Summary: The book- Not the Diet
Review: I will comment only on the writings of the book-- not on the diet itself! It is simply written. Easily understood. It is not written in the manner that has you feeling the author is superior to yourself. The first one third of the book is rambling-on to me. Not clear, consience as I'd prefer. Most of the contents is spent on the author debuffing those who tend to be a critic of his "studies". Too much emphasis is put on "case studies" or on one of "his patients" (which may or may not be fictious!). Any point, that one is trying to make, can make sense to someone else with the right wording. I'd like to see more of a Daily Diet Plan laid out. He tells you what not to eat, not as much as what you should be eating. It just would be nicer to see a "typical" day's food intake, broken down into breafast, lunch, dinner, snack. It would be great in aiding one's plan. Things are scattered around throughout the book. You have to jump ahead and read chapter 18 to understand what's being discussed in chapter 4 (Just examples). Maybe he's trying to keep you from getting "lost" by not having all the big-worded hard facts all in one area. Maybe he feels learning about Ketosis/Lipolysis or about Triglycercide Levels in "spurts" whether than all at once is better comprehended. Also Out-and-out pushing of his other books and food products are scatterred throughout each chapter. He should just have an order form (for his other products) in the back of the book so that if it's wanted than it's there. Recommending the diet, pro or con, is not on my agenga. I'm only writing comments on the book itself. I only hope that thngs go as smoothly as he says it should. I'd hate to find out next year that I've wasted 12 months and am in worst condition than I am now.

Summary: 20 years later, and he's still right!
Review: I've had a weight problem for most of my adult life. 20 years ago, I read Dr. Atkins' first book, and tried his diet. It worked like a charm--everything he said was true. I experienced no hunger, lost weight quickly, and felt good. But, I was very young, and got scared off by the prevailing 'nutrition authorities.' I forgot about Dr. Atkins' diet for 20 years, all the while battling my weight unsuccessfully with first one diet, then another. When I learned Dr. Atkins had revised his book, I bought a copy. Three weeks later, I'm more than 15 pounds lighter, and have been eating fabulous meals. I used to suffer headaches, joint pains, and depression, but as Dr. Atkins predicts in his book, those symptoms disappeared once I gave up carbohydrates. I feel better and have more energy than I have in years.

Dr. Atkins presents a number of case histories, covers his reasearch, discusses nutritional supplements, and provides a nice section of recipes in this book.

Summary: Back to Atkins
Review: I bought this book almost exactly a year ago and read it cover to cover before starting the diet. I found it very interesting and easy to follow. I am not a big red meat eater as most red meat makes me nauseous, so I stick to chicken and turkey. My cravings for carbs stopped on about the 3rd day of induction, the 4th I was so weak I couldn't stand. I accepted this though, as I had put my body through such a drastic change. I lost 15 pounds in 14 days and went on to lose 15 more. In June of 1998 I went of the diet and now most of the weight has come back, just like Dr. Atkin's says in the book. I plan on re-reading my diet "bible" and starting over. This time I'm a believer and will try my best not to stray. I think anyone who is thinking about buying this book should, and at least try it. Hey, it might be the diet you need, it might not. But at least you tried!

Summary: Great Way to start Your New Year!
Review: I've been doing Atkins for over a year and a half. I never felt or looked better! My nails are strong, my hair is fuller, my skin looks great. I am skinny & I never have to go hungry! I am much healthier since I started eating more protein & fat. I deeply regret falling for the low fat, vegetarian sermon because I look & feel SO MUCH Better eating all kinds of delicious meats & healthy fats. Now I know why. You need fat & cholesterol to make important hormones that rebuild you body & keep your immune system strong. Also, when you eat cholesterol your body does not overproduce to the bad kind like it does when you eat high carbs. My awful sinus headaches are in the past, so is my gas pain. Even though some of you think you are doing it correctly, I've noticed the criticisms indicate that you did NOT thoroughly read the book. You are NOT supposed to gorge on fat, you would know that if you Really read it. No wonder you have an oily taste. I am so thrilled to start the year 2000 thin & knowing I am in CONTROL, not having to fight cravings and worrying about my weight. I don't have to starve myself or exercise for hours a day to be thin, like I used to. Learning about this way of eating is one of the best things that ever happened to me. The only negative is that you may look so good you might make your friends & relatives jealous!:) Happy New Year everyone!

Summary: Dr. Atkins Diet Revolution
Review: I followed the diet to the letter and lost 15 pounds during a five-month period. However, I had to get off the diet when my cholesterol went from 186 to 274. I later had to have my gall bladder removed after several severe attacks which were, according to my doctor, the result of my diet. Unfortunately all the weight came back after I went off the diet. The book was extermely helpful but I guess my body was an exception they did not mention.

Summary: Glad I found this book
Review: There's not much doubt that this diet does work. My only problem with it is an ethical one -- I feel guilty eating all this meat when so many people in the world can't afford any. In one week this diet cured a yeast infection that I'd had for years, got rid of the tired, muggy-headed feeling that I'd actually come to think of as normal, and eliminated my cravings for foods that I knew weren't good for me but couldn't stay away from. And I've lost some weight!

On the negative side, Dr. Atkins doesn't write in a very professional way--there's lots of hype and he puts down anybody who doesn't agree with him. His logic and conclusions are sometimes faulty and I tend to question his impartiality since he's big into promoting his own products.

But overall I do recommend his diet--and this book as a way to it.

Summary: Lost The Weight!
Review: Lost 16 Pounds in 14 days, I feel fabulous and look great! I suggest this book to anyone who finds it hard to stick to all those other fad diets. This is the real thing! I was recently ill (NO the illness was not related to the Dr. Atkins diet, I had back surgery) and had left the Atkins plan, I've regained the weight, but I'm back on track and loosing again! I'm also willing to exchange email with anyone who needs help or just wants some moral support. This is the Best plan yet, try it and see!

Summary: I lost 18 lbs in two months.
Review: The Atkins program is the easiest thing I've ever done. I eat lots of beef jerky for snacks and I love being able to barbeque every day and still loose weight. My question is, I love Chinese food and I was wondering if for example Mongolian Beef w/o rice is good for the program? Please e-mail me at edhaith@yahoo.com for suggestions on some of your favorite foods to eat on the program.

Summary: Dr. Atkin's Book
Review: I bought this book and found the content to be very informative. I had never known the relationship between carbohydrates, insulin levels and the ability to burn fat. I was reassured by the research done in the area (and there are a plethora of medical articles in the back from which the "science" behind it is all taken) and encouraged by the reports on the results. The book is mostly about why you would even consider a diet that is so against what the popular dieting dogma of today is all about. It clearly explains the links between carbohydrates to a host of health problems, including obesity and also explains how a low carb diet, complete with fat (that we have all been told is taboo) is actually, in some/many cases beneficial. The book very clearly lays out the guidelines for getting started (including a recommendation for pre-diet bloodwork for physical proof that your cholesterol, etc. will be lowered) and contains listings of appropriate foods as well as foods you must not eat. (This diet is based on chemistry, in the beginning even one little bite of the wrong stuff can set you back). It also contains recipes in the back for the different phases of the diet (the beginning is much more restrictive than what you will be eating later). This is a diet where it is qualitative, not quantitative...so you never have to feel hungry and often actually feel satiated on less. After reading (where sometimes i do have to say Mr. Atkins sounds a bit full of unecessary hype), and doing research of my own as to the safety of the diet, I decided to give it a try (I have about 40 pounds to lose, which actually is on the lower spectrum of most Atkin's patients..the diet is very successful for LARGE weight losses). Alas, I could not stay on it for more than 5 days. The food allowed made me feel constantly ill and left an icky feeling in my mouth. It left me dreading having to eat because I simply do not tolerate such high levels of protien and fat. After feeling sick to my stomach (as I did when I was pregnant!) and wanting to throw up each time I ate, I decided the diet did not fit well with me. I am only overweight due to previous pregnancies, and have never had trouble losing just cutting out a couple of "treats" combined with exercise so I will just go back to that. I will however, be going back with a new found knowledge of carbohydrates and plan to cut back my intake though not as drastically on the Atkin's diet. I highly recommend this book at least because of the science behind it and how it could be so beneficial to those who can tolerate the food and who have much more to lose by being obese than I do (at 170 lbs I do not appear to be "fat"). It is certainly an interesting read.
