Rating: Summary: Too much hype but informative. Review: Not everyone loses ten pounds the first week! Dr. Atkins should be a little more honest about the average dieter's experience--maybe one or two pounds a week. For me, a diabetic on insulin, the best part of the diet (beside losing sixteen pounds in fourteen weeks) was being able to reduce my injections to less than a quarter of the insulin I used before. Even my psoriasis looks better!
Rating: Summary: Great diet need some tips to jump start it Review: I had a baby 8 months ago and I gained a lot of weight I decided in February to start Dr. Atkins. I know many people who have lost significant amounts of weight. I feel very discouraged and don't know what I am doing wrong. I am not sure if I am suppose to drink a certain amount of water and exercise. Everyone I speak to tells me that is not the important part and that they really don't drink or exercise much. I would love to know what a typical day of drinking water and working out is required. I need to lose 30lbs and would love to lose 20 lbs by the end of JUNE. Everyone tells me that it is simple. Can anyone give a new mom who needs a pick me up in losing some excess weight advise. I would appreciate any tips that you can think that helped you lose weight. Thanks

Rating: Summary: This is the best diet ever!! Review: I have been doing the Atkins diet for 1.5 weeks now and lost about 6 lbs. I have been eating everything I want except carbs. Things that I would never eat before like bacon and whole fat mayonaise and lots of cheese. My appetite is drastically reduced for the first time in my life. This is so easy it almost seems silly, but it really works!
Rating: Summary: GRRRREAT! Review: I HAVE LOST 40 POUNDS IN FIVE MONTHS! REMEMBER THAT THE OLD PARADIGM NO LONGER HOLDS TRUE! IT IS NOT ONLY THE CALORIES YOU EAT MINUS THE CALORIES YOU BURN, BUT THE CALORIES YOU EAT MINUS THOSE THAT YOU BURN PLUS THE ONES YOU LOOSE IN YOUR URINE IN THE FORM OF "FAT METABOLITES" KETONE BODIES. SOME HINTS FOR THOSE WHO ARE HAVING TROUBLE INDUCING KETOSIS: 1) QUIT COFFEE FOR AT LEAST TWO WEEKS 2) QUIT NUTRASWEET FOR AT LEAST ONE MONTH 3) IF YOU HAVE EXTREME METABOLIC RESISTANCE TRY AN EARLY MORNING WALK OR JOG (THE LATER ONLY IF YOU HAVE MEDICAL CLEARANCE FOR DOING SO). 4) DO NOT TRY THE DIET WITHOUT READING THE BOOK FIRST! REMEMBER THAT THIS DIET IS NOT SUITABLE FOR TYPE I DIABETICS, PREGNANT WOMEN OR PEOPLE WITH RENAL DISEASE. IT DOES WONDERS FOR TYPE II DIABETICS BUT SINCE THE NEED FOR MEDICATIONS WILL DECREASE SO DRAMATICALLY, YOU WILL NEED TO CONSULT YOUR PHYSICIAN FIRST. GOOD LUCK ON THE ONLY DIET THAT WILL HOLD TRUE FOR THE NEXT MILLENNIUM!
Rating: Summary: Increase in energy equally important to weight loss for me. Review: I chose the Atkins diet based on the advice of my physcian whose specialty is Internal Medicine. Her goal is to help me increase energy and my sense of well being, lose weight, lower my cholesterol and reduce my high blood pressure. It has been her experience that this diet has done just that very successfully. At the completion of the induction period, I have lost 3.5 pounds and have increased my energy level 100%. I do look forward to adding in more vegetables and will be happy when I can once again have fruit. However, I have experienced very little hunger and have not needed to graze. It is important that you follow this plan under the supervision of your physician so that you do not make metabolic mistakes. And, supplement it as your physician recommends.
Rating: Summary: The book is excellent, however, I am not seeing the results. Review: I tried the diet for 14 days straight. At first, I lost 3 lbs in two weeks. For breakfast, I eat 2 eggs, 2 slices of bacon, and drink at least 24 ounces of water. For lunch, I eat a vegetable salad, no carrots, with small blocks of cheddar cheese and 24 ounces of water. For dinner, I normally eat a meat and some vegetables. Occasionally, I have a bowl of jello w/fat free whip cream after dinner. For snack during the day, I munch on no salt peanuts. I am wondering is the peanuts my problem because I, also, exercise at least 30 to 45 minutes 3 to 4 times weekly. Please help.. I am trying to lose 30 pounds.
Rating: Summary: I lost 50 pounds in 5 months! Review: Really. I started this diet as a trial to control my diabetes. By the end of the second day, my blood sugar readings were around 100 (SUPER!) 30 minutes after eating, and pretty much all of the time. Before I started, I had lost control from a dietary stand point and was averaging blood sugar reading around 200 three to four hours after eating (BAD!). I stayed on the diet until I lost my job for four months (conserved money by eating what was available), but am back on it because my blood sugar went back out of control (I also got a new job). Tips for people having problems. 1. It is hard to not eat carbs because we are accustomed to soing so and they are tasty to us, so it takes will-power. 2. Use a variety of foods, even things you don't like to eat from the list of "good" foods. Part of the problem is the lack of variety. Just think of the hundreds of foods that have carbs. You don't get anywhere near the same choice of variety when you cut them out. 3. MEASURE! MEASURE! MEASURE! Portion size and control is important. 4. Cheating WILL hurt! 5. Read the labels; ask when you eat out. 6. If you are worried about fat, severely trim it out before cooking or use fish and fowl instead. 7. Take your vitamins. I take 1 general supplement, one B complex supplement and 1000 mg of vitamin C twice a day. I've avoided several colds and other illnesses that my family got. 8. See a doctor. It can be inconvienent, but I find it better to be aware of my overall health and prevention is truly better than recovery. My diabetes was discovered about the same time as my parents'. They suffer some real damage and are under some expensive care. I found out 30 years sooner than them and can avoid the same fate by taking steps now to control my disease. 9. Talk about it with others. I've only found a couple who thought I was nuts. Just don't preach. That turns people off. 10. Reread the book periodically. Its hard to remember everything and as you change phases or go awhile in one phase, you are tempted to cheat. 11. Keep the faith. Sometimes I feel alone with this, but I know that I am doing myself some good. You are not alone, because I am here doing the same as you are. 12. Smile, it will make people wonder what you are up to.
Rating: Summary: Response to Disbeliever JOHN Review: My name is Chuck I read your review on Amazon.com about the book by Dr. Atkins "The New Diet Revolution." I have been on this diet for 14 months, Ive lost 124 lbs. You said that you have degrees in both Biology and Chemistry, are you familiar with Dr. Lubert Stryer, Professor of Biochemistry at Stanford University and the author of the biochemistry textbook used in most medical schools? He said that Ketones are "normal funnels of respiration and are quantitatively important as sources of energy." He goes on to say that "heart muscle, and the renal cortex (kidney) use ketones in preference to glucose. This diet is designed to put the body into a state of ketosis/lypolysis, not to be confused with the state of a diabetic which is called "ketoacidoses" which is the effect of diabetic persons having blood sugar that is out of control. Ketosis/lypolysis is the physiologic method of weight loss, the exact opposite of what made someone fat in the first place. Not the sedentary lifestyle you accuse. In fact Dr. George Cahill, the Harvard professor considered to be the preeminent teacher of metabolic-pathway research, after noting that the brain tissue utilizes ketones more readily than glucose, announced that ketone bodies were a "preferred fuel" for the brain. That is what this is, basic human physiology, it is not an anctedotal tale of some guy who lost fat when he at fat. This is the way my body as well as yours works, you obviously haven't read Dr. Atkins book, if you had you would be aware of everything that I am telling you. Yet, you feel as though you are an authority on the subject. Just because your body is not storing the excess carbohydrates in your diet as fat, does not mean that you are not susceptible to a myriad of other health related problems. Heart disease, cancer, high blood pressure, indigestion/reflux, high cholesterol, obesity are all symptoms related to one problem - hyperinsulinism. Being the educated college student that you are, I'm sure you know that you will never fix a problem by curing the symptoms. Just look at the prison system if you don't believe me. Losing weight, is just a side effect of becoming a much healthier human being.
