Rating: Summary: Why Follow Dr. Fatkins? The Dead & Obese Weight Loss Guru Review: Why model yourself after failure? Dr. Atkins is dead. At only 72. And he suffered clinical death from cardiac arrest a year before he died. Autopsy showed he had suffered a heart attack, congestive heart failure and hypertension. As if this wasn't bad enough, Dr. Atkins was morbidly obese at his death! 258 pounds!!Why model yourself after a diet guru who was fat, fat, fat? 258 pounds at the time of his death! And why risk the same "side effects" as Dr. Atkins got -- heart attack and hypertension? Not to mention the other side effect. Which can destroy your social life. Horrible bad breath! Why not model yourself after a guru who has really stayed slim? The secret of success is to model yourself after success. After the Atkins diet failed me miserably, a very successful friend introduced me to The Elixxir Program. The Elixxir Program is based on the only scientific way to achieve dramatic weight loss. And keep it off for life. And the guru Elixxir is his own best testimonial and proof that The Elixxir Program works. Ever wondered why all the Orthodox Jews, Moslems, Hindus and Buddhists can stay on such "impossible" religious diets? Is it because they're stronger than you and me? No, it's because they have a philosophy/worldview and lifestyle which SUPPORTS their diets. And this is why The Elixxir Program works. And why Atkins diet and all the other diets do not. The Elixxir Program comes with an exciting philosophy and lifestyle which will empower you to lose weight and keep them off. It is in this book The ImmorTalist Manifesto on Amazon. Read The ImmorTalist Manifesto! And then run to the elixxir.com website and find out about the Executive Memo telling you all about The Elixxir Program. If anything can make you slim for life, The Elixxir Program can. I should know. I had a "love handle" or "beer belly" around my waist that I couldn't get rid of no matter what. Until I got on The Elixxir Program. It's a miracle. Actually, totally scientific. The only diet program that is documented with an overhwhelming body of scientific research and articles. Why follow a weight loss guru who was fat? Why not follow a weight loss guru who is as fabulously slim and healthy as you want to be? Elixxir is your man! Not Dr. Fatkins.;) Bonus: Unlike Atkins regimen which speeds up your aging, The Elixxir Program is also the only scientific anti-aging eating program! So "kill two birds with one stone," lose weight and stay young!
Rating: Summary: Carb-Free Snake-Oil Review: The latest in a long, unbroken string of attempts to help people who eat too much avoid actually moving to lose weight. At this point, it's become much like arguing that the sky is blue. Diet book after diet book gets wheeled out to a public eager to shell out cash to avoid the one the one and only cure to losing weight: getting off your duff. Day after day, I watch people order dripping cheeseburgers slathered in cheese sans the bun as a way to lose weight. Now seriously, folks, let's use a little common sense here. Just because some snake-oil salesman wrote a book on a foolish concept doesn't obligate you to read it. By the way, I strongly advocate the consumption of cheeseburgers, milkshakes, etc., I just can't imagine anyone thinking that "carbs" are the enemy. There's really nothing on earth wrong with being fat. I'm getting there myself and wouldn't dream of jogging, paddling, pulling or lifting anything to lose my ever-widening girth.....nor am I going to dole out cash to some hack who has half of the world on a diet while everyone just gets keeps getting fatter. If you're one of those perpetually dissatisfied souls who will just never quit thrashing themselves no matter what, I'm going to sacrifice the millions in royalties right here and now by offering you the full prism of weight loss options that work. Cut and paste this to a Word document, pin it on your refrigerator or in your cubicle at work. Weight Loss System: 1. Get off your lazy ass and move around until you sweat alot. Repeat. The End. Personally, if you're on this page reading this review, you're already moving (albeit slowly...heh) in the wrong direction. You've been sold a bill of goods. My advice is to shut off the computer, go to your local grocery, and get a pint of your favorite Ben & Jerry's and a movie. Eat lots of carb-rich bread. Kick back, let fools buy books that are destined to fail....let the driven little tyrants run and run until their fit hearts pop in a calorie-burning ecstasy. We may have billboards for rears, but life will have been much richer for our lack of really caring.
Rating: Summary: Guess who was clinically obese? Review: That's right, you heard me, Dr. Atkins upon his death was clinically declared obese. Is this really the guy you want to be taking advice from? Well not me! I currently just watch what I eat and how much of it. I'm currently a 17 yr. old weighing in at 129 pounds. How did I get to be this weight? Cardiovascular exercise and calory reduction. That's all it took! And no I'm not short, I'm currently 5"9 and very happy with the state of my body. I workout at home three times a day including a once a day trip to the YMCA. Trust me if you really want results you have to always be pushing yourself, not relying on an obese man's advice. There's a reason he was obese and had physical problems! I hope you come to realize this, while working hard and staying away from this book.
Rating: Summary: Very unhealthy and dangerous! Review: This is one of the worst, most dangerous diet fads I have come across in recent years. If you want to completely ruin your health, there is no better way than to do it with the Dr.Atkins approach. This book actually states, in all seriousness, that eating things like red meat, butter, bacon and cheese in abundance are GOOD for you. The reason, as Dr.Atkins states, is that carbohydrates stimulate insulin, which makes people burn energy less effectively and ultimately makes them fat. If this sounds ridiculous, it's because it is. Dr.Atkins ignores studies which show that beef and cheese cause a far bigger release of insulin than pasta. Fish also releases a bigger insulin amount than eating popcorn. Carbohydrates don't make people fat. A sedentary lifestyle makes people fat. For example, the majority of the Asian population eats a diet that is FAR more abundant in carbohydrates (rice, noodles, vegetables), yet Asians do not suffer from even nearly as much of an obesity problem as Americans do. Places like KFC, McDonald's, Burger King, etc are what makes people overweight. The Atkins Diet will make you lose weight, but it's not the way you want to lose weight. By eating less than 20g of carbohydrates a day, after about 2-3 days the body begins a process called ketosis. Since there is such a low amount of blood sugar in your body, your brain will start to burn fat in order to gain that energy. Therefore, you do lose weight on the Atkins diet. However, remember that the food you are eating is incredibly loaded with saturated fats, cholesterol, and complex proteins. All of these things contribute to long term problems, especially with the heart. Eating red meat and a lot of saturated fats is a leading cause of colorectal cancer in America. This book actually tries to convince you that fat and cholesterol have nothing to do with heart problems!!! Nothing that Atkins has stated has EVER been published in any major health or science magazine. He funds only bogus research that doesn't even use any modern sociological or scientific procedures (such as the Duke University study). Folks, here's the bottom line. I understand your plight. I used to be overweight, with no muscles, I ate poorly and I was in terrible shape. I realized that the best way to lose weight, and KEEP THE WEIGHT OFF, was to exercise on a regular basis, eat properly and nutritiously, and to get a lot of rest. I know how appealing these diet fads are. They promise you quick results with minimal effort, which is the first sign that they are completely bogus. Attaining a great body type takes MONTHS and even YEARS, and takes a lot of work, dedication, and PATIENCE. If you don't believe me, just talk to your doctor.
Rating: Summary: Lost 60 pounds slowly in 12 months. Review: I tried Low calorie but could not retain the weight lost. I am a classic yo yo dieter. I thought the Atkins diet was gross and insane but I was 35 desperate to lose the fat that low cal would not budge. I gave in suffered with headaches took my ibuprofen and fiber supplements and lost eight pounds in 2 weeks. My weight loss was slow because even Dr Atkins said go into the OWL stage if you dont want this to be another crash diet and bore easily. I had alot of lows and binging periods but by walking and doing pilates a year later I am 125 pounds down from 185. I am so glad I stuck with it and studied my Atkins books and picked myself up it really works and I eat normal now.Plus my family is trying it now because at first they were cynical and laughing at it but seeing my results and flat belly they are converts!!
Rating: Summary: Before criticizing, read the book Review: I am a nutrition major and naturally had my doubts about the Atkins diet. High in fat, eat as much as you want...that certainly does not sound like a healthy diet. But it is and if you read the book, you will see it is perfectly fine. If you are going to start a low-carb diet, be cautious. There are many people who say they are on Atkins, but have not even read the book! If you don't read the book, and just limit carbs, you aren't doing any good to your body. You have to follow the book. I am a previous loser on Weight Watchers and I gained it all back plus 30...WW was getting too confusing for me, I couldn't have a taste of something and not eat the portion I wanted. When I started Atkins I was suprised of how few craving for carbs I've been having. It is much easier going to restaurants knowing that you can either have something or you definitely can't have it. Atkins does not eliminate carbs, but it gets you into ketosis (fat burning) and gradually puts back more carbs while you are still in ketosis. And the people who say no diet is good if it requires you to take vitamins. Well, with any diet you may be losing nutrients and ALL people should take vitamins. That is a fact, take it from a nutrition major. Positives: It will work if you read the book. Negatives: The book is very inexpensive (compared to other weight loss programs) but meat products and the low carb products can be expensive.
Rating: Summary: the naysayers are NOT informed Review: First I want to say that the Atkins diet has SAVED ME. I was not morbidly obese, but I was overweight, and I have struggled with Hypoglycemia all of my 24 years. The reason I am writing this review is because I heard two comments over the weekend on the same day that amazed me. The first was from a doctor who I will NOT see again). He asked me what I was eating and I told him I have been on Atkins for about two years. The first thing out of his mouth was that it wa not healthy and did not provide me enough fiber. Excuse me.....I guess those two salads a day, veggies, AND fiber supplement aren't giving me enough fiber. Nor are the low carb breads I eat, I guess. (???) The second comment was from my father's best friend. My father and his friend went on Atkins a few years ago, for about a month. They quickly went back to their old eating habits, and I didn't know why. Over the weekend when he made his comment to me, I found out. He said that he had gone to the hospital because he "went on Atkins and cut out all fiber". (isn't fiber one of the most important things about Atkins? it is carb-free and keeps you healthy.) Apparently his wife had "printed a bunch of stuff off of the internet" and my dad and his friend were eating bacon and eggs and cheese every day and calling it Atkins. He doesn't know I am on Atkins, and I didn't feel like an argument. He is an ignorant person anyway, and I don't care......Anyway, this book is a Godsend. It is well-written, and takes you through all phases of Atkins. In the back are enough recipes to get you started cooking (and I recommend cooking. You might even make your own recipes). Some of the editions even come with a $1 off coupon for any Atkins product. Mine even came with a tear-out carb counter card to take with me anywhere. This diet IS healthy. After your move through the phases and add carbs in you will see that it is truly the diet nature intended. Anyone who tells you that Atkins is high fat, low fiber, and dangerous probably had someone close to them go on their own version of the diet like my father and his friend.
Rating: Summary: It Really Works Review: I am an athletic 25 year old male. So what am I doing on a "diet?" I had surgery in December 2003 which kept me out of the gym for about a month and drugged up on pain killers for three weeks, which, combined with the usual holiday season increase in eating, left me with an extra 10 pounds and feeling depressed. I found myself pigging out on all kinds of high carb junk...pizza, lots of chocolate, nutella on white bread, etc. I tried to stop but I couldn't. After eating extremely well and being in fantastic shape for years, I found myself getting fat. When I decided to give Atkins a shot, I was about 20 pounds too heavy. I followed phase I for three weeks and lost it ALL. After that I went straight to phase IV. After following the Atkins approach for about 2 months now, I have noticed the following: I am never hungry. The meals I now eat are completely filling. I am STRONGER when I lift weights. I run further and faster. I feel better and I have more energy. I eat more vegetables now than at any other point in my life. I more or less never eat any type of grain product. I eat about 1 fruit per day. I consume more fiber and omega-3's than at any other point in my life. I am, without question, consuming more healthy foods than prior to Atkins. I plan to eat like this for the rest of my life. This book costs very little. Even if you are doubtful, consider reading it. Atkins makes a very convincing (and well supported) argument in favor of his diet. Good luck to you all.
Rating: Summary: A stop-gap solution, but for the long term? Review: If you have an urgent need, this may work like a short-term fix, much like a medical drug. However, I'm uncomfortable doing this for the long term. Many find this method draconian, and not the most easy to do, and the results and benefits still questionable by the experts, who remain divided. Go back to basics, look at alternatives like "This Body This Life" from Asia, which seems like a down-to-earth, honest and practical approach for the long haul. No short cuts, but it works.
Rating: Summary: For The Weak-Minded Review: This seems to be a quick solution for fast weight loss. It isn't. The reason you are losing weight is simply because you are cutting down on food intake. The real solution to good health and weight maintenance is exercise and eating healthily. For crying out loud do not cut down on vegetables and fruit. I agree processed bread and sugar are bad for you, but that is because of the chemical processes. If you want to eat all the meat and eggs you want, as according to this diet, that is fine, but haven't you ever heard of clogged arteries? Fat intake this extreme is very bad for your heart in the long run. Quit looking for a quick way out and get off your lazy behind and exercise.
