Rating: Summary: DEVELOPED HEART DISEASE! Review: I thought all these protein books were super until I got my annual exam and had my cholesterol level checked. It turned out it had become sky high and that I had made my heart disease worse! THIS BOOK IS NOT HEALTHY! Don't buy it. It's not worth risking your life for this scam book. The so-called "doctor" should be ashamed of himself. My personal doctor suggested a book by Gary Rempe and it worked really well and actually improved my health a lot in the process. Don't waste your money and your life on this book by Atkins.
Rating: Summary: To the point and easy to understand Review: The diet didn't work for me, but a co-worker of mine has had stupendous results. Atkin's book is easy to read and he presents medical terminology and concepts in a manner that is easy to understand regardless of your knowledge of science or biology. Many of the concepts just make sense, especially for someone like me that comes from a family with a high incedence of diabetes and low blood sugar. Atkins cites many medical reports and findings in his book, but I was dismayed when I recently saw him on C-SPAN being interviewed with other prominent doctors. The doctors were asking him to cite evidence that his diet works as well as he claims and he said, "We don't have any scientific proof yet, but we hope to have some soon." What! His book clearly states that he has documented proof over the 25 years he's been running his center. Although the book is quick, easy reading, it's a bit much to read Atkin's constant self references to his superiority to other doctors and "wrong" opinions. I still gave the book 3 stars due to it's straight-forward approach to what makes us addicted to carbohydrates and how to avoid them. Atkins clearly states that while the diet works for most, it won't work for all, but it's hard to know for sure since he recently stated on television that he doesn't have scientific proof that it works at all.
Rating: Summary: Read it, then read it again Review: I am simply astounded by the number of people who blatantly mis-state and/or completely ignore the concepts and methods presented in this book. My advice: After purchasing the book, the intention is that you actually READ it rather than using it for a doorstop. I just read a statement that Dr. Atkins claims vegetables and fruit are bad for your health. That is simply not true, and this is only one example of someone who either has very poor reading comprehension or has blamed the author for their own failure to follow the diet. It's working extremely well for me. In 18 years of attempts, I have never been successful on a low-fat diet unless I starved myself. This invariably lead to a complete obsession with food. I remember weeks of consuming 1,000 calories a day of only carbs and protein and working out strenuously two to three hours a day, every day. My reward at the end of every week was the loss of maybe one-half a pound, if I was lucky. And we all know that one-half a pound is so little that it could easily consist entirely of water. There was no way I could maintain that kind of lifestyle, and I'd gain back the little I had lost with interest. With the Atkins diet, I am never, ever hungry and I no longer even think about eating. Now that I know what takes place in my body when I consume carbs, especially refined sugar, I am so turned off that I don't even want to see a donut, let alone eat one. I'm losing fat and I feel fantastic. My carb cravings are completely gone. Read the book, make a commitment to follow the diet exactly, then read the book again. It is not a prison; it can be customized once you reach your goal. Like any weight loss program, you just don't get something for nothing. ...
Rating: Summary: The King from Fishers Review: I have tried to lose weight for years. Yes, I tried the lowfat diets. Always checking every label to note the actual fatcontent. The grams, not the percent which is very deceiving. When Olestra came out, I thought, "now I can eat potato chips". Wrong. So at 192 pounds (I'm 5'9") I decided to try the Atkins diet. I was excited as usual because there were alot of things in the diet that I enjoy eating. However, the results were OK at best. When I went to the doctor for a physical, I had a moderate weight loss and he said it was alright to continue the diet. I also read that a little wine is actually good for the heart. So I was drinking a "little" wine every day. Probably 3 or 4 glasses. I decided to give the Atkins one more chance, but this time, without the wine. BINGO! I am now down to 167 and shooting for 155. The wine must have put me over the carb limit. Good luck with your version of the Atkins. END
Rating: Summary: The main comment Review: It appears that the main comment regarding the Atkins Diet (when you go back to old eating habits) is you gain the weight back. DUH! You also gain the weight back on EVERY diet when you go back to your old eating habits. I am pre-diabetic and this eating regime is faboulous! I lost 30 lbs and when a pound or two creep back on due to poor eating habits (I am human) I go back to less carbos and I feel better right away.
Rating: Summary: Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution Review: This was the best research I've read in 25 years! My husband and I lost a total of 150 lbs. on it 25 years ago, but went back to regular eating and gained it back. This time I read it cover-to-cover twice and am using the lifetime approach and it is so easy and so great. Lost 67 pounds easily while eating great and feeling great. Maintenance is a piece of cake (low carb, of course). Found a DRD in our adopted daughter which changes her personality completely!
Rating: Summary: It works Review: I read this book 5 months and 70 extra pounds ago. I say "fooey" to the AMA and the government's USDA who persist in condemning Dr. Atkins. (The AMA and the government's FDA are the same folks who told me phen/fen was good for me. HA!) Dr. Atkins is a cardiologist and discovered this plan 30 years ago. Dietary fat is not the same as, and does not equal, body fat. Contrary to the criticisms, this is NOT a NO carbs diet - one is allowed up to 20 carbs per day in the initial 2 week "induction" phase of this "way of eating." (It's not a "flash in the pan" diet - it's a life-long "way of eating.") Carbs can then gradually be adjusted upward. Don't do the "low carb thing" without first reading this book and keeping it handy for reference. I also suggest getting a carbohydrate calorie counter reference - such as Allan Borushek's nifty little "The Doctor's Pocket Calorie, Fat, And Carbohydrate Counter."
Rating: Summary: I'll never try another diet Review: My experience with this diet was great. I lost 20 pounds FAST (and I was not that heavy). I did regain a few pounds (3-4) of water weight right after going off the induction diet, but that's to be expected since I didn't follow the ongoing weight loss diet (we want to start a family so being in ketosis is a no-no). I have since re-lost the 3-4 pounds simply by avoiding sugar and white flour. Yes, I did feel rotten the first 2-3 days. SO WHAT! Honestly, if you can't take that much discomfort no wonder you're fat! Start the diet on a Friday or Saturday and expect to feel under the weather for the weekend. Also - take the fish oil supplements at night to avoid nausea. They'll make you sick regardless of your diet.
Rating: Summary: COLOR ME SKINNY! Review: ... This diet is awesome. BUTTT, you do have to followinstructions & watch out for all those hidden carbohydrates thefood processors sneak in their products. The critics are just looking for any excuse to give up because sugar is so addicting. That is why you may feel lousy at first because you are going through withdrawal just like with any drug....Also, many people need potassium if they are losing weight too quickly. And to the other geniuses: Gee whiz, OFCOURSE you will gain it all back if you go back to eating the way that made you fat! DUH! Every time I read the reviews I can tell who really reads the book & who just did a half a**ed attempt. The negative reviewers always leave clues that they didn't follow directions. Do it right & you will get the results you are looking for!
Rating: Summary: good promises but not for everyone... Review: I went into this diet with some great expectations..."wow, eat as much as you want and lose weight?" Of course, these expectations are false. i just wanted to lose a few pounds, and it seems that the diet only works if you're hyper obese. I lost 5 pounds, but it wasn't worth the struggle...it's nearly impossible not to eat carbohydrates. The book makes it sound like you can eat whatever you want and there's a great variety, but you can really only eat meat, some vegetables, and jello. I wouldn't call this a great "variety". I wish I could find a more realistic diet plan. Also, you feel very exhausted while on the diet because you're not getting enough nutrients. Supplements just don't do it. I would suggest this diet only for people who really need to take weight off for health reasons...other than that, it's just a whole lot of trouble for something that's not really worth it.
