Rating: Summary: GREAT, and not just for weight loss! Review: Like most of the people reviewing this book, I'm really pleased to be losing weight: 9 pounds (4 kgs)so far. But because I started it to combat sugar sensitivity/fungal infection, however, it has been anything but easy. I've had the headaches, body aches, dizziness of withdrawal. Everything's relative, though. It's the first time in 6 years of struggling with my sugar intake that I've really been able to control my eating habits. Until I read this book, I didn't realise that all those non-sugary carbohydrates were part of my problem, too. I'm astonished to find myself quite effortlessly saying, "No thanks; I can't/don't eat that." One thing you should be aware of on a high-protein diet like this, however, is a possible problem with excess uric acid, a by-product of digesting protein. I find I have to keep reminding myself to drink enough water all the time to avoid symptoms of dehydration. Don't miss Atkins' warning that this diet is NOT for people who are pregnant or have kidney problems. For anyone else out there with chronic fungal/candida/sugar-craving problems: READ THIS BOOK!
Rating: Summary: Dangerous Review: A decade ago, I tried Dr. Atkins' diet and followed it religously for six months. I sucessfully maintained a state of ketosis about 90% of the time. Sure, I lost an incredible amount of weight, but I was sick most of the time while I was on it... headaches, shakiness, sweats... and as soon as I discontinued the diet, the weight came back with a vengeance. It may work for some people, but it is CRITICALLY IMPORTANT that you consult a doctor or nutritionist before you try it. Ketosis is a very dangerous metabolic state and the weight loss results are temporary.

Rating: Summary: Hey, has anyone out there checked their cholesterol lately? Review: In January of '99 I had a complete blood work up. My total cholesterol was 230. Three weeks ago I began the Atkins diet. I loved it. Any why not? I got to eat cheese and meat ad nauseum (and I was frequently nauseated). Last week I had anothrt blood work-up: My cholesterol had skyrockerted nearly 50 points to 279! Now, as a rational human being I realize that only three weeks of the Atkins diet could not have been responsible for that huge jump in total cholesterol...but it sure as hell didn't help. Watch yourselves out there, folks. And have your cholesterol checked!
Rating: Summary: odd timing Review: Why haven't people figured this out before now? This is the only diet that's worked for me, and I'm not going to waste your time with yet another testimony, so on to my point: mankind has been around for a fairly long time, and now there are billions of us, and we're just now figuring out how to easily lose weight? What's the deal here? This diet COULD have been figured out centuries ago with a bit of trial and error, it seems to me. I find this bizarre. Bruce Mihura
Rating: Summary: This diet flies in the face of current norms - and it works! Review: Before I read this book, I'd been eating low-fat foods for several years, and was gaining weight steadily. I was always hungry and constantly eating. I craved high-carbohydrate foods. On the Weight Watchers 1-2-3 Success plan, I could only lose 1/2 pound a week, and it was excruciatingly difficult. The slightest mistake, and I was back up several pounds. I was skeptical about the material in Dr. Atkins' book - his writing was anything but concise, and I had a hard time believing what he said. Now I've been on the induction diet for 2 weeks, and I've already lost 9 pounds. Finally, I have the incentive I need not to cheat. And it's true what he says about hunger. I am hardly ever hungry! I was addicted to carbohydrates, and now I feel normal again. No more uncontrollable eating sprees for me.
Rating: Summary: I feel great! Review: I started this diet 3 months ago and have lost around 25 lbs. I went from 155 to around 130, lower than I was in high school. I feel nothing but great on this diet, and look better than I did when I was heavily into figure skating and worked out everyday for 14 years. I'm sick of hearing everyone who has had bad experiences with this diet go off on it. How can consuming low amounts of sugar be harmful to you? Maybe if some of the people who have failed at this or think it's bad for you should read the book, then have an opinion on it. I have never felt better or looked better, and I know that all of you out there who think that "low-fat" is the way, good luck, but I'm gonna stick with something that actually works.

Rating: Summary: The Dr. Atkins Diet plan in my opinion is great! Review: In February 1998 I went to my doctor for a check-up. My weight at that time was 280 lbs and I was always tired and sleeping all the time. He ran some blood tests and found that my blood sugar was high (416) and that I had to loose weight and go on this 1200 calory diet plan. I was very upset and when glancing at the diet plan, I said to myself, there is no way I can stick to this diet plan. I would always be hungry, but I knew I had to loose weight because I did not want to take medication. Then I remembered my sister-in-law sent me a diet plan in the form of a book which she had tried and lost a lot of weight. The book was put away for 5 years. Then I remembered where I put it and the name of the book was "Dr. Atkins Diet Revolution". I began to read it and I got very excited because what I was reading made since. Doctors tell you, you need to each so many helpings of fruits and vegetables, starches and grains but my body is not able to break all of those carbohydrates down and therefore I gain weight. I immediately started this diet and in one week I had to go back to the doctor to check my blood sugar again and the doctor was amazed I had lost 5 lbs in one week. He thought his diet plan was working, little did he know I was on a no-carbo diet plan. I went to the doctor three weeks in a row and each week I lost between 4-6 lbs. It has now been 18 months later and I have lost a total of 52 lbs and have not regained. This have become a way of life for me and I love it. There was a time when I hated to take pictures and if someone did take a picture of me I would not look at it. Now I can take a picture and actually like what I see. I still have more pounds to loose, but I am convinced that this diet plan works. My blood sugar is normal, my triglycerides are low and I am working on getting my cholesterol down. I have been an advocate for this diet plan from the first time I tried it. I have started a revolution in my church and my family by telling them about the plan and encouraging them to just try it. There were several that did and have lost weight and were very pleased with the plan. Again, this is a great diet plan and it really does work!!!! Try it for yourself.
