Rating: Summary: Wow, an amazing (and funny) book! Review: It's amazing when we look at our systems of justice and security today, and when you read this book, you realize that what we think as top security today is leaps and bounds over when this book takes place: during the 1960's-1980's. For Frank Abagnale Jr, a young man who quit school, life became but an incredible dream. First he tried scamming fake checks, and surprisingly, it worked! Then, he actually accomplished even greater trickery, fooling his way onto Pan Am airlines, impersonating a doctor, and even a lawyer! The novel reads like a strange cross between "The Talented Mr Ripley" & "The Fugitive." After getting into the story, you begin to not really think of Abagnale as a theif or criminal, rather you wonder how long he can keep up these charades. It's amazing what he was able to do just by asking simple questions, disguising hiimself to get information, and even conning a man into using a press to make fake checks! Frank Abagnale Jr must have had an honest face on him! The novel here is now under the command of Dreamworks SKG, and is planned as the next project for director Steven Spielberg (A.I.). The book takes a rather strange turn for material, but then again, none of us expected him to make "Schindler's List." Still, the novel is a good read, and it seemingly ends sooner then you think.
Rating: Summary: So So Review: Catch Me If You Can is the story of the ultimate con artist. Some of his schemes are so involved that the reader can't help but wonder what this man could have accomplished if he applied his talents to a legitimate occupation. The book is basically an accounting of the con artists illegal and immoral deeds. This is an okay read-nothing earth shattering.
Rating: Summary: Good Story, In Spite Of The Crimes Review: A fast paced book, hard to believe, but yet still amazing. I enjoyed the writing, in spite of the crimes that the author committed. However, I am not an advocate of people glorifying crime or the criminal. For a good look at the effect of criminals and their crimes on the average citizens, I would recommend reading A Reason To Live: The True Story of One Woman's Love, Courage and Determination To Survive. This book paints the true picture of what life is like as a victim, having to surive the atrocities of real life crime.
Rating: Summary: Amazing Story Review: This is an amazing story. At times it's difficult to remember that it's true. I thought the ending of the book was perfect (some people didn't). Also, some people complained about the crimes he commited. This book is all about a man committing crimes, so if you don't like to read about that, don't buy it. Otherwise his story is well told and an interesting account of deception.
Rating: Summary: TALK ABOUT YOUR HARD-CORN CON ARTIST! Review: I enjoyed the book because of my background in psychology and the criminal mind has never ceased to amaze me. Here you have a man who has played the role of everything from a pilot and pediatrician to a lawyer and sociology teacher. What a tangled web we weave when first we practise to deceive, and deceive he has! He has swindled, conned and scammed his way to the tune of 2.5 million dollars! Abagnale, by his own admission admits modesty was not one of his virtues. After the reading the book the reader may be thoroughly covinced this man had few, if any, easily recognized virtues. Remorse was certainly not one of them. However, similar in personality to Ted Bundy, who was the typical nice guy next door and a mass murderer, Abagnale was certainly not what he portrayed. His lack of remorse, tells me he has a cunning and calculating mind capable of almost anything. He may have been a high school drop-out but nonetheless a mastermind of deceit, and there can be a very fine line between the mind of a genius and insanity. While the book made for interesting reading, the end was disappointing. It seemed to end in mid-air as if half the story was missing. For this reason, the book lost a star in the rating. Do not let this discourage you from reading the book, it still makes a fascinating story.
Rating: Summary: Great book if you intend reading from cover to cover. Review: What a great book! I found the book hard to put down as I needed to know what was going to happen next. I recommend purchasing this book but I also recommend not starting it until you have time to finish it. The first chapter may have started a little slow but once the stage has been set, the action doesn't stop. I had previously owned this book a few years ago and when I was looking to re-read it, I couldn't find it. I ended up purchasing another and it was worth it. Very enjoyable! I hope you like it as well as I enjoyed it. The best part was knowing that book is non-fiction... and it really happened.
Rating: Summary: Rate the book, not the character! Review: Review of this book should not be about approving what Abagnale did. He admits himself being a criminal. If you are offended by such behaviour, please by all means avoid his book. On the other hand, if you are looking for a superb story of someone who has guts, don't miss it.
Rating: Summary: Would you rather the book was called: Ok, You Got Me Review: I am struck by the number of reviewers surprised or felt cheated by the abrupt ending. That is precisely the point. It strengthens the work. The literati constructs that require a resolute ending seemed to have missed the point entirely, especially considering the title itself. Frank W. Abagnale succeeded in his efforts to draw the reader into his confidence, only to abandon them as he strode into the darkness, never to look back. The last three sentences of the book serve as the metaphor by which Frank's story should be judged. The full weight of his larcenous acts culminate with this ending, engaging the reader as yet another victim along his spree. It is, in reality, the only way that this story could end. This is not a story of transformation rather, the true (and granted, boastful) story of a confidence man. The fact that there are so many readers expecting some resolve further illustrates that had Frank not been caught, could continue his craft still to this day. Everyone in Frank W. Abagnale's wake was left with the same emptiness least the reader, and I suspect the moviegoer, forget. In the end, it is the craft not the ending that that evokes this response.
Rating: Summary: juvenile fiction Review: Abagnale begins this tale of fraud in a voice that is somehow insecure--like a Jr. highschooler exagerating the details of his first date. I thought this might be atributed to his young age when the book begins. Unfortunately, the book progresses from start to finish in this shallow braggart's voice, providing little or no insight into the life of a "successful" grifter. The lack of writing skill and depth might say something about the sociopathic nature of the confidence game, but for me it only cast doubt on the truth of his so-called exploits. Could this person actually have posed as an M.D.?--a college professor? I was left with doubts. In short, it was a disappointment. I can't understand how so many readers find this drivel to be so impressive--...
Rating: Summary: Unbelievable! Review: Unbelievable book. For those of you who enjoy non-fiction, you just keep reminding yourself as you read this book that it's all true! What a life! It's a good example of the first amendment in that he could publish all this. The guy never even finished high school. The only negative is his opinion and attitude towards women, although overall, you won't be disappointed.
