Review: My husband has diabetis and high everything--you name it, he had it! Now he has been on Adkins diet (way of life,really) for 2 yrs. and his doctor says "keep it up", all tests come up normal,what else can one say except"Thanks"!!

Summary: I did it!!!!!!
Review: I have been trying to lose weight for 5 years, gaining over 100 pounds in those five years. Hey, it happens. I tried lo-fat, no-fat, starving, pills, you name it. At the insistence of my daughter (thanks and bless you, Sweetheart), I tried the Aikens Diet and since Monday, 10/11, I have lost over 7 pounds. It took me over two months to lose that with diet meds and walking over three miles each day. I was convinced that nothing, especially eating meat, cheese, eggs, butter, etc., would work for me. I can't believe this. I'm a totally different person -- I feel empowered and I have taken control of my weight instead of it taking control of me. Please, please, do yourself a favor and just try it -- IT DOES WORK! Skeptics: give it two weeks. If it doesn't work, what have you lost? If it does, you will have gained so much (and it won't be weight)!

Summary: You don't have to be fat.
Review: I watched a colleague lose twenty pounds in a month and asked him how he did it. Being frustrated with starvation regimens recommended by professional dieticians, I bought Atkins' book and started the diet. In a couple of months I went from 250 pounds to 210 pounds. The weight loss was around the belly primarily and mostly fat. As Dr. Atkins said they would in his book, my cholesterol and triglycerides have went down (162, 66) and my HDL's have went up (60). My physician has seen these effects over and over in people who reduce their carbohydrates down to sane levels. Give it a try for a couple of months and as Dr. Atkins recommends have blood work done to build your confidence that you are doing the right thing. The only hard thing may be that food that you always thought was good for you (in my case potatoes and pasta) should be eaten in limited quantities (notice I didn't say eliminated). Filter out the shrieking dieticians for a couple of months; you won't regret it.

Summary: This is the best thing that has happened to me!!
Review: The Atkins Diet is truley for a lifetime! My husband and I have tried alot of different ways to lose weight and nothing ever worked. According to the Blood Type Diet, my husband should have been a veggie eater....needless to say that book didn't come home! The Atkins Diet is awesome, however it really isn't for everyone. If there was a diet out there made just for everyone, weight watchers would be out of business. We have been on the Atkins PLAN since February 99 and I have lost 40 pounds and my husband has lost 20 pounds! I manage a health club and I have received alot of compliments and they all want to know what I did. My father is doing a version of the plan, his carb intake has cut in half and he is now exercising and he has lost 15 pounds, my father-in-law has also lost about 17 pounds. This plan works, you just have to READ the book through and totally understand it. Just remember that first of all, if you don't like meat..it won't work for you. We love it and plan to stay on it!

Summary: Be Careful
Review: Following any of the low-carb, high-protein diets will definitely cause pounds to fall off. What these books do not stress, however, is the eight glasses of water a day. Actually 10 or 15 might be better. Much of the weight you lose right away will be water loss. After 10 weeks, a person could lose 35 pounds easily, leading him to be tricked into going off the diet. I did this. I lost about 18 pounds, but quickly gained 13 back. The net loss of five pounds wasn't bad, but had I done things properly, I can only imagine where I'd be. Do not be fooled by the rapid weight loss; let it inspire you to keep going.

Summary: I Had Given Up All Hope of Ever Losing Weight!!!
Review: Thank you so much Dr. Atkins for standing up to all the criticism from the AMA and other "so-called" diet & nutrition experts! I thought there was something seriously wrong with me - that I lacked the discipline/willpower to eat "right" and lose the weight that had been steadily creeping up since High School. Then I read this book and realized I'm OK - it's the food we've all become accustomed to eating that's not OK. We've become a country full of carbohydrate and junk food junkies. We're being told that the only way we can lose weight is to follow the same old restrictive low-cal/low-fat diet that just doesn't work. Why are we all expected to metabolize food the same way? The AMA keeps recommending the same diet for everyone in the world & it's about time someone stood up and shouted "It's NOT WORKING!!!" We're getting fatter and fatter & so many people are dying each year from heart disease - it's truly frightening. Thank God and Dr. Atkins for this diet plan. Finally I am no longer craving junk food/bready stuff/sweets all day every day. I am eating normal meals and have seen symptoms I never would have attributed to carbs/sugar disappear. I no longer have headaches and neck aches. I am sleeping better and feel great. In the 2 mos. I have been on it I've lost 10 pounds and have gone from a size 22 to a size 18 and can honestly say I will get back to a size 12/14 without ever feeling deprived or hungry. This is one diet that never feels like a diet. After 2 days the cravings went away & I completely adjusted to my new and permanent way of eating. You couldn't pay me to go back to my old ways. This is too easy. If you're considering buying this book, I'd also recommend the low carb cookbook and the carb gram counter as well. They are a great help! I can't say this enough....thank you, thank you, thank you Dr. Atkins!

Summary: The Mans How-To Book For Eating, But Losing Weight
Review: I read the book after hearing from many who have lost weight on Dr. Atkins diet. It is informative, as well as motivational. I have lost 5 pounds in one week, but more importantly I've begun to eat foods that I thought were taboo! I grew up on eggs and bacon in the morning, but cut them out when all the 'scientific medical' literature came in the 70's and 80's concerning fats and LDL's. The biochemistry makes good sense that your body will burn its fat reserves faster if it has less sugar to use as energy. Now that my philosophy on eating has reversed..that is back to what it was as a kid, I can now enjoy meats, fowl, fish, and eggs like I used to..and shed pounds at the same time. If you are serious about losing weight, Dr. Atkins plan is what you need to be on.

Summary: Food pyramid is upside down..low carbs way to go!
Review: I have been involved with diet and nutrition for nearly 20 years and I believe this diet makes complete scientific sense. The way your body stores and uses sugars is in correlation with what Dr. Atkins suggests. I have lost 5lbs in a little over two weeks and never once felt hungry and much of the mental "fog" I use to have is gone. I have used the ketosis strips and they confirm that I am in fat burning mode. Didn't have blood work done, but probably will, to check cholestrol levels, etc... My sugar cravings as well as cravings for bread, pasta and other high carb food has significantly decreased. The most interesting thing I discovered is when you check the label on "low fat" foods you will see how much sugar and carbohydrate are added to those products compared with "regular" versions of the same product...no wonder it was so hard to lose weight and I always felt hungry making it harder for me to stick to low fat diets.

Summary: Excellent Diet, but hard to read text
Review: I have been on this diet for 1 week and have lost 8 pounds. I feel so much better, although still a little sleepy late in morning. Definitely no hunger! I was disappointed in the books readability, however, and the lack of recipes. Considering choices and being a somewhat picky eater, I"have" to eat a lot of bacon, eggs and sausage, which does tend to get old. The plus is we've had halloween candy, oreos and cake around the house and I really don't even WANT it! I was able to turn down my absolute favorite meal of chicken and noodles with mashed potatoes and watch everyone eat it in front of me on the 5th day of my diet. I plan to try the induction diet for as long as I feel good on it. If you do this diet- TAKE YOUR SUPPLEMENTS!

Summary: Revised???
Review: The book which claims to be a revised version was not proof read. The book seems to have been slapped together in a hurry. You will see what I mean when you have to re-read a sentence 2-3 times until you realize you didn't read it wrong. It gets to be really annoying. It's a good thing the good Dr. was never an english teacher!!! I've been on the diet for a week or so and feel alot better, but I am still on a restricted diet!! You have to limit your intake of sugars, white flour, starches etc... But you can eat all the fat you want!! I guess you can't win them all!!
