Rating: Summary: This book was dull Review: I was very disappointed with this book because everyone made it out to be some great book and I thought it was boring and dull. It was mainly about two characters, Ada and Inman, who's love was put on hold because Inman went off to war. It went on about everything that happened in their daily lives and it was too descriptive to the point where it annoyed me. I would never recommend this book to anyone because I thought it was the most boring book on the face of this planet.
Rating: Summary: More Monotony Than Marvel Review: My teacher said that 50% of this class would like this book, and 50% would hate it. I am the 1% that makes it 49 1/2% - 49 1/2%. There were parts of it that I liked and parts of it that I hated. The characters were entertaining but their situations were predictable and frustrating. I thought that the reading of the book was just plain old monotony in it's simplest form. I was bored out of my mind.
Rating: Summary: Cold Mountain as dinner Review: If most novels were cheese cake, this novel would be razor back steak. You have to knaw on it for an hour for a single bite, and although you know it's good for you because it's nutritious, it still tastes bad. It had such a good story, but you had to sift through so much garbage just to get it. There were some beautiful lines, but for every good one, there were 57448 piontless lines. I really would love the book if I just didn't hate the writing.
Rating: Summary: something painful is often worth the time Review: wow. For a book of such concentrated thought, meaning and goodness, Cold Mountain is a little long. I don't think it needed to be four hundred and some pages. about half that would do. The book isn't tortureous. It can be pretty enjoyable. The book is a lot of good parts floating around in a bunch of words. The books ending catches a lot of flack.I didn't like it either, at first, but I guess it is what the author intended, and, I suppose, the best. Read it yourself. See what you think. It'll be worth your time.
Rating: Summary: The book was a little too descriptive, but very good. Review: I thought that this was a very interesting book. It was very descriptive, which got monotonous at times, but it really added a lot to the story. You have to read carefully to pick up all of the details and to be able to understand the story. The ending of the book was well written, but I wish that it would have been a little different. I would reccomend this book to anyone, but it is definately not pleasure reading.
Rating: Summary: don't stop it's worth it in the end! Review: When I began reading this book, I felt as though God was punishing me for a mortal sin. I wasn't captivated in any sense, however, by the end I was happy that I had read it. The language was exceptional. Fraizer truly has beautiful English! I loved reading the detail, although it was a little too much! Definately worth reading!
Rating: Summary: Slow Starter, Better Towards The End, Stick Through It Review: This book is a very slow starter, but as it progresses it gets better and better. Like all other books the beginning is a VERY slow start, but it slowly progresses into a very good work. I wish that the beginning could be almost half as good as the end. The ending is very nice when the author makes you think that Inman is alive, but in the truth he truely turns out to be dead. I love how he messes with your mind at the end. The plates was a very nice twist. Stick through the book, and it will turn out to be a very decent book.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Story Review: What a great depiction of life in the 1860's as it was lived by most people of the time. The ambivalence of the Civil War, the stark poverty of life in the hinterlands of cities, the steadfastness and singlemindedness of the main characters who accept their lot and plod on make great listening. I often wonder if people today could survive the conditions which these people had to endure. Beautifully read and very engrossing.
Rating: Summary: cold mountain left me cold Review: After all the hype I was very disappointed when I began to read this slow moving book. I soldiered on in the hope it would improve but I was even more disappointed. It was extremely pretentious and I cringed all the time I was reading - real people are not like the characters in this book. (I hate these super cool characters - their only place is in second rate fiction)Please do not waste your time reading this book and if you do please don't pretend to agree with all its admirers.- I'm sure none of the critics wanted to be the first to admit how badly written it was.
Rating: Summary: This book was enjoyable. Review: I was disappointed by some students that said that they hated the novel- I personally thought the novel was interesting and addicting. I too am a student, and I was assigned to read Cold Mountain in my english class. However, instead of taking it as a forced read, I thought of it as a joy to read.
