Rating: Summary: this is the best civil war novel i have read Review: cold mountain is the most descriptive and real account I have read of the real suffering and everyday courage that the civil war entailed. It is also very readable and absorbing. I recommend it to anyone who has an interest in the period.
Rating: Summary: Exceptional, well deserving of praise Review: With a stunning evocative power that ranks it up there with historical fiction gems like 'The Triumph and the Glory' and 'The Killer Angels', this exceptional novel fulfilled all of my expectations from beginning to end. It was one of the best books I've read in the last year, a book well worth your consideration.
Rating: Summary: "When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again Hurrah, Hurrah" Review: IF YOU'VE READ (or reviewed) this book and thought it was not good, OBVIOUSLY you've never been in a situation where your only desire was to find your way home. Inman was in this kind of situation at the end of the War Between the States. Right after this book was released it was referred to as "the American Odyssey." This reference made me curious enough to purchase this book. I was glad to find out it was about the history that I was familiar with due to my interest in the American Civil War. Cold Mountain focuses on a different side of the war than I am used to reading about; it is focused on the internal life in a soldiers instead of his life on the battlefield. Inman's only desire while on his struggle through the mountains was to maked it back to his beloved Cold Mountain and Ada. At the same time Ada was on her farm in the mountains of North Carolina trying to grow her daily bread from a farm that she didn't have the skills to run. Both stories are extremely heartbreaking. I really loved this book, and I feel that it is worth reading again. There are many stories within the story that kept me glued to the book. I really felt that Inman would give up his journey and live with some of the people who he encountered on his trip home. This book will make you look at the life of a soldier in a different way. Too many books glorify war and show the manly side of fighting; this is not one of them. Inman fights and kills for his own survival, and in these fights YOU will want his enemies to die almost as much as Inman does. Finding out that this book was based on a true story only added to the excitement of the book. This is the first book written by Charles Frazier. He will definitely have a great career in writing if he keeps writing like this.
Rating: Summary: amazing..... Review: I listened to the un-abridged audio version of this book. The reading was done by the author. This is a fine book. The author seems to understand something about the southern way of life. Definetly a book for the southern man who enjoys great writing. Mr. Frazier's voice and the honesty in which he tells this story will make it one of the most memorible audio books that you will ever listen to.
Rating: Summary: This book makes me wish I was illiterate. Review: Although I'm sure Charles Frazier is a very intelligent man I think he lacks common sense. Making an factual account of the Civil War is an excellent idea, but, not when you drone on and on about absolutly nothing for the first 150 pages. Yes, I'm aware it takes the whole beginning to tell the reader the basic jist of the book, yet most books begin to pick up and take interest after the explanation "fluff" . What was Charles Frazier thinking when he wrote EVERYTHING with description! I'm postive there was some great wonderful underlying symbolism in this book but I couldnt find it in all the OVERLY used description. My final complaint is, EPILOGUE: vomit! Charles Frazier obvioulsy stole that chapter from Disney's writers!
Rating: Summary: This book was long, very descriptive, but well written. Review: At first I could not stand this book. It started out very slow, but I really liked the end, even though it was upsetting. If I didn't have to read this for school, I don't think I would of finished this book. Some parts of this book had too much description, although some of it was needed to get a better picture of the characters, and their actions. I found Inman's chapters to be more exciting, and entertaining than Ada's, even though I liked some of hers. The last chapter and epilogue were my favorite chapters, but at the same time, I didn't care too much for them. I liked them for how good they were written. The end kept me interested, but upset me. I can't believe Inman had to go through so many struggles (400 pgs) to get to Ada, and then he dies. I guess I just like happy endings. I really wouldn't recomend it, unless you have a lot of time and patience. All in all I think I liked this book more than I didn't.
Rating: Summary: What a fabulous tale of life Review: What a monster! First and foremost, I enjoyed the book very much. From the very beginning the detailed ideas have been appreciated. I've never read such a book that would require so much thought. I believe that Frazier was well experienced when it came to the knowledge of being able to survive, and it impacted the way he challenged the readers to a great extent. I preferred Inman's chapters far more than Ada's for it seemed(to me at least) that Inman went farther in his journey to reach his goal than Ada did. I had very few complaints overall, and they did not flaw my opinion when I had completed the book. I was pleased when I read that Inman had died, for I thought that was the only way it could've been. If he had lived, it would've been the classic soap opera ending and it wouldn't make you think as much in the end. As for the slight blemishes, to me they were so minute that I would've never noticed until it was brought up in my discussion class. The daughter that Ada bore, first off, was thought to be uneeded. I thought that there could've been someway other than the child that Ada could've remembered Inman. To add upon the point of disliking the girl, she was stated to be nine years of age. This sounded perfectly fine unitl the dates were listed and they didn't quite add up. She couldn't have been nine years old, but coming upon the age of nine. Other than that, I believed the ending to be quite exceptional. I hope that I have another chance to read it again so that I may be able to absorb even more ideas and feelings that were so eloquently written.
Rating: Summary: Too much pointless detail Review: I guess the book was good. It was not the best. I don't think it was hard to read just boring. The Ada chapters were good at first but by the end I enjoyed the Inman chapters. Pangle and Veasey were my favorite characters. It was sad Pangle died. The ending was ok, the begining wasn't that good but the middle chapters were the best. It makes you think how hard life was, and how much we take for granit. we expect food and cloths handed to us. They had to work hard everyday for a simple meal. I liked it over all.
Rating: Summary: A traumatic love story Review: The beginning of this book was very slow and drawn out, but once I was finished with it, I loved it. I think Charles Frazier is a great writer that knows too many words. The only thing I didn't like about this book was the over desription and the time it takes to get to the point. I would recomend this book to anyone who has the time to read a really dense and hard book and that would enjoy this wonderful love story.
Rating: Summary: 449 Pages of Nothing Review: I particularly did not like this book. Nothing happened! All the characters did was walk and work for 400 pages, nothing else. In my opinion, it was a very typical love story. It has a slow begining, a slow middle, and a not-worth-it ending. I would not recommend this book to anyone, unless they had insomnia.
