Summary: Great self-help book
Review: There is truly an amazing power in this book. I now see that indeed facing the fears and dealing with them is way better than just living with them.

- The brave seducer.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: How are you being?
Review: So much about achieving anything worthwhile isn't just about "doing." It's also about "being" -- the understanding of where we are now, the sensing of ourselves in the moment. This is probably the toughest thing to understand when moving forward on a goal. On the other side of fear is exhilaration, great power. Once we get this concept of "feeling the fear," and sense it deep within our bones, the transformation can be spectacular as we rise to battle and defeat a most scary foe. So what's the downside of feeling the fear? Absolutely nothing. It's a good thing. It helps us know when we are most aware and whether we're on track. Like sadness and pain, it's an integral part of a well-lived life.

Summary: A useful self-help book, for once
Review: This book takes a common-sense approach to fear. I read it about seven years ago, and have found some of its ideas and concepts very helpful:

- Fear doesn't go away until you do what you fear. If you're afraid to place an important phone call, the only way to lose that fear is to go ahead and call.

- There's no such thing as people who are afraid to fly, but people who refuse to board a plane. Many who fear flying board planes all the time - they don't let an unreasonable fear control their lives.

- To avoid debilitating fear in any area we should make sure our lives are well-rounded. Her 'grid' is very useful in this.

- Making a decision will always involve giving something up, i.e. what you would have gained if you had made another or the opposite decision.
Jeffers also urges us to lighten up, and for a society of drama queens that's sound advice!

Worth reading if you're plagued by self-doubts and are feeling unhappy with your decisions.

Summary: I love this book!
Review: This book set me free from false, self-imprisoning beliefs I didn't even know I had!

Dr. Jeffers talks about no-lose decisions. Either way you go, you win. You get "goodies," meaning the experience of life, either way. I had always thought that one had to agonize, think, pray, talk to people, get advice and finally make the absolutely right decision or else all would be lost. How freeing it is to realize I can't go wrong. I get to experience life in all it's fullness either way.

Another section of the book teaches us to make connections in at least nine areas of our life. So many of us connect with just our work, or with our mate, or with a child. When we lose our one and only connection, we are devastated. She teaches us to have and nurture connections in several areas. That way when we lose one, we are hurt, but we can still move on.

Finally, I always thought that when I felt fear it was a sign that perhaps I should back off. Dr. Jeffers teaches that if you're not feeling fear, you're not growing. Fear is just part of life. We all have an internal "chatterbox" that talks at us constantly and tells us all the reasons why we can't do something. Our job is to overcome the chatterbox and she effectively teaches us how to do so.

Summary: Faced my fear
Review: I was fired from my job, which was my greatest fear. A friend told me about Feel the Fear, it has really helped me deal with my thoughts about what to do with my life after being fired. Another book that helped me is Rat Race Relaxer: Your Potential & The Maze of Life by JoAnna Carey.

Summary: Write Down Your Fears!
Review: Fears can prevent you from living your true life path. This book acknowledges what it feels like to experience fear. Then the author offers solid advice and tips on how to excel not after you've overcome your fear but how to excel in spite of that fear. I enjoyed this book so much I included it in the suggested reading list of my own book titled, Rat Race Relaxer: Your Potential & The Maze of Life.

Summary: Yeah, Susan. Yeah!
Review: Everyone else was too afraid to review the cassette of Susan Jeffers Ph.D. reading a condensed version of her splenetic book, Feel the fear... (etc). I haven't touched the book. But on the tape she's sweet but harsh and really hits it home that you've got to face this thing....and I've known it all along, but she paints it so clearly, that this stuff's all going on in your head, and it's only a game. But she paints it SO clearly, so clearly...

Everybody. Listen to this. (Or read the book)
Fear is fun. It's like a drug--pushes you on, feel that slimy up your spine as you push the limits, and just keep repeating [it's only a game][it's only a game]

Summary: Uplifting & helpful
Review: This book really helped me make some good decisions in my life.

It is very practical, uplifting, helpful. It is full of excellent common sense and easy to apply tips.

I made some important decisions and changed my life for the better. This book helped me along the way.

I only regret that Mrs. Jeffers seems to imply that if you have cancer, you did something to "deserve" it, like eating junk food or dwelling on negative feelings. I'm sure some positive, healthy people get cancer too.

Summary: Excellent resource for improving your life
Review: I am a clinical social worker and have recommended this book to countless clients. It is an excellent introduction to cognitive-behavioral techniques and is helpful in dealing with a wide range of issues, from a breakup of a relationship to a job change to general self-esteem improvement. I especially like the exercises that give the reader an opportunity to try out the theories and apply them to everyday life. Some of her phrases (like "chatterbox") are corny and she repeats them too often, but try to look past it. The content is worth it.

Summary: Did nothing for me
Review: An over-simplistic approach - the title says it all. The author doesn't help you or tell you how to overcome your fears - she just keeps telling you "you can do it". She also refers to herself too often as her primary topic of research without taking into account that just because something worked for her it is not necessarily universal.
