Bed is a Great Read Review: I couldn't put this book down. Jennifer Weiner has created a deeply funny and truly poignant book about a single woman who happens to be 1) a celebrity reporter for a not-so-important newspaper 2) wearing plus-sizes and 3) recently heartbroken. As the book opens, she finds herself the subject of her ex-boyfriend's magazine column about Loving a Larger Woman. In it, he notes she was "good in bed," thus the title of the book.In spite of the main character being good in bed, this book doesn't have any hot sexy love scenes. If you're looking for those, buy a book in the romance section. And if you want more "serious fiction," don't buy this book. Then again, the title might put you off anyway. I mean, does "Good in Bed" sound like a pretentious overly prettily written book about something really depressing? But if you want to read a story that is vivid, compelling, enjoyable and gasp! even meaningful, this is the book for you ... no matter how much you weigh or how good in bed you are. BTW, since I read this book, so have several of my friends (all different shapes and sizes, some single, some not, these friends). My friends universally love this book, though they all have different "favorite" parts. So consider this review as not the voice of one, but the voice of 10 women. This is a Great Read!
Rating: Summary: bucsgal Review: This is a fantastic book. I loved every minute of it. Cannie is a truly original and very funny character. I definately would recommed this book, I have already ordered In Her Shoes!! I can't wait to get it.
Rating: Summary: WHAT A GREAT BOOK! Review: WOW! What a great story--and how well written. I started this book on a business trip on the plane and sat up until 1:00AM reading it--finished it on the plane back and my only disappointment was that it was over! I really enjoy Jennifer's writing style and wonderful sense of humor. In addition, it was a very human book, feelings were real and if you have ever struggled as a woman with your weight--you will laugh and cry with Cannie. Now, I am going off to search the site for more Jennifer Wiener books..........
Rating: Summary: The *kayters* review Review: Cannie Shapiro's boyfriend has done the unthinkable. He's written about her in a national women's magazine, Moxie and what's worse, he referred to her as "a larger woman" and called her "Lewinsky-esque". Cannie knows she's not petite, but she really didn't care to see it in print. And what's worse, when he wrote the article, she thought they were "taking a break", not "broken up". (I thought about Ross and Rachel when I heard this part!) Needless to say, they do break up after the fact, but unfortunately, Cannie comes to realize that Bruce (her ex) really understood her after all and she begins to wish they had not broken up. I can't reveal more or I will be giving away information that will spoil the plot, but suffice it to say that this is not a typical chick-lit novel. Some much deeper themes are dealt with here and the romance is not the core of the novel. You will sympathize with Cannie and cheer for her and you will also wish she'd quit being such an idiot! One thing about this novel that I didn't like is that there is a sub-plot that seems very important, but it's just sort of left by the wayside as the novel comes to its end. However, I do recommend this novel and will be reading more by Ms. Weiner!
