Rating: Summary: Very popular book! Review: Everyone is reading this book. No book will cure all the problems with diabetes, obesity, etc. However, the approach here is scientifically sound. If millions of them used the Atkins way and worked, then there is merit to the system. My question is, how can a person, who is under weight but with high triglycerides, benefit from this book?
Rating: Summary: Absolutely Wonderful Review: I'm the type of person that has to follow things to the letter. I bought this book and read the whole thing before starting my diet. I followed the program exactly as I was told. My results were -16 pounds in two weeks. I could not believe that I was actually succeeding in this diet. I didn't go past those two weeks, though because the hardest part of this diet is the first five days, and after that, it's fairly easy. There were two things required in the diet that I simply could not provide any longer, that was money (it was costing me at least 50 dollars a week in groceries alone, and that's a lot for me because I'm only 17 and working part time), and it needed time. I spent at least 2-3 hours a day cooking the meals I had to eat, and that is just too much time for me because I was in school and working. A lot of people say that this diet doesn't work. They are saying this because they are doing one of two things: 1) They aren't following the diet the way it is laid out in the book. The book tells you right from the beginning that it has to be followed exactly, there can not be any "Just one small taste"-s to it. They also think that just because it is a carb controlled diet that it means that they can have ANY type of carbs, so long as it's under the daily limit. This isn't true either. There are four phases to the diet, and each phase you gradually start to eat certain carbs again. I plan to only stay on the first phase, Induction because it's the phase where you lose the most weight. In Induction, you are ONLY suppose to be getting your carbs from LEAFY GREEN VEGETABLES. No matter how many times I try to tell this to people, they still think that it's okay to have a small bag of chips or a prepackaged bagle because the carb count is low. 2) They lose the weight they want and then go off the diet just to be discouraged to gain the weight back. That's with any diet, it's just common sense. People tend to think that because this diet makes you lose weight fast that it's magical and you will keep the weight off if you go off the diet. NOT TRUE. Even if you exercise non stop, if you don't continue with the diet, you will gain the weight back. I read this book and followed the program exactly. Others have too. A lot of people do the diet that they want to do, and interperate the words loosely and then get angry when they see no results. Wake up and smell the protein, One-Star-Raters.
Rating: Summary: A 30 year old fad???? Review: I have to chckle when I read reviews like the individual that referred to the Atkins diet as nothing more than a fad. If it is a fad, it's the longest running fad that I have ever heard of now running for over 30 years. Also this program when followed correctly will not make you feel weak. You should feel a surge of energy as your body burns up stored fat for energy.Lastly, any weight gain will be muscle, not fat. Forget the scale, take your measurements, take a few photo's and check yourself in the mirror and how your clothes feel. Atkins is the best diet ever, when used as instructed.
Rating: Summary: Feelin' mighty good! Review: So the diet works for some/not for others! Any surprise? Thank God there are people always putting new information forward. For me, and I stress for me, this is not a diet but a new way of eating! ATKINS IS WORKING, for me! I have tried every diet plan/vitamin program that has come down the pike. Low fat plans that left me hungery and eating food that resembled cardboard at best. I used recommended vitamins that are supposed to curb my appetite and help me lose weight. [...] This eating plan is simple, creative and healthy! Bored by "too much of the same foods"???? Try getting a Low Carb cookbook here. Losing momentum? Try going to the many low carb chat rooms online and get remotivated daily! But for Pete's sake, find something that works for you! My energy level has gone through the roof. And even though the needle on my scale hasn't moved a great deal, my clothes sure look & fit better and I have a spring in my step! I even got my husband on it. He was only about 10 pounds or so overweight, but his "center of gravity" had shifted. In just a couple of weeks he lost his "spare tire" and feels like he can keep with this plan! I don't crave the carbs like I did and no longer feel possessed by the "Sugar Devil"! I wish everyone success in your "health" journies! Bless you Dr. A!
Rating: Summary: nothing more than a fad Review: i tried this diet a few years ago and not only did it make me considerably fatter, but i felt very unhealthy. it made me feel as though all the aerobic exercise i was getting wasn't working anymore. i got winded walking up stairs and was constantly tired, vapid, and sluggish. i figured a diet which praises high protien intake can only be good for my weight training regimen, but i only felt weaker on this diet. and i made sure i followed it perfectly. something doesn't seem right about fad diets that de-emphasize healthy exercise and tell you to completely exclude certain foods or whole food groups.
Rating: Summary: This book is bloated Review: The diet has been an effective weight loss tool for my husband and I. However, Atkins constantly damages his own credibility with commentary about allergies, Nutrasweet, and other health issues that he seems unqualified to discuss. Skip those parts. Instead, try the induction diet and work out a "maintenance" plan for yourself involving less sugar and less refined grains.
Rating: Summary: Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution Review: I am a 43 year old Diabetic. I was trying to go back to College after having a Dr tell me that if I didn't change my life that I would be dead. At spring break I was in serious grade troubles, I couldn't remember anything. My mid term grades were 1-A (in speech, because I could read notes) 1-D and 3-F's any class that required memorization was a total loss. I was on Actos in the morning and Amaryl in the evening for the Diabetes and Lipitor for high cholesterol and Lotensin for High Blood Pressure. I was also on antibiotics trying to control Epididymitis. My weight had just been soaring until I reached 314 and I said no more. I have an uncle and brother- inlaw who had done Atkins and had lost weight, so I bought the book and my wife and I started Atkins at Spring Break. I decided that I was going to put ALL of the drugs on the shelf and just follow the book. My Dr had an absolute fit but we reached a middle ground of 5 blood Checks a day recorded on an excel spread sheet with checkups every 2 weeks. The results were astonishing I lost 29 pounds in the first 2 weeks, Blood pressure went down to 138 over 74 and the High Colesterol and Triglycerides are better than they were on medication. The Dr is astounded but now very supportive. The Blood Sugars are all in the normal range of 80-120, if I am watching what I eat by the glycemic index. The weight loss is now slower but still coming off. This is all good but the best part is how I feel. I haven't felt this good in years and my menory has returned. This last week was finals and my grades are now a 3.0. Dr Atkins may be a Quack but he sure changed my life. I in no way encourage anyone to do what I did with out a drs supervision. Dr Atkins saved my life.
Rating: Summary: The last diet you will ever need. Review: There will be many that take exception and even umbrage to that statement, yet the fact remains; Adkins for life! About a month ago I met an elderly man while working out at the gym and he and I were discussing diet and nutrition. He was sharing that while on a diet that excluded "everything white" (i.e. those evil carbs) he was able to lose 50 lbs. in 9 weeks. Granted a key component in this diet, as in others, is daily excercise, for without excercise, no man or woman shall see weight loss. I call this gentleman's approach "Adkins Light." I started my own Adkins Light the next day and the results were remarkable. So much so that I decided to check into the "full Adkins" approach. This diet, as is the case with all others, should be approached carefully and deliberately and in consultation with your doctor. Also, one would need to carefully read the first 5 or 6 chapters and understand the philosophy and the science behind the Adkins diet for in understanding the method behind what the medical establishment terms as "maddness" this will increase your liklihood for success. As humans, we seem to do better when we understand why we are doing what we are doing! At any rate, I have been talking up the Adkins plan where I work as several of my co-workers have inquired about my noticible weight loss. This diet is worth trying because it produces results. But remember, you have to excercise!
Rating: Summary: Hey! I'm on Atkins too! Review: After witnessing family, friends and co-workers lose weight by "doing Atkins", I decided to get the book and give it a try. I am not a big meat eater by nature. For a time, I was even a vegatarian, but nonetheless, I am willing to try anything new to see how it effects me. After reading and following the advice in the book for about 10 days now, I can report that I have lost only a few pounds so far (I only need to lose about 15). Mostly, I notice that my clothes fit better, I have more energy and I never experience those "blood sugar ups and downs" that I used to have everyday.. If you are overweight or just curious about alternative nutritional methods, goive this one a try. The book is easy to read. I learned a lot about how the digestive system works and how blood sugar is regulated in the body. In my opinion, it was worth the price just for that understanding alone.
Rating: Summary: Not a healthy way to go Review: I read this book because my "significant other" decided he wanted to try it. People are always looking for the easy way out. People want to eat what they want, not exercise but still be slim. Well, Atkins can only work for so long. Stop to think about it for a minute, eating all the meat you want.. that is not healthy. Sure you'll lose weight on Atkins but what are you giving up in exchange for a few pounds? The consumption of animal products has been conclusively linked with heart disease, cancer, diabetes, arthritis, and osteoporosis. Cholesterol (found only in animal products) and animal fat clog arteries, leading to heart attacks and strokes. The rate of colon cancer is highest in regions where meat consumption is high and lowest where meat-eating is uncommon. A similar pattern is evident for breast, cervical, uterine, ovarian, prostate, and lung cancers.
