Rating: Summary: The real thing. Review: Prior to tearing my achilles tendon I weighed 220, after 4 months of rehab I was 250 even. I decided to go with Atkins' since it is the original diet plan, the diet which started the revolution. I'm only a week into the plan and have lost 15 pounds in 7 days. Like most of you I read the reviews online listing several complaints of the pain and agony of this diet. To date I have had none of these symptoms. As an athlete I know that physical success comes with a price, this diet may not be for everyone but it definitely works. Again, 15 pounds in seven days without any physical exercise, just a change in foods.
Rating: Summary: You'll Lose Weight Without Deprivation Review: I have been on Atkins for 3 months and have lost 27 lbs. The diet requires that you cut your carbohydrate intake drastically. There are 3 steps to the program: Induction, Ongoing Weight Loss (OWL) and Lifetime Maintenance. Induction is the hardest and strictest. It lasts 2 weeks and requires that you eat no more than 20 grams of carbs per day. You are allowed 3 cups of salad or 2 cups or salad and 1 cup veggies (i.e. mushrooms, broccoli, etc.) per day. I have remained on Induction for these past 3 months because I have a lot of weight to lose (60 lbs more to go!)I am a carb addict. I love sweets. I used to be able to eat chocolate for breakfast. So, the first 2 weeks are the hardest because your body is adjusting. However, once you get the hang of it, your cravings for carbs practically disappears. But you need to make sure your cupboards, fridge and freezer are stocked w/high protein, low carb foods and treats. This will make your life SO much easier. I have discovered low-carb breads, bagels (only 2.5 grams of carbs per bagel..wow!), low-carb ice cream, etc. I never feel deprived which makes this diet easy (albeit expensive at times). Go to www.atkins.com to get recipes, a free online journal, and articles. The website also tells you how to do the diet...all for free! The book is a good resource to go along with the website. But if you're new to the diet, or just considering it, go to the website first before you spend money on the book. Look at the before and after pics, read the motivational articles and learn what the diet is all about and why it works. With any diet, you have to *want* to lose weight. Ask yourself, is this bagel worth gaining weight over? (and now you don't have to ask that question...you just buy the low-carb version!) Good luck with your weight loss! :)
Rating: Summary: Great Book Review: "The doctors' philosophy in his book "Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution", sounds very reasonable. The recipes are good and easy to make. I believe in being health conscious, and this book seems to be a serious book on presenting the concept of health and weight maintenance. Rating: Summary: Diet Works But Hard to Stick To Review: The Atkins diet definitely works. You can lose 10 pounds in a couple of weeks, although your weight loss will slow down after a while. You lose your appetite and have lots of energy. The problem is that if you've eaten carbs for decades, let's say 30 years, it's really hard to not cheat on the diet and not eat carbs. Believe me, you just get carb and sugar cravings. And once you start cheating on the diet and eating carbs, the pounds come rushing back. I'm thinking of trying the South Beach or Zone diets, so I can include even more carbs. If you don't really care about carbs or don't have a sweet tooth, this diet would be perfect for you. If you stick to it, the weight will come off pretty fast and you'll never feel hungry and you'll have tons of energy. It's all true.
Rating: Summary: ANOTHER BOGUS DIET Review: SORRY ATKINS, but someone can lose more weight exercising and eating healthy over doing your diet. if your looking for a quick fix go on atkins but you can get the same result in the same timelength if you exercise for an hour a day or at least 5 days a week and eat a well balanced diet. ((carbohydrates)) are not bad - i lost about 18 pounds in a month and 14 days eating all the food groups and exercising. atkins leaves out some foods that are very good for you and allows you to eat the junk that isnt that healthy for you. i doubt atkins diet keeps the weight off long term - but eating healthy- ( eating all the food groups ) and exercising and getting used to eating that way and only having treats once in a while is more effective than atkins diet.
Rating: Summary: Sound approach, but not magic. Review: I wanted to rate the book a five, but I'm saving that for the diet that works by itself!! This diet, like many others, works if you follow it. I think your success will depend on the type of eater you are before starting the diet. For me, carbohydrates were not a significant part of my diet. Therefore, following this approach was easier for me. This book is well researched and the assertions/recommendations are supported with medical references. I think the research is what makes this diet different. More recently, we are seeing well respected medical journals publishing articles on low carb diets and supporting this approach to weight control. The key for me in using this book is remembering that even Atkins refers to the approach as an "advantage". There is no magic here. The advantage for me was that the reduction of carbs drastically reduced my cravings and (supposed) hunger. What I was left with was only my bad habits. The Atkins Advantage allowed me to address these bad habits (eating at night in front of the TV) and correct them. The advantage eliminates the highs (bursts of energy) and lows (needing a nap) that I used to experience throughout the day. Now, I feel steady, calm and my energy is constant throughout the day. People can take anything and make it bad. That applies to this diet. If you think you're going to eat bacon and fatty meats all day, every day, you're not getting it. Making sound food choices is still required. By selecting lean proteins and not over-doing the fat intake, I was able to lose weight. My carbs come from veggies and berries and I discovered that I enjoy eating healthy (although it is more expensive, of course). Atkins' approach is sound, but it is not magic. If bad habits are what make you overweight (which is my case), then this book can only clear the fog so you can see the real issue. I think this book is a great resource. The diet is not for everyone, but why not try and see if carbs are your problem. Everyone I know who has tried this approach, or similar approach (South Beach diet) does lose weight (how could you not). For me, like many others, keeping it off is the real challenge. I can't write on that phase of the book as I am in the Ongoing Weight Loss Phase. I'll write again when I'm on maintenance. Good luck.
Rating: Summary: Stop worrying, buy it! Review: I've been on Atkin's 2 months and 40 pounds lighter. You MUST read the book to get the whole idea. If you have 10-15 vanity pounds to lose...forget it. If you need to lose a considerable amount of weight, this is the way to go. Hard to do on vacation or if you eat out a lot, but if you can cook, this IS the diet for you.
Rating: Summary: Comprehensive, Doable, and healthy Review: The pros--like so many others, I have lost weight doing Atkins. I started two months ago and am down 20 lbs. That may seem nice, or even great--but it is much more. I am not a chronic dieter. I don't do fads. To be honest, I wasn't even doing the basics. Additionally, I'm not an excerciser. However, counting carbs is easy. Starting out with black and white rules (pastries, pasta, and refined grans = bad, proteins, fibers, and most veggies = good) was clear. I had enough options--even during the 20-carb gram-a-day induction phase to eat hearty and watch myself melt. Furthermore, Atkins is BALANCED! There are plenty of vegetables, and as one progresses towards target weight, fruits and unrefined whole grains reenter the dietary picture. In addition, though many start Atkins without exercise, the book and program stress its importance. Personally, I'm on the verge of renewing my exercise routine, now that I don't have to stare a mass of fat everytime I sit down on the bike. Caveats: Atkins has led several friends and coworkers I know to lighter, healthier lives. However--and Atkins stresses this--those who commit to a low-carb lifestyle MUST drink lots of water. High-protein, high-fat diets can lead to kidney stones (it happened to a friend of mine). Bottom-line: For those who are serious about weight-loss, and burning fat, Atkins will work marvelously. It is comprehensive, and the book can be used as a reference guide (it's easy to look for answers to specific questions). You will be more successful if you like meats and rich, creamy foods, and can give up on breads, pastas and sugary sweets.
Rating: Summary: Impossible way to live Review: I tried to follow this diet, but on the fourth night I was awoke by painful leg cramps, and I had severe constipation. This was ended by eating all the fruit I could eat. Within 15 minutes the cramps and headache that I had since the second day went away, and I felt fantastic. The fat from the diet turned my stomach. On the plate was several pieces of greasy chicken, and a handful of lettuce, or the same greasy bacon and eggs for breakfast. If you want to lose weight the sane way check out the book "volumetrics". It really goes into detail about these fad diets, and the damage they can do. I learned my lesson with the atkins diet, and the only way to lose weight is portion control.
Rating: Summary: This is the best diet of my life! Review: I am a retired dancer who lived low-fat high carb, and I could because I burned off the carbs! I didn't know what to do, and I found this wonderful book. After ten years of weight gain I have lost the 100lbs I put on and was able to get back to being active. My cholesterol is better than back in the "Ornish" days- that book makes sense, but unless you are an athlete forget it! We have been trained to believe the "low fat" lifestyle is the way. Well folks, this diet works better, faster, and your choices are fantastic. Anyone who says otherwise didn't read the book. There are lists in the book, the only problem I had was meal planning and having to cook instead of eating processed or pre-packaged foods. I saved so much money I now think nothing of buying prime cuts of meat, expensive seafood and exotic fruits. I admit is is difficult at first to give up the starches and sweets, but after living this lifestyle, nothing can make me go back to believing I need potatoes and rice. I am eating more veggies than ever in my life, lean protein and yes, even fruit for dessert. Yes, low fat is easier, but low carb is definitely the way to go. Read this book. Go get your cholesterol checked. Follow the rules and and get checked again. You will see that it really truly works, if you are responsible and read the book, you will live a healthy life. I am now working on giving up the low carb beer, nutrasweet and caffeine, three things I only cut down on. I can't wait to see what the next few weeks bring! The book itself is dry- yes- but worth it's weight in lobster!
