Rating: Summary: Great for diabetics Review: I have been on this diet for 4 weeks now and I have lost 10 pounds. The weight loss is a bonus to me as the real benefit is in my desease. I have been diabetic since I was 25 and have fasting glucose levels on 300+ in the morning. I was taking 20 units of insulin a day. On this diet I am normal. I do not need insulin even though I check my blood sugar every day to make sure I stay normal from 300+ to 85-120 that is a reality folks. It works for me. Also my blood pressure which was a bit high has dropped off to normal as well. I highly recommend this diet.
Rating: Summary: This diet will only work for less than 1% of the population Review: I am a personal trainer and nutritionist with about 3 years of experience. The Atkins program will not work forever and has many health risks. Remember that unless you have a specific disease, carbohydrates are your primary energy source and should make up at least 45% of your total caloric intake. The atkins diet will raise your cholesterol, deplete muscle tissue, decrease bone density and many other things. There are over 30,000 diets out there that attempt to isolate very specific and in many cases inaccurate philosophies. There is not one diet that will work for everyone. If you are serious about changing your body visit a registered dietition or a gym with Apex Nutrition Programs (24 hour fitness). Also remember that exercise should become part of your life.
Rating: Summary: Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution Review: My husband and I have been overweight for years, and we've tried everything to lose weight. We did Weight Watchers for awhile and lost a little bit of weight, but we were still hungry and quit. We met some people who lost a lot of weight on this diet and after reading the book, it made so much sense to us that the reason we were overweight is because we were living on carbohydrates. The first two weeks were a struggle for me, because I'm a chocolate lover, but after 7 weeks on the diet, I am 16 pounds lighter and my husband is 26 pounds lighter and we are still working on the last 20 pounds, but we know it will happen because of the success we show so far. I do want to say that we try to keep our protein choices to a lower-fat version and only eat steak about once a week. We both feel so much better and have much more energy. I realize now that all the fatigue I was experiencing before was due to the carbohydrates. My husband also went to his doctor because he is being treated for high blood pressure and had all the blood work done and his blood pressure is down and so is his cholesterol. The doctor is pleased with his progress. I recommend this way of eating to anyone whose diet consists of a lot of pasta, bread, and sugar to try to diet and you will see the results we have. I'm looking foward to next summer, when I won't feel embarassed to wear my bathing suit.
Rating: Summary: The food plan that ended a 30 year diet! Review: I have been a Diabetic since age 19 in the early 70's. At that time, a ketogenic diet was so resticted that it was impossible to keep weight off or even want to. I've been 120lb and over 240lbs and miserable at both weights. Food choices where limited and calories counted. Boring and aimed at failure. This book helped me change a lifetime of bad eating habits and is going to follow me into the next century. Do not believe that it is simple. A persons metabolic rate changes with each diet tried over a long period of time. It took 3 months before I started to lose the weight and not the two weeks you are lead to believe in the book. That just goes to show that each person will have a different rate of lose. I now know that for the rest of my life my carb limit is between 50-75 each day. More then that and I will regain the 30lbs I've lost.Read the book carefully and call the Atkins clinic if you have more questions. Counting carbs and not calories will help you and this book should be first on everyones Christmas list. PW in Vermont
Rating: Summary: It works! Review: I bought this book about a month ago. I weighed 265-270 pounds. After a month on the diet I am now under 240 and feel the best I have ever felt in my life. This really does work. I had before this tried a lot of other diets, and minimal results. I owe my new outlook on life and my new attitude to Dr. Atkins.
Rating: Summary: fat fighting Review: This diet is the only one that has really worked for me. This is inspite of the fact that I seem to be one of a very few people who have to reduce their carbohydrate intake to almost nil. I feel great & have more energy than I can remeber. I first tried this diet in the seventies & lost heaps then but what with onething & another I went back to bad eating habits. Now having put on so much weight after chemotherapy & taking 10 years to lose 10kg Dr Atkins diet was mentioned on TV & I decided to go back on it. Its as easy as you want it to be & the strangest thing is I find that it is easier to resist temptation than when I was eating carbohydrates
Rating: Summary: Dangerous!!!!!!!! Review: DO THIS DIET AT YOUR OWN RISK. WHAT IS SO HEALTHY ABOUT BEING CONSTIPATED, DEHYDRATED AND REPELLING PEOPLE WITH BAD BREATH? GET OFF THE BANDWAGON AND INTO SOME RUNNING SHOES.
Rating: Summary: The Iliad is 5 stars, not a diet book Review: I can't give this book more than one star because that is where it belongs. More stars are for books of substance. Now to review the diet since I think that is what people are more interested in. I give it a 0. This diet is dangerous. If you go on it long enough, it can kill you. We live in a society that needs instant gratification at all costs. The only people benefiting from this diet are Atkins himself and the meat industry. Do yourself a huge favor and do it the old fashined way, exercise, eat smart, exercise, and you guessed it, exercise. a little more.
Rating: Summary: Great diet, misinformed critics Review: I have been on the diet for about 2 months and I've already lost 25 lbs. I feel better than ever, I sleep better, and most importantly, my self-esteem has gone up as well. One thing that really bugs me is how people will comment on the diet with a negative rating and they haven't even tried it! Before writing a one or two (badly written, by the way) review, why don't you read the WHOLE book, understand the science behind it and then back up your argument by actually trying it! Give it a chance. It works. Also, many dieters like myself come to this review board to gain support and enthusiasm when we're feeling down and frustrated about ourselves. Do not taint it by putting up senseless, useless comments that everyone skips over and does not bother to read, anyway. Keep on reaching for your goals, everyone. And don't be discouraged, because you will make it!
Rating: Summary: This book changed our lives! Review: I highly recommend this book. My husband and I have followed the plan since April, 1999 and he has lost over 20 pounds and I have lost over 10 pounds. While the induction phase is a little tough, after 2-3 weeks we found it to be a way of life that has has been easy to sustain.
