Rating: Summary: Diana from Ohio, dvann@awvs.com says this is the book to get Review: I have been on every diet from a-z and kept gaining the weight back! I have been on this diet for 7 days today and have already lost 6 pounds and a friend of mine has lost a little over 30 pounds in 7 weeks! I was very skeptical about starting this, but after hearing that it convinced me to get the book and start. I went to my doctors and got a check up and blood work and he had two things to say about it, one is that if you stick to it to a T you will succeed and if you fall off then you will fail. Those words are my inspiration and so far it hasn't been difficult at all. I know that I have saved money in the long run, no eating out for I am cooking at home more now and my husband surely loves that part! Although he was very skeptical about me doing this for he had a real hard time believing that if I ate things high in fat such as the bacon and eggs and butter and cheese that I would in no way shape or form lose any weight! Well I have proved him wrong on that one! I plan on losing another 45 pounds and I am sure that I won't have any troubles doing so. Take my word for it and get this book, for it is number 1 in my mind! It really works. My hat is off to Dr. Atkins!
Rating: Summary: I love this diet. It works! Review: I have been on the 14 day induction plan now for 7 days. I feel great and my energy level has increased. I don't feel sluggish anymore. I have lost a total of 6 lbs. and never feel hungry. I am also finding out my appetite has decreased. The food plan is wonderful. I have not had a problem with a bad taste in my mouth or bad breath. I attribute this to water consumption. I drink at least 60 oz. of water a day. My husband and daughter is also on the plan. They are amazed at their results. This may not be for everyone but it has made a world of difference to my family. I will be sending in periodic updates. Thank you Dr. Adkins!
Rating: Summary: Losing Weight and Mystery Health Problems Gone! Review: For the past five years I've been plagued with health problems -- aching back, inflamed joints, aches and pains all over. I would get up in the morning and hardly be able to stand up! I was very depressed and also experiencing tremendous irritability, hostility and mood swings. In six weeks on the Atkins diet I've not only lost weight, all these symtoms are gone! Not just improved, but completely gone! It's a miracle. I have NO joint or back pain (after five years of chronic pain) and I feel great and happy and light when I wake up in the morning, with no stiffness. I don't know exactly what's making me so much better, but I guess that I had food intolerances and was eating stuff that kept aggravating them. My sister gave me the Atkins diet book because I kept saying things like, I'm eating such a low-fat diet...I've cut out so many "bad" foods...and I'm not losing any weight! I had a physical at my HMO recently and when I got on the scale I almost cried -- I had actually gained weight, even though I kept trying to eat a low to no-fat diet. I really resisted eating such a high fat diet, because I am about 80 pounds overweight and I didn't want it to get worse. Luckily I found another book about the same time, which I highly recommned -- "Your Body Knows Best" by Anne Louise Gittleman. She has a system of discovering if you're a fast burner or a slow burner and actually recommends a somewhat more balanced version of the Atkins diet for fast burners (me); she says it's all wrong for slow burners, which may account for the widely different responses to the diet. I don't have a scale yet (too many bad memories), butI can feel that all my clothes are hanging on me, and my stomach is flatter than it's been in years. The last time I was at a healthy weight was ten years ago, when I spent six months in Greece. I dropped 50 pounds even though I ate a lot (though I'm sure all the walking I did helped). But when I thought about it, the Greek diet was very similar to the Atkins program -- fish, lamb, cheese, olive oil, and light vegies like greens and tomatoes. I stayed away from pastry and bread, so my body was naturally gravitating to a version of the Atkins diet. Two things have helped me stay on the diet. One is, I often feel I need to eat more greens -- so I buy nutrient rich collards, kale and chard, low in carbs and balances out acid feeling I sometimes feel. The other thing is, I use essential oils in my bath and for massage (Aroma Vera and Aura Cacia are good brands), and I feel they help you detox and they're great for your immune system. I recommend Juniper, Pine, Lavender, Rosewood, Marjoram and Geranium (Lavender, Rosewood, Marjoram okay in the bath; the others better for massage, can irritate sensitive skin). It seems this diet is really good for people who have struggled with overweight for a long time. Critics of the diet don't seem to mention Atkins' insights into metabolic problems, which is what this diet seems to so dramatically heal.
Rating: Summary: Finally!! A diet that works for me. Review: Although full of cheerleading for the first few chapters, Dr. Atkins provides a simple plan to loose weight and keep it off. It is behavior modification not a diet. By eating the right foods one can take control of their weight forever. I lost 23lbs in less than 2 months. I am now on the maintenance phase and feel confident that, if I gain weight back, I can easily take it off.
Rating: Summary: Don't Underestimate this sound, Successful Diet! Review: I was a lowcal, lowfat diet failure, ballooning after a lifethreatening illness to 240 pounds for a 5'2", 33yr old woman. In this book, I have not only found a revolutionary, satisfying diet that has allowed me to lose 15 pounds in my first 30 days, but has eradicated several yrs of lingering post-traumatic illness symptoms. I stress to others, like me, who had months or even years of antibiotic therapy to carefully read (and then do more research on) the systemic yeast problem that Dr. A discusses. I was astounded to learn how many of my complaints (which 10 other doctors couldn't treat) could be directly related to this syndrome. Now, I feel fantastic, my skin, eyes, and hair are glowing, my mental well-being is centered and even, and I'm losing weight without hunger at the same time. I feel I have been given my life back again! Dr. Atkins does assauge his wounded ego many times throughout the book, unnecessarily. The times have finally caught up with you! Suggestion: A quick reference manual..and please someone invent soy pasta!!! I have read of some who report feeling horrible, dizzy - but better after a carbohydrate food. Makes me think of my husband recently when he tried to quit smoking -- withdrawals from sugar? Good luck to all - J
Rating: Summary: Have lost 118 lbs on lo-carb diets!! Review: My biggest pants at one point were 56 inches. I can now squeeze into 36 inch pants, but I can't wear them in public yet. Anyone serious about losing weight should read this and Protien Power, Carbohydrate Addicts books also. Each one of them give you some additional information. You also need to work out aerobically and do some strength training. Fat will only burn in muscle. And weight training will cause your metabolism to rise due to the fact that you have more muscle. At first I felt tired as my body adjusted to the diet change. After every 30 pounds I would plateau and maintain that weight for a month before going down again. I started at 340 and am today 222. I am not sure what my goal weight will be. I think that the goal is to have a normal sized waist and not a particular number on the scale. For me I think that 190 will be about right.
Rating: Summary: if i could give a zero i would Review: not only is the information that dr.atkins sells false but it could also prove harmful to your health due to an increase in blood pH caused by ketoacidosis. If you really want to lose weight you do not need to buy this or any other fad diet book. the secret to weight loss is that there is no secret. weight loss is best acheived by an active lifestyle and balanced eating.
Rating: Summary: All I can say is: THANK YOU DR. ATKINS!!! Review: For those of you that have tried diets and have been unsuccessful, this book will explain to you WHY. I read the entire book before I started the diet and each and everyday referred to it for advice and menu planning. The explanation he gives for the way the diet works make so much sense that I wondered why I hadn't figured it out on my own! The meals are wonderful. I only hope that Dr. Atkins creates his own recipe book! It would be a SURE bestseller! Thanks again, Dr. Atkins!
Rating: Summary: A diet to follow only if your Blood Type is O or B Review: Having read the various reviews by readers who rated the book 1 star, I get the strong impression that these readers' metabolism is not compatible with a high-protein-fat/low-carb diet. A partial answer to this may be offered by Dr. Peter J. D'Adamo's "Eat Right for Your Type", which suggests that your blood type is a key determinant of your metabolic profile. Except for Blood Type O and B, which do well on diets high in animal protein and fats (47% of the U.S. population), other blood types will not do well on the Induction phase (highly ketogenic) of Atkins' diet. Blood type A and AB are likely to do poorly. So, Atkins' book is certainly deficient in not covering this seemingly important angle. Second, the book does not discuss what happens at the brain chemistry level during a ketogenic diet. A good explanation of this is provided in Kathleen DesMaisons' "Potatoes not Prozac", in her Brain Chemistry 101 chapter. In the absence of this understanding, many successful Induction Phase dieters will relapse once they reintroduce carbs into their diets. Finally, from a stylistic viewpoint, the book is written in a defensive mode, as a rebuttal to his many critics, rendering some chapters unnecessarily long and boring. Some readers will be turned-off by this writing style.
Rating: Summary: I had given up! Review: Until a co-worker turned me on to Dr. Atkins Diet. I was really skeptic, but got the book and gave it a try. Three months later, I have lost 35lbs, RIGHT THROUGH THE HOLIDAY SEASON! All I had to do was skip the deserts and potatoes. The Prime Rib, Steaks we great! While all of my friend added weight, I lost. I do wish there was a simple answer to the vitamin and other pills. Dr. Atkins brand is VERY expensive.
