Summary: Proceed with caution
Review: I do believe this diet can work, but it's not for everyone - and not for me nor my husband. We followed it religiously for 2 weeks. The first week we both lost 1 lb per day - great. The 2nd week my husband started gaining weight - we still don't know why. I felt nauseous and ill the entire time I was on the diet, despite nutritional supplements, etc. The upshot is, this diet enabled us to cut out sugar and severely restrict carbs from our diet. However, we now eat vegetables (except corn, carrots, and potatoes) and 1 pc. fruit per day and feel much healthier. This diet was just too extreme for us. We now follow a diet similar to the Sugar Busters diet and feel much better than we did on Atkin's diet.

Summary: So far, so good!
Review: After reading many of the "cheers and jeers" I feel compelled to add my two cents. First of all, I have battled weight, food, and a low metabolism my entire life. I am an emotional eater who is addicted (physically) to carbs. I don't believe that any one diet is good for everyone. People are different, as is their body chemistry. I have only been on the diet for 3 weeks but as far as I am concerned I have found something that works for me. I no longer obsess about food. I eat three squares a day without feeling hungry and I feel better than I have in a long time. I don't expect to follow this plan for the rest of my life. There will come a time when I will re-introduce fruits and vegetables. But, for me I will more than likely need to steer clear of breads, pastas and other carbs, as they are the biggest triggers for me. At this point however, I am willing to be a little extreme in my methods of getting to a healthy weight than to deal with the risks of being severely obese. I will continue with Atkins' until it no long helps in obtaining my goal. I too had some negative reactions to the diet my first week, but they passed as soon as I withdrew from all the sugar and carbohydrates that I was consuming. I wish everyone on this plan good thoughts and for those who are unable to follow it for whatever reason, I hope you find something that works.

Summary: Worked for an exotic dancer
Review: I really enjoyed this book. I am an author, a Chi Gung master, and an exotic dancer and I thought I would try this diet to see if it could get me to the look I really needed in my line of work. It worked for me!

Summary: Lo Carb's the Answer But...
Review: This diet taught me about lowering carbs - I totally agree that Americans today eat far too much sugar-based product, and unfortunately that has ruined them for eating "good" carbs like fruits and hi-carb veggies that are wonderful, like carrots, broccoli, etc., in large quantities.

I did this diet when I was in my twenties and lost about twenty pounds and looked great. Unfortunately, I found I couldn't gag down another cow, chicken or dairy farm if my life depended on it after two months. Thus, I gained most of the weight back pretty quickly. Part of the problem is that knowing you can't eat carbs makes you crave them all the more.

Currently doing the Carbohydrate Addicts Diet and finding it far easier. With the Atkins diet, despite all the water-drinking and eating all the protein I wanted, I felt lousy - dizzy, exhausted, irritable - but after a few days on the Carb Addicts Diet I'm doing fairly well.

Once again - these things are merely TOOLS for education. I treat my body like a health experiment in progress, and the big decisions have to come from me, not some so-called expert who wants to make big bucks from a best-selling diet book, which, sorry to say, I believe Dr. Atkins and the Hellers who wrote the Carb Addicts book are. When I read interviews with Dr. Atkins in which he called someone who eats a toast or carrot-inclusive breakfast "dumb," I think he sounds kind of abusive.

In fact, I do believe the Atkins Diet is basically harmful for people, and, since I am a vegetarian (I do eat fish) I think it's also disgusting - all that consumption of animal flesh makes me shudder. Believe me, I was a big meat-eater most of my life, but I realized that it was time to stop slaughtering animals when there were so many healthy alternatives to protein consumption in our clever culture.

Also - since I got off meat, pork and chicken I have none of the arthritic symptoms I used to have and no food allergies, including Irritable Bowel Syndrome and mouth soreness after eating certain foods. I think it was the chemicals in all that meat and chicken.

Still, I gave this diet book three stars because I think Atkins is largely responsible for the awareness that carbs are big culprits in our national weight/overreating problem.

Summary: On second day
Review: I only gave it 1 star because Ive just started using it, so I have no judgement yet. Can someone email me and tell me why I keep hearing that Ketosis is dangerous to the body. So how can he advocate it? I really want to have results on this "diet" but I am finding it hard to do, and I am thinking about quiting. And for everyone who has claimed weight loss, did you incorporate exercise in it or not. If you didn't please let me know. Also does anyone know of a web site for support or to have questions answered. PLEASE WRITE BACK

Summary: Proof in Bloodwork and on scale......
Review: Dieticians, nutritionists and doctors can offer all the skepticism they want. I have proof in my blood work and on the scale.... I had my cholesterol checked July 29, 1999. Cholesterol was a whopping 293. Triglycerides were 186. LDL was 208 and HDL was 43.5. I started the "diet" August 25th. September 29th I had my blood work redrawn..... Cholesterol went from 293 to 168! Triglycerides were 208 - now 69! LDL was 208 - now 102 and HDL was 43.5 - now 48.5. I "cheat" occasionally but get right back to eating low carb. the next day. I feel great, have lost 35 pounds and am looking forward to losing more.

Summary: This diet has worked for me
Review: It's true that this diet may not work for everyone, but it has worked for me. I've been overweight as long as I can remember, and went to great lengths to try to loose weight, including bulimia and any other stupid fad that was out there. When I got married, my husband helped me stop this, but being a devoted low-fat dieter, I was still gaining weight, slowly, but steadily. A friend of mine started this diet and looked great, so I asked her about it and then I BOUGHT the book and READ IT CAREFULLY, TWICE. I then started the diet and IT WORKED. Almost a year later, I feel great, look great and am almost at my goal. I've taken the diet slowly and enjoy many fruits and vegetables while loosing pounds and inches. At 5'3, I've gone from a size 18 to an 8-6. Those results impress the heck out of me!

P.S. To all you detractors, of course you'll gain if you go back to your old eating habits! DUH! That's what got you in trouble in the first place.

Summary: Okay people...Listen up!!!!
Review: I read this book about 2 years ago at which time I will admit, I thought it made a whole lot of sense, but I lacked the motivation to actually put it to the test. Also, I was a little skeptical and bothered by the almost complete restriction of veggies. Since then, I've discovered the Protein Power Plan and must give Dr.Adkins his due. He made the discovery and the Drs. Eade [creators of the Protein Power Plan] have simply taken what doesn't work, added veggies and suggested leaner cuts of meat to make the plan a healthier one,and there's not a soul alive that can tell me that this plan does not work and will not work for absolutely EVERYONE! For starters..some people who have claimed it doesn't work are cola addicts. HELLO!..SUGAR SUGAR SUGAR..even diet sodas are so sweet that they can trick your insulin to activate and act adversely on your body. I am not yet 2 months into this plan and have lost 22 lbs. I have been experiencing a severe problem with acne since my last born and everyone including my doctors were convinced it was hormonal. Well, since beginning this food plan, my acne has almost completely cleared up. A perk I wasn't expecting, but am very ,very excited about. As to constipation..NONE...NADA...NIL! I choose my veggies carefully. I can have 1/2 plate of broccoli or cauliflower. Or a ton of cabbage or lettuce or spinache-or 10 spears of asparagus[my personal favorite]. These veggies contain the highest amount of fibre with the least amount of carb content and this is what I eat with my lean cut of meat. I must say this now, I eat healthier now than I ever have in my entire life, and my weight problem developed after I quit smoking and was told that I must drop the protein and fat and increase the carbs. NO AMOUNT OF EXERCISE made any difference at all in my weight. Since beginning this plan, I have lost 7 1/2 inches off my waist and 5 inches off my hips. I have far more energy and am much happier than I have been in almost a decade. I have since had my blood pressure checked and my Dr. almost fell on the floor from the numbers. Apparently my blood pressure is that of a 15 yr. old, and I am 33 and weighed in at 203 lbs when I began. I have, according to my first aid instructor, a "beautiful radial pulse" and have normal to below normal cholesterol and tryglicerides. I lost 6 lbs in the first week! I still have an occassional dessert just cause I feel like it and sometimes have cheesies for a snack. For all of you struggling, I implore you, give it a try. It WILL work. PROMISE! But you must follow it like it says and don't cheat too often. I fully endorse the Protein Power Plan, and also feel that the Adkins diet is okay too. Just remember-muscle cramps?...TAKE POTASSIUM!!! Good luck and greater success!!!!!And don't forget those multivitamins! We have so oversterilized the soil we grow our veggies in that they have virtually no vitamins anymore! Good luck and greater success!!!!!
