Summary: Been there, done that.
Review: I lost 45lbs after 6 months and then gained 60 after being off of it only 6 months. I also had many other doctors suggest to me that as a healthy woman it would not be good for my kidneys, heart, and liver. Of course I stuck to it and if any person sticks to a diet they are going to do well. I think that it is a dangerous diet and people should be aware of that fact. I can no longer eat meat since that diet, the very smell makes me nauseous. There is no miracle in the diet world. It is us dieters that make it work not the doctors. Any diet will work if you work it. My brother-in-law lost 60 pounds by just eating baked potatoes and never ate an ounce of meat. We will all keep struggling until we learn to stop overeating, especially myself. And Dr. Atkins will keep on selling vitamins and books. What he does best.

Summary: I not only lost weight, but my cholesterol improved.
Review: When my doctor told me that "everyone with my cholesterol ratio has a heart attack and half will make the hospital," I became worried and started taking cholesterol medicine. When I heard about this diet, I decided to try it and I took myself off the medicine. My ratio went from 7.1 to 4.8 and I lost 15 pounds. That was two years ago. I have never taken the medicine again. My total cholesterol went from 219 to 168 and the ratio remains the same. I love this diet.

Summary: The absolute best "lifestyle change" I ever made!
Review: Got the book and within three days was feeling better and more energetic than I had in a long time. Changing to the low carbo way of eating completely did away with my mid-afternoon sluggishness. I have been more alert and have lost a total of 12 pounds to date -- it's been about 3 1/2 weeks on the plan. It is great! The best thing is the no hunger part of it.

Summary: This book is a lifesaver
Review: Just have to ad my praises about this book. The low carb diet has truly been a lifesaver for me. I have lost 64 lbs in the last 10 months following this plan, and I have never felt better. I have more energy that I have had in 20 years. I feel like a kid again, and all my other vital signs are improving too, cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar. I have tried and failed on other diets many times over the last 25 years. This time I am succeeding. God bless Dr. Atkins

Summary: I lost 7 lbs, but my cholestrol skyrocketed to 343.
Review: I also experienced heart palpitations. I'm a 34 year old female, 5' 5", beginning weight 132, current weight 125. I lost only 7 lbs on this diet, but my cholestrol level is now at a life-threatening level.

Summary: Great new perspective on staying thin and healthy for life!
Review: 6 people in my office, including myself, have read this book and followed this "diet". We have lost an average of 33.3 lbs each in 12 weeks, and are still going strong. Moreover, my HDL ("good") cholesterol increased so much that my general practitioner asked me for the name of this book! I suffer from reactive hypoglycemia, which means that my body sends out too much insulin in response to carbohydrate intake. I have had no bad "sugar lows" when I was following the "diet" properly. Another lady in my office has serious heart and circulation problems, and was put on this diet by her cardiologist; she is now 30 lbs lighter and is off almost all of her medications!

Some people think Dr. Atkins is a quack, but I think that the results we've seen speak louder than his critics. I've seen "dyed in the wool" skeptics become converts.

Read the book and follow it to the letter! If he says to take vitamin & mineral supplements (particularly potassium, do it! If he tells you to drink a lot of water, do it! Buying the "ketostix" (found in any pharmacy) also helps a great deal both psychologically and physically, because you can track your progress. This is particularly helpful if you are exercising. You will be converting fat tissue into muscle tissue (7x heavier than fat), so you will not see results in how your clothes are fitting, but not on the scale. When you see the Ketostix turn color, however, you KNOW that you are burning off fat!

Summary: Only diet I have been able to stick to
Review: I am always hearing people say that any diet works if you stick to it. Considering that many scientists, not just Dr. Atkins, have come to consider overeating as analogous to a drug addiction, how much sense would it make for someone to say "this drug rehab program works as long as people don't use drugs"? I think that part of saying that a diet works is how likely people are to stick to it. If a treatment, whatever it is, has a very high drop-out rate, is it really any good? No, because it suggests that the side effects are too awful. This has been my experience with every other diet I have tried - I starved! I even felt depressed.
I gained about 30 lbs. during college and all along I tried to lose them (even as they piled up). I tried lean cuisine, slimfast, and all other sorts of low-fat diets and only gained weight, not to mention I couldn't stick to them because I craved food all day. Anyone who saw the movie "Supersize Me" will remember that the guy developed an addiction to McDonald's and also got depressed. I'm convinced this has more to do with the carbs than with the fat. I felt the same way on a low-fat diet.
Furthermore, I'm eating healthier than ever. All my calories are coming from foods rich in nutrients: meat, zucchini, eggplant, peppers, berries, nuts, etc. I have even developed a taste for some of these vegetables and even tofu. Three months ago (when I started the diet), I couldn't conceive of not eating rice or potatoes with every meal. Now I just see them as empty calories.
I have never eaten nor felt this great in my life. My food is delicious (even my fiance who is not technically on the diet loves it), and I no longer snack 10 times a day.
How much weight have I lost? About 10 lbs, meaning I have reached my healthy weight (I was very skinny when I started college). Most importantly, I lost this weight early on and have not put it back.

Summary: This book may help you get weight loss results...
Review: ...but as a health care proffesional I can tell you the only way it does so is by traumatising your body and making you ill!
It may be of some use to the extremely obese under medical supervision, but otherwise I believe it is dangerous and silly, even for those with severe weight problems I think it is dodgy.
My main objection is that not only does it fake illness symptoms to make you STARVE the weight off but all that fat it asks you to consume must be storing many problems for your future health, artery blockages, gall stones, liver problems, bowel problems and the list could go on.
It's misguided and dodgy to say the least, just like a million fad diets before it. The hard fact is you have to cut the fat, increase the fruit and vegatables and do some working out, it's the only safe way to lose weight and improve your health.
And to anyone who thinks it has no side effects the most immediate is the worse! It makes your breathe smell like you diet consists of dog do! Just dont do it!!

Summary: DIET TO DEATH
Review: This diet is completely useless. Follow this diet and you can follow robert. Where you might ask? To his death bed. I am usually pretty balanced and open minded but I have my limits. This book exceeded my limits...I am god damn angry I paid for this book. What a waste of my money...if I had kept my money and invested it...it would be worth 200K in 50 years. They say that being happy makes you healthy, well I am god damn upset...so good job Robert!

Summary: Read the ENTIRE book...
Review: before judging! The inductions phase CAN be high fat, but it doesn't have to be. This plan helped me to lose 62 pounds, give up stress and emotional eating, and get pregnant. Have you ever downed an entire bag of Doritos and still felt hungry? Have you eaten an entire 1/2 gallon of ice cream and gone back for more? I'm not saying that this diet is for everyone -- I just love those people who complain about losing 10 pounds! I'm just saying that my total cholestoral was 224. I weighed 201 pounds at the age of 29. I was only 5'4'' tall, for heaven's sake! I was taking medication for high blood pressure. I was infertile and taking medicine for insulin resistance. After reading the book twice (yes, I was a hard sell), and following the plan for 9 months, I lost 63 pounds and was FINALLY able to get pregnant. I have a beautiful, healthy 22 month old little girl, my cholestoral is down to 162, and I lost all of the baby weight after breast feeding. This plan has literally changed my life. I actually feel full after a meal, and my cravings are gone. I must admit that the first week was tough, but there is so much support out there if you need it. After the first week, things just became a routine. I have now included some research into lower or 'better' fat choices (i.e. Hampton's and South Beach), but we'll just have to see the results in a few months. Good luck in what ever weight management system you choose! This book is truly a gift to share with others.[...]
