Summary: Not For Me...
Review: F.Y.I.-------- I anxiously went to the bookstore and purchased this book based on all the hype surrounding it. I was very excited when I read the first few chapters and saw myself reflected in the pages. Upon completion of the book, I followed the diet as described to the letter. However one week into the program, I could not get rid of the oily taste in my mouth from all the fats I was eating on a daily basis. At the end of this week I became sick to my stomach from all the excess fat in my diet. I agree this diet probably works well for some people but not all. I spoke with a woman I work with about my problems with this diet and she concurred that she had to quit it for the same reasons.

Summary: 14 day Induction
Review: I lost 9lbs on the 14 day induction plan, I did not believe that I could lose weight by eating and omelet with cheese and turkey bacon for breakfast. For those who complain that the diet requires eating too much meat, I ate chicken for the majority of my meals. I found that after 2 days I no longer had a craving for carbohydrates. My energy level increased tremendously, I recommend that anyone that is skeptical should try the 14 day induction diet.

Summary: The Best Christmas Present to Myself!
Review: I am still excited about the Atkins low carb way of eating! I've been low carbin' for 1 1/2 years. I'll NEVER GO back to my high carb, low fat, semi vegetarian ways again. I had to go hungry to be slim back then. Now I feel great about the way I look and I feel SO SATISFIED eating this way! I wear a size 4 (at Target, even less at the more expensive stores) I feel even better about my health. No more painful gas,my daily sinus headaches are rare now, my muscle tone is better than ever, I am so PROUD to be 40 years old & slim. I am looking forward to wearing my skinny Christmas outfits and feeling great at the same time! Merry Christmas & go for it!

Summary: DIET WORKS
Review: YESTERDAY I COMPLETED THE 14-DAY INDUCTION PART OF THE DIET. I DID NOT BELIEVE THAT ANYONE COULD LOSE WEIGHT BY EATING AN OMELET WITH CHEESE AND (TURKEY) BACON FOR BREAKFAST. . I LOST 9LBS AND FEEL GREAT. AFTER THE 2ND DAY OF THE DIET I NO LONGER HAD AN URGE FOR CARBS, MY ENERGY LEVEL INCREASED TREMENDOUSLY. FOR THOSE WHO COMPLAIN THAT THE DIET REQURES EATING TOO MUCH MEAT, I LOST BY EATING CHICKEN AS MY MAIN MEAT. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE DIET.

Summary: It's working for me
Review: All I can say is that it's working for me. I've been on it for 2 months and lost 20lbs. I believe I can eat this way forever. My cravings are gone, my heartburn is gone, my feet don't hurt anymore, no more headaches. Losing weight is an added bonus! Once the cravings for carbs and caffeine were gone (in the first 3 days) I felt better and more energetic than I have in years. My doctor said, "If it works for you, stay with it" I plan to. Thank you Dr. Atkins!

Summary: Extreme low carb not for everyone
Review: I did Adkins for 6 weeks and felt horrible the whole time. Yes, I lost weight - about 16 lbs. but 6 of those pounds were muscle loss and a few more pounds were water. I also felt very dehydrated even though I drank more than the recommended amount. I've tried other low-carb diets and Sugarbusters was the one I like the best, it allows for more carbs and was able to stay in ketosis. Adkins is ultra low carb - and that works for some people but it is not for everyone, and definately not for me. Just my 2 cents!

Summary: Let's dispel some misconceptions....
Review: As a health practitioner and a patient of Dr. Atkins' since 1974, I've been aware of the controversy surrounding Dr. Atkins for a long time. I was a 12-year-old with a 350 cholesterol, who was well on his way to being a 14 or 15-year-old dead from a heart attack. Dr. Atkins put me on that oh-so-maligned diet of his, and in three months of no-sugar/no-carbs, high-fat/high-protein, my cholesterol dropped from 350 to 210. I've yet, in all the years since, to see another diet, or a drug for that matter, that can claim the same results. I've also never seen someone who has helped so many people go through such a sustained assault from the medical mainstream and the media. This extraordinary book not only updates the work he's been doing for the past 30 years; it cites extensive research that backs up his positions. (One of the ongoing attacks, for years, was that he based his conclusions solely on his 35,000 + patients, and never cited actual clinical studies.)

One of the most compelling parts of the book is the section on heart health/cholesterol--one of the topics for which he has consistently taken the most heat. He shows dramatically how much of the mainstream theory is being disproven by more and more studies: fat is not the enemy; sugar and high carbs (especially refined carbs) are more dangerous by far.

The other major gripe I have with the reception of this book is the assumption that the extreme low-carb approach is what Dr. Atkins advocates for everybody. Read more carefully, folks: that's the WEIGHT LOSS program. Once your weight is where you want it, you begin to eat more whole grain complex carbs and fruit (brown rice, millet, and the like, as opposed to refined carbs such as pastas and breads, and concentrated sugars such as fruit juices, honey, etc.) to halt the weight loss process. The book explains this very clearly.

One of the other consistent things I hear is the danger of consuming so much animal products given the horrible amounts of toxic chemicals pumped into commercially raised livestock (growth hormones, antibiotics, etc.) Again, read more carefully: at least 15 years ago, Dr. Atkins was among the first voices in this country to advocate ORGANIC meat and poultry--back when such a thing was largely unheard of. Yes, it's a bit more expensive, and in some areas harder to find; but isn't your health worth it?

Will Dr. Atkins ever advise you to eat a pint of Ben and Jerry's once a week? Not likely. But the powers that be have put on their blinders, and cite only the parts of Atkins' philosophy that suit their own intransigent purposes. Meanwhile a week doesn't go by when several clients come through my door and tell me, unsolicited, how since they've come off the high-carb/low-fat approach and incorporated more protein into their diets, they're feeling like human beings again for the first time in years.... more energy, greater mental clarity, better emotional stability/less depression, and long-term aches and pains beginning to disappear. Think for yourselves; experiment, and listen to your own bodies!

Read this book with an open heart and learn.

Summary: Dr Atkins' New Diet Revolution
Review: I have read Dr. Adkins New Diet Revolution book and have followed his advice and started the diet. I am in my 8th week and have lost 20 lbs so far. I plan to stay on it for as long as need be. (This could be forever! The diet is easy to stay on with no ill effects. It works for me. However, I wish they did not have so much negative press from so many. It seems they have something against you Dr. Adkins. Old or new the diet works on is safe as for as I'm concerned.

Summary: Didn't Work For Me & Fiance
Review: My fiance and I both tried the Atkins diet. She lasted 1.5 days. I lasted 2.5 days. Why? It made us downright SICK. She became weak and had severe nasea, dry heaves, you name it. She ate a bowl of pasta and within 1 hour was full of energy and felt fine. I went another day until I came down with the strangest case of fatigue I had ever felt - not tired like I had to sleep - just downright drained. I felt like what near death must feel like. I promptly ate some carbs and was back to normal in 2 hours. On the "positive" side I did lose some weight and I can say that it demonstrated the power that carb consumption has on the way we feel. We have both switched to the carbohydrates addict diet - which seems more reasonable - and we both feel better now that we are limiting our carb consumption. My opinion is that there is some grains of truth in Atkin's crusade against carbs. But the bottom line for me is that Atkin's book reads like an infomercial at best and the ravings of a lunatic at worst. The mainstream medical establishment has only bad things to say about atkins - Atkins might be to nutrition what Galileo was to astronomy, but he could just as easily be nothing more than a modern day snake oil salesman. I'm not a doctor and neither are most of the people on this diet. So if you want to believe Atkins and eat pounds of bacon and gallons of cream all I can say is caveat emptor.
