Rating: Summary: I'm a believer Review: I began the Atkins New Revolution Diet Program in early September. Some 14 weeks later, I had dropped 37 lbs, My blood sugar has gone from 300 to 104, my triglycerides from 400 to 175, my cholesterol from 250 to 195, my blood pressure from 130/90 to 110/70 at the last visit to my doctor. It all defies the logic preached by all the dieticians of the world as well as the AMA. My own physician has started the program after having patients try low-fat diets that brought down their blood chemistry numbers somewhat, but never lost any weight. I can understand the AMA preaching that this diet doesn't work....IT GOES AGAINST EVERYTHING THEY'VE PREACHED FOR YEARS! However, you can't argue with success. I have tried numerous dieticians' plans, the American Heart Association's diet plans as well as the American Diabetes Association plan of exchanges and have NEVER had the success I have had with the Atkins New Diet Revolution. I'M A BELIEVER! IT WORKS!
Rating: Summary: confusing, not clearly written for the everyday person Review: I myself went on this diet, wanting to lose approxiately 15-20 pounds. I found that I was very dizzy, light headed, and having trouble functioning throughout the day. I gave it my best for three weeks and finally quit. I feel this diet did more harm to me because after going off of it I gain an additional 10 pounds that I now need to deal with. Which has become very hard to take off. I find myself a healthy 45 year old women, gaining weight from the normal aging processes. I work out at least 4 times a week spinning classes, and weight lifting. I felt this was to much back ground on him and not enough of the pro and cons. Even through I do know individuals that have had good success on this diet I feel it is not for everyone.
Rating: Summary: Purchase PROTEIN POWER by Michael and Mary Eades, M.D. Review: I have read some of the "not so successful" reviews on here by people who seem to need more information after reading this book. Information that goes more into depth on the "why's & how's" to this marvelous & brilliant way of weight loss, feeling fit, and boosting your health. So that's why I highly recommend purchasing another book called Protein Power. The concept is the same: high protein/ low carbs. I read Dr. Atkins' book and though I was extremely interested I still felt I needed to do more investigation and needed details on the concept of this new way of eating. So I purchased Protein Power and it's full of information that explain why this new way of eating really works! Protein Power even explains why some may actually feel fatigued and weak even to do normal tasks while first starting the diet. They recommend no exercise during the first week while your body adapts. Their claims are backed up by lots of scientific fact. It all makes complete sence. Stick to it my friends, and in no time you will realize why so many folks live better lives including myself. Everyone deserves to feel and look their best. This is how you can do it. Good Luck!
Rating: Summary: Good concept but... Review: the writing style is repetitive and annoying. Why not just give the facts and the diet, and leave off the justification and redundancy? I read this book after 1) working with a doctor who recommended a high protein, low carb way of eating for me... 2) reading Eades' Protein Power... 3) visiting Of the three "guides," I found my doctor most obscure and idiosyncratic. Protein Power is a fact-filled "must" read for anyone exploring this way of eating. Atkins is too restrictive for long-term use. Goldberg-O'Mara Diet Plan in a simple and easy-to-follow manner. I suggest people with insulin resistance use Atkins for the first week only, to get themselves off carbs, read Eades for background info, and follow G/O for the rest of their lives. It's working for me - at last, I can lose and maintain at will, at a sensible pace, after years of yo-yoing.
Rating: Summary: Michelle Magyar or Ft. Myers, FL I finally did it! Review: I love to eat. I was putting on weight more and more each month. I would eat so much and never felt I had enough. This diet has changed my life in more ways than one. I have been on the diet for 4 weeks now (lost 22lbs) and I do not have the urge to eat like the way I did. I eat until i'm ready to bust off the button on my pants and still feel good and look good.I can go to restraunts and order almost anything I want. I have always loved protein based foods such as meats and cheeses. Now, I have learned what I ate with it was blowing me up like a balloon. I have lots of energy and a lot more self esteem. It doesn't even feel like I'm on a diet anymore. TRY IT!
Rating: Summary: Quackery in the extreme. Review: Dr. Atkins's book is the latest entry to the never-ending dishonor roll of fad diets that promote weight loss through some half-baked dietary modification. Atkins's big innovation is ditching carbs -- an appallingly unsafe thing to do with one's diet, since while this does promote weight loss, it's weight loss in the form of protein tissue. Atkins also apparently proposes replacing what's lost with a high-protein diet, but the human body does not work that way, since the protein lost is not regained adequately. The human body cannot convert lipids -- i.e., fats -- into glucose or body energy without also burning carbs, and so must cannibalize itself to do so under this "diet". This book is an atrocious piece of quackery. Do not use it.
Rating: Summary: Finally, Something that works! Review: My husband and I have been on the diet for three (3) weeks. I have lost 16 pounds and he has lost 17 pounds. I am absolutely amazed. I have tried all sorts of diets, (eg. low fat, reduced calorie) but nothing ever worked for me, until this incredible diet. In the book they tell you about all the energy you will have. I thought "ya sure". But boy was I suprised. I have more energy than ever, it's amazing. They say you don't get hungry, and I don't. But my husband is hungry all the time and has sugar cravings. He takes the amino-acids they suggest: L-Phenylalanine for hunger and L-Glutamine for sugar cravings. And they really seem to help. So far the diet is a success. Thank you Dr. Atkins.
Rating: Summary: Awesome Review: I am a beleiver. I am a 36 year old Marine and run 3 to 4 Miles Daily,I had Cancer in my 20s and have had a waiver for my weight, due to the weight gain I had after the Chemo I was given. After 30 days on this diet I have lost 26lbs. Energy level went down after 2weeks on the diet, but went back up to above pre diet level by the third week. I feel better than I have in Years. I had tryed everything from 1500 cal. diets to fasting, it didn't work. On this Diet I ate 3egg omelets w/cheese 5 strips of bacon for breakfast, 2 double cheeseburgers w/bacon for lunch,no bread of course, and a 20oz steak for supper. Not a bad diet to lose approx. a lbs. a day. Thanks
Rating: Summary: Great way to lose weight! Review: I am 35 years old, 5ft 41/2" and was at least 25lbs overweight. I knew I had gained weight, and I hid it very carefully! I tried every quick fix you could think of, after all, I felt I had only a few pounds to lose! Nothing worked. Then I read Dr. Atkin's book and my eating habits have changed drastically! Counting calories is for the birds - watching your carbs and sugar is the only way to go! My whole family is on this food regimine and we've all lost weight - even my "food picky" 12 yr. old! I told him he could eat cheese and he went bananas! He is enjoying sugar free food (especially Jell-o) and loves meat and eggs! I recommend this program to everyone I see because THEY CAN SEE THE DIFFERENCE IN ME! 23 lbs lighter, much more energetic and feeling great!! Read It!!!
Rating: Summary: Still Fat in Colorado Review: Watch out for this one folks. I could not, in good conscience, advise anyone to go on this diet. Reading all the reviews it looks like it's great for some folks, however. I was excited, a diet that allowed me to eat lots of food and still loose weight. I've been gaining 5 pounds per year since menopause. I keep hoping to be my old slim self again. This sounded great. Day 1 - Feel great, like a new diet always does. Day 2 - Beginning to feel alittle light headed and fuzzy but OK, never hungry!! Day 3 - I'm begging to feel shaky, depressed, weak, tired, can't concentrate, dizzy. What is going on? Day 4 - After I get to work in the morning I find I simply can't function at all. I feel as if I'm very ill. All the above symptoms are worse and I can't think clearly enough to figure out what is the matter with me. Finally a clear thought - my body is screaming for sugar!! I eat a cup of applesauce that I have in my drawer and in 5 minutes I'm much better. It takes me several weeks to feel my normal self after 3 days on this diet. Also, I came down with a virus and it hit me abnormally hard, I feel that my body's defenses were weakened. I came to the conclusion that this diet does not work with my body. Much longer and I think I would have ended up in the hospital. Very scary!! The book does not explain this reaction. It wanders into technical jargon and medical history and explanations that I really am not interested in. Dr. Atkins seems to be more interested in touting his background and discoveries than helping the reader be successful in loosing weight. After I read it I had lots of questions but could not find answers after going back through the text. Somehow this seems careless and unprofessional for an M.D.
