Rating: Summary: The New You Review: This book was a life changing event for me. I seem to always have medical problems. I have arthritis in my hips and I was always tired. Not to mention overweight. I started the Atkins diet in February of 1999 and by May 1999 I had lost over 35 pounds. I do want to mention that I wasn't always loyal to the no-carb diet - I did cheat but not a lot. The pain in my hips has decreased considerably and my energy level is up. It is so nice not having to take naps at lunch. I've tried many programs and they never worked. It is now December 1999 and I watch what I eat (not a lot of carb's) and my weight stays the same. I loved Dr. Atkins book. After reading it, it made perfect sense in how our bodies work. I would highly recommend this book to anyone.

Rating: Summary: Blood in your $h!+ and other related problems Review: Just kidding, but it seems that the Adkins' folks are intolerant to opposinv views. If you post a serious question on one of their sites, the remove your post and do not answer your questions. I do think Adkins is on to something. He is right about insulin and the need to contron its cycle. I think the diet is a good quick fix, but now without the downsides. Many medications have its side effects, so does the Adkins diet.
Rating: Summary: The tests are in! Review: My mom and I are both on the diet. My mom has lost over 15lbs. She used to suffer from headaches, but has not had one since she started the diet. I lost about 17lbs. I also got my bloodwork back from my doctor. I have very normal blood pressure and low cholesterol all the other items that were checked were normal. I talk to my doctor about the diet and she gave me 2 thumbs up. I love the diet and so does my mom.
Rating: Summary: Low carbo diet makes me eat lesser and better Review: Maybe this book sounds crazy for a lot of people. I find it crazy too when comparing to what I have been told traditional about healthy diet. However when I listen clearly to my body instead of my head. It makes perfect sense. I have tried both diets; low on meat high on wheat and the other way around. I noticed that when I eat more wheat product than meat I feel more tired. I have to eat more. I feel the difference especially when doing heavy sports. After switching back to a full meat diet, I perform at least two times better in sport. Also,I am in a profession that mental strength and creativity are very important. I find that I can't keep focus and think fast when I am on a wheat diet. I've tried so hard to restrict myself from eat more meat than wheat. Especially when the whole society looks at you like a barbarian when they see you putting chucks of meat in your mouth, you feel like eating lessor meat is a good discipline and a sign of well-being. My whole family especially my mother will protest when they see me having more meat than rice or pasta on my plate. I am always afraid of having bad health or having a heart attack because of my diet. But after proofing to myself what works better, I just have to listen to my body not my head. One thing I specially noticed is that my craze for food is a lot lower when I am on a low carbo diet.
Rating: Summary: SENT BY AN ANGEL Review: I LOVE YOUR BOOK, AND ALL THE COMMENTS OF PEOPLE LOOSING SO MUCH WEIGHT, I WILL START SOON. IS THERE A SUPPORT GROUP IN SAN DIEGO? I REALLY NEED ONE. ANY INFORMATION WILL HELP.
Rating: Summary: Moderation, exercise, moderation, exercise Review: I was originally wary of this diet because of the possible effects on your kidneys, etc. This is due to the high protein potentially causing dehydration; and yet, the simplest answer for me was to drink the 8-10 glasses of water a day that you're supposed to drink even if you're not on some special diet. I was excited when I actually lost weight I had struggled to lose on other diets. But I found myself eventually falling back on my mother's old adage. If it seems too easy, it probably is. Carbohydrates are necessary - the key is to keep intake to moderate levels, which is more of a focus in the maintenance program. I prefer to stick to the more healthy forms of protein - fish, lean poultry, and I occasionally include some natural starches - potatos, etc. The bottom line is that I always felt the best way to lose or keep weight off was to eat healthy and exercise, exercise, exercise. This book educated me on how to tailor my own eating habits, but I must admit I don't follow it to the letter. This book emphasizes what a "fat" society we have become. But I think it's less what we eat and more that we've become really lazy, and I didn't think this book emphasized good ole fashioned exercise enough.
Rating: Summary: Side effects of this diet Review: This diet has some side effects.....extra energy, feeling full all the time, no more "afternoon sleepies" at work, pleasant sleep at night, and weight loss. If you do not wish to experience these side effects, this diet is not for you. When I was in the army 7 years ago I was overweight. I ran 2 miles everyday and did muscle building exercises. I still remained overweight even after 2 YEARS of doing these activities. Not only overweight, but had a high bodyfat %. What was the reasoning? Too many carbohydrates. I was even on a 1500 calorie per day plan that had almost 0 fat, but very high carbs. Didn't help me at all. A few months ago I found this Way of Life. It all made sense to me. I tried it and I love it. I could eat T-bone steak every night for the rest of my life and never get sick of it. I lost 16lbs. in the first 3 weeks on this diet and have lost a total of 28lbs in 3 months. I look better, feel better and can't stress enough how wonderful this plan is. And yes on weekends I can eat nachos or a plate of fries or a big bowl of pasta with breadsticks or whatever I want and I still lose weight. I'll agree the book isn't too entertaining, but the plan itself is amazing. Highly recommended for overweight people.
Rating: Summary: It did not work for us ! Review: I have tried this diet and I was very excited about it at the begining, but after a week I did not experience any weight loss. I have been very strict and did not cheat even ones. Never the less myself and my wife did not loose any weight. One good thing came out of it is that I am sick of meats and fats that have always been a major risk factor for our health. Now I will diet on only carbs for a few weeks till I get sick of them too. Then with vegitables and fresh fruits left in my daily diet I think I will be a much healthier person. Good luck to all of you people like myself that have been trying to loose weight for all of these years. I gave it 2 stars because it gives you more insight about diets and how your body reacts to them.
Rating: Summary: Diet not for me and not for some of my friends Review: I tried this diet religiously for 6 weeks and lost a total of two pounds (all I wanted to lose was 10 lbs). I have met other women with similiar results( and they also only wanted to lose a few pounds). I have also met other people who have lost a great deal of weight, although they had a significant amount of weight to lose. I am not sure why this diet works for some, and not for others. I am looking into the Schwarzbein diet, which appears to be more balanced and low carb. I wish Adtkins would do more research !
