Rating: Summary: excellent book!! Review: I have the cd version and I've listened to it again and again. It gives an excellent overview of American history! And the format makes it easy to use as a quick resource. It goes in chronological order, so you can skip right to the parts that interest you. LOVE IT!
Rating: Summary: A text book for real life Review: It is a shame that more Americans don't have an appreciation for U.S. history. This book is able to fill in all that so many of us once learned in school, but since forgot.Davis offers an entertaining, accessible approach to history. Including the little anecdotes that make history fun, as well as some of the perspectives that we might not have learned in school. I actaully read this before I started teaching social studies and am glad that I did. This does not "dumb down" history, but refreshes the details of events. LEt's face it- who really remembers the details of the tea pot dome scandal? This fun and useful to have around. Also, his Civil War volume is great, too!
Rating: Summary: good referance Review: Often americans don't know too much about their history. Don't know much about history provides a good reference for people to learn about some important information about american history in an easty to understand manner. The book is straight forward being split up into different chapters based on theme and time period. There are questions like what is pay of bigs invasion and who is w. e. b. dubois. The answers are straight foreword and get to the point.
Rating: Summary: Don't Know Much About My Politically Correct Viewpoint Review: I listened to this book on tape. While the first several chapters were very entertaining and informative, it becomes quite apparent that his review of the last 100 years is more of a political statement than an unbiased historical review. For this reason, I would not recommend this book to young students. I would be curious if he keeps the same slant going in his other books, particularly his review of the Bible. I gave it two stars only because I thought his discussion of the Revolutionary period was excellent.
Rating: Summary: HISTORY AS OP ED Review: This book is okay as an "easy-read" refresher on dates and events, but Davis can't keep from helping the reader understand personalities and events from HIS lefty perspective. This was apparent as early as colonial times but by the time he gets to Ronald Reagan -- OY! If you can stomach all the interpretive BS, this is a useful and easy book. I'm sure Davis regrets publishing when he did, though -- leaving the reader hanging as to the finale of the "Bubba" years. Make sure if you let your young'uns read this you "supervise" lest they be fooled.
Rating: Summary: A review Review: As a recent college graduate, I was embarrassed by my inability to recall most of the facts I learned in my high school history classes. However, after reading this book, I was encouraged to seek out more advanced books about specific time periods and individuals that I found intriguing. While some may complain that some of his 'interpretations' are slightly skewed,.. this does not take away from the book..in fact, it makes it far more interesting. I would highly recommend this book for people who are trying to find a delightfully fun overview of history that provides the impetus for a more thorough examination of the events and people that make our nation's history so grand. Two thumbs up!!
Rating: Summary: Review of "Don't Know Much About History" Review: Kenneth C. Davis does a very good job of overviewing American history in this book. His style is informative and very entertaining. The chapter titles such as "Apocalypse Then" are comically brilliant. The book does suffer from a case of terminal liberalism though. While Mr. Davis is more honest than most liberals are about historical figures and events (he does actually criticize people like FDR and JFK for certain things), still Mr. Davis's bias does distort his interpretation of some historical events. One example is of Reagan's 1986 bombing of Libya which he chalks up as just a botched assassination attempt. But if you can ignore the bias, the book is still an entertaining read (just don't take it as 100% gospel truth).
Rating: Summary: Great High Level History Book Review: Highly recommended. Good read. I love Ken's style. He leads you through U.S. History from beginning to present with a Frequently Asked Questions style. The book is easy to read and keeps the reader awake! It's not easy finding a history book that can claim that. If you're interested in history but not sure you want to commit to a book that is more in depth, this book is a good place to start. I found Ken had a lot to say about the first 200 years but it trailed off noticably during the last 50 years or so.
Rating: Summary: Great study guide Review: I used this book to supplement my knowledge for the California MSAT for teachers. A great book for reviewing major historical events. I recommend for anyone who needs to brush up on their history for a standardized test.
Rating: Summary: I guess I payed attention in History class. Review: A nice overview of American History, but not the interesting tidbits I hoped for.
