Rating: Summary: A Good Book With A Bad Ending Review: Overall, I thought this was a good book. The plot was good, the characters were well developed, and it was not exceedingly difficult to read. Some of the vocabulary was a bit difficult, though. The only problem I had was that after reading 440 pages, the abrupt ending didn't seem to fit.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Novel Review: Cold Mountain, in my mind, was one of the best books I've ever read. In the story we follow Inman on his trek home from the Civil War to his love. In this Americann Odyssey we meet many characters who lead us through many tales. After the first few chapters the reader attains an interest in the life of all off the characters. And this keeps you tied to the story and anxious to read more.
Rating: Summary: This book is about as interesting as last week's oatmeal. Review: Now and then a book comes along that is so poorly written that even the most determined reader will find it impossible to finish. Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier is a book you can hardly wait not to finish. By the time you've reached the third chapter you are thoroughly convinced the author owes you a personal apology. Charles Frazier needs to find a job to which he is more suitably fitted.
Rating: Summary: Only read this book if you're willing to THINK when you read Review: This is a superb novel--and what is even more amazing is that it's Frazier's first. The narrative has many layers to it and the characters are richly drawn. But I will offer a caution. If you do not like to think when you read a book, skip this fine work. Do not read it if you only want cutesy characters who act like the Brady Bunch visiting a Civil War theme park. A lot of reviewers here are disappointed that the book does not end happily, or that Inman is down-trodden through much of the book. Did they not notice that the book is set during the Civil War, an event which brought about 600,000 Americans to gruesome deaths? This book is only for those who don't need their literature--or history--sanitized....I deeply admire "Cold Mountain" and will be glad to give Frazier's next work more than a passing glance.
Rating: Summary: a great book Review: I love this book! The language, the sentiments, the pacing all evoke a different era. The major characters are wonderful: thoughtful and heroic. The detailed descriptions of life at that time are amazing. Cold Mountain is a great book and I am rereading it now.
Rating: Summary: Huckleberry Finn was definitely more interesting! Review: Frazier's tortuous and rambling account of a Confederate soldier's adventure through the North Carolina landscape was like a tornado of depressingly long and boring descriptions. I am a fan of the succinct, and I believe Frazier worked too hard to try to impress either the reader or himself! The encounters that Inman experienced left me with a negative view on his character. In fact, all of the characters in Cold Mountain lacked not even a semblance of integrity or strength. Ada reminded me of Diane Chambers from Cheers!!! Only Ruby came closest to standing upright. I must say that this novel does an extreme disservice to the people of North Carolina and the South in general. I am no history buff, but I would dare say that this story does not present the real South, either during the time of the Civil War or the present.
Rating: Summary: A Waste of time Review: I picked up this book on the basis of all the wonderful reviews that it has recieved, but instead of finding the intriging story that it promised to be I was, bored, sickend and utterly dissalusioned by the content of it. I did not finish it - it wasn't worth it.
Rating: Summary: DREADFULLY BORING! Review: I buy audiobooks based upon the reviews I see. The reviews on this audiobook were way off base. I had to stop listening to it in the car because I was starting to nod off!
Rating: Summary: I felt like I was walking along with him... Review: I could not believe this was the writer's first book. I have read it twice, and will probably read it again - the civil war intrigues me - and this story showed us another side of that terrible war - two people just trying to get back to each other - imagine - the state of the country at that time. I loved Ada & Ruby also. PLEASE - MAKE IT A MOVIE!
Rating: Summary: Extremely well written Review: I never wanted this book to end. Entertaining, well written, engrossing. When the characters were cold,I froze, when they were famished I found myself stocking my cupboards.
