Summary: Give it a try!
Review: After 14-days I'm still going and getting more enthused every day! I've lost 9lbs. in 14-days and the ketos sticks really help you SEE it working. The plan is easy to follow, even for a carbo-junkie like me.

I found the book informative, but better as a reference than a straight read. I agree with the other readers who felt Dr. Atkins came off as a bit defensive. He spent a lot of time trying to defend his plan rather than detailing how to use it. The important thing is that it is easy to follow, and it is working!

I have also read Protein Power, by Drs. Eades and found that book is an easier read. I refer to both of them and recruited a friend to try this program with me. We are both doing EXTREMELY well and the plan seems to get easier as the days pass.

I would recommend this program to anyone who has tried every other diet and failed. This is one I am confident I can stick with!

Summary: Great new perspective on staying thin and healthy for life!
Review: 6 people in my office, including myself, have read this book and followed this "diet". We have lost an average of 33.3 lbs each in 12 weeks, and are still going strong. Moreover, my HDL ("good") cholesterol increased so much that my general practitioner asked me for the name of this book! I suffer from reactive hypoglycemia, which means that my body sends out too much insulin in response to carbohydrate intake. I have had no bad "sugar lows" when I was following the "diet" properly. Another lady in my office has serious heart and circulation problems, and was put on this diet by her cardiologist; she is now 30 lbs lighter and is off almost all of her medications!

Some people think Dr. Atkins is a quack, but I think that the results we've seen speak louder than his critics. I've seen "dyed in the wool" skeptics become converts.

Read the book and follow it to the letter! If he says to take vitamin & mineral supplements (particularly potassium, do it! If he tells you to drink a lot of water, do it! Buying the "ketostix" (found in any pharmacy) also helps a great deal both psychologically and physically, because you can track your progress. This is particularly helpful if you are exercising. You will be converting fat tissue into muscle tissue (7x heavier than fat), so you will not see results in how your clothes are fitting, but not on the scale. When you see the Ketostix turn color, however, you KNOW that you are burning off fat!

Summary: Sugar Free!... this diet is for me.
Review: Dr. Atkins diet is easy and fun. I am enjoying eating foods I have avoided for years. However, reading Dr. Atkins book was not easy and fun. I found myself skipping thru pages of meaningless words in order to read the basic facts of this diet. I read a two page article in Woman's World last week which detailed the diet better than the book.

My Results: 12 days - 8lbs = success

Summary: This was the worse diet I have ever tried.
Review: I read Dr. Atkins weight loss book twice. I decided to give it a try. High fat, proteins, no carbos. Within 5 days I was deathly sick and vomiting. I had no energy and was having dizzy spells. My body had went into ketosis (something that sould only be done under a Doctors care in the hospital. Finally ate a bowl of oatmeal and within minutes felt a 100% better. Five days of high fat did nothing towards weight loss but was great towards gaining weight!! I had great pleasure burning this book.

Summary: The book is wordy, and confusing but the diet really works.
Review: I have lost over 25 pounds following the diet...but the wisdom was imparted to me in five minutes by a friend. For breakfast eggs and bacon...lunch chicken or a cheeseburger and no roll...and dinner as much protein as you like and four onces of salad. Follow for two weeks and you will lose weight...Atkins is more detailed and rationalizes the insulin issues around obesity...having had an overweight problem for years I now am thiner, have more energy,and count carbohydrate grams versus calories...the book takes you through the process and the system works.

Summary: This really works!!
Review: I was very apprehensive about this diet, but reading the book only encouraged me. I started the diet July 1, 1996 and by September had gone down 2 sizes!! No more low blood sugar problems, a tremendous increase in energy, and no food cravings are just a few of the benefits. I have kept most of it off, and plan on redoing it very soon. It seems to "love my body" and I feel terrific while on it.

Summary: Good idea, but can you swallow it?
Review: I was excited when I began this diet. As a Bio student I knew that the theory had merit. I threw out everything high-carb and munched on eggs, meat, bacon, and the occasional salad. The macademia nuts were an added bonus! I expected the first few days to be shaky as my body burned up its store carbos (glycogen). I don't feel, however, that Dr. Atkins prepared some of us for the worst side-effect- crippling nauseau! After three days I couldn't possible choke down another egg or slice of bacon. Imagine being able to eat all the cream cheese you want, but no bagel! To combat this I made some protein bread from the book's recipe. This was quite possibly the foulest thing I have ever forced down. It had the consistency of a sponge. And long after the mayo, bacon, and tomato had been swallowed, I was still trying to break it up. It's not worth it. My roommate and I had some Ben and Jerry's and I felt fantastic this morning. I'm going back to fruit and yogurt and mountain biking. It worked for me once, and I can now admit that I gained my weight back because I eat Doritoes everyday, started smoking, and my bike now gathers dust. I hope Dr. Atkin's diet works for everyone else who tries it, they are made of sterner stuff than I. Waiter, pass the pasta!

Summary: The diet works, but the book is thin on practical details
Review: My husband and I have tried this diet now for one week. It really works. I've lost five pounds and he's lost 11. I intend to stay with it -- it's definitely do-able.The book is a helpful introduction but it's a little thin on practical advice and menu plans that will carry you through for many weeks. I've scrambled to begin adapting recipes on my own, for lack of a better alternative. I also bought his recipe book, and hope that this helps. It would have been nice if the book had been organized to take you step by step through the phases of the diet (and specifically what you can and cannot eat in each phase, rather than just general explanations) SO, the diet gets five stars, the book only three. (Plus, his shameless self promotional tone in the book was an annoyance and made me wonder if I was being taken in by another diet fad.Dr Atkins may have done himself an disservice here.)

Summary: So Far, So Good
Review: I have been on this diet for two weeks and I have lost 6 lbs. I hope to lose another 10 to 12 lbs. to reach my goal. I never before had heard of a diet where one didn't have to monitor every calorie they consumed; so this diet is a first for me where fat is not a no-no. I am satisfied that I am losing weight at a safe and sane rate, however, I am concerned about the long-term effects of a high-fat diet. Since I have cut back on carbos, however, I have noticed some amazing results (other than weight loss). I no longer have acid reflux and heartburn; I no longer suffer from insomnia; I no longer have frequent headaches; constipation is not a problem now; I have more energy and feeling of well-being than I've had in years! I believe that I possibly was suffering from hyperinsulinism and I previously never felt quite "well." I now feel better than I have in years. So maybe there is something to this diet. When I reach my weight-loss goal I hope I can maintain that new weight successfully. If I can, that will be proof that the diet totally works for me. Other diets and diet products have not successfully helped me achieve the maintenance I desire. I work out at least 4 times a week and am a normally active 53 yr. old woman. I was a "carbo junkie" and gained 15 lbs. in 2 years as a result. I mistakenly thought a high-carbo diet was good for me. Also, I was always hungry and suffered all of the ill effects I mentioned above. Now on the high protein diet, I rarely have hunger pangs and I don't snack between meals. This I like! I will write another evaluation when I have reached my weight loss goal and have maintained the new weight for at least one year. We'll see if that happens......

Summary: I lost 25 pounds in two months First diet that really worked
Review: The book is sometimes confusing and unclear, but the content actually works.

I started diet in February and lost 15 pounds. I went off diet, back on, off and back on. Lost a total of 25 pounds. The hardest part of the diet is convincing my spouse what foods I can eat and what I cant eat.

The first three days of the diet are hard for me. I feel sluggish and tired. But once I get use to it, the enery returns. I hit a four day stretch where I lost two pounds a day.

I am not in the health profession and I don't know about long term on this diet, but for quick, rapid weight loss, this one works for me. I am 40 years old and haven't been this light since I was 25.
