Rating: Summary: Cold Mountain Amazing or Dull???? Review: Cold Mountain was definitely a better book than most others I have had to read for school. It was not the best one I have ever read, reasoning that my love lies in mysteries and the unexplained. Yet the book did grap my attention and keep it throughout the story. I liked the way the story was set up, capturing the sorrow and hatred of the world. Ada was my favorite character. When her father died she had no idea what to do or even how to survive. Despite all of this she still had strength and will, when Ruby came to help her she put her all into the learning and making of life. Inman had many more adventures but so much of his tale was just walking!! I didn't like him as much as Ada; he was so hollowed out from the war that he was quite depressing. I also felt bad for him, he had been throught so many horrible events in the war and on his way home his had to witness many more!! I don't know whether it's the fact that I am an optimist and love happy endings or that I see so much unfairness in the world and don't want to read it in the books, but I didn't like the ending. It wasn't fair, Inman living through so much only to die after finding his love and getting home.
Rating: Summary: Walking, Farming, Turkeyhunting, and mashed potatoes Review: Man oh man, how I seriously did not like the beginning of this book. When the ending comes around, that's when the good stuff happens. This descriptive, um, thing, was ever so boring, but the ending was great, but I can't tell you what it is!! Someone told me what it was, and it totally ruined everything. But, if you're one of those people who like descriptive writing and you like falling asleep while reading, please, by all means, READ THIS BOOK!!
Rating: Summary: Cold Mountain....ugh.... Review: Cold Mountain was very well written. The characters were very memorable and amusing. The book was very descriptive in almost every action a character did. That was the doing and the downfall of the book for me. Though his writing gave me a clear picture in my head the undeniable use of external detail made the book drag and made it londer than it actually is. Ada was probably my favorite character. Her parts were very comical and entertaining along with ruby on the farm. The Inman scenes were also good but he just kept walking which made him tedious and boring. If it wasn't for the good ending i would have given it 1 star instead of 2.
Rating: Summary: Conflicting Cold Mountain Review: This book was very well written, but personally I think that is used external detail to the extreme. It went a little over the top with it all. Between walking and farming, there wasn't much else. The whole theme of the book can be completely over-looked by someone who isn't committed to reading the book the whole way through, page for page. The ending of the book is inevitable for a love story, but it just seems that there could have been a better way to finish the novel. The ending ruined the whole experience for me.
Rating: Summary: Cold Mountain is Cold Review: Walking... Farming... Walking... Farming... Hard to keep up with what's happening between all the walking and farming. The ending was the best part of the book, but still all the walking ruined it. I couldn't stand reading the book, I could barely keep my eyes open. I would never recommend.
Rating: Summary: Great book.. I didn't find the beginning slow at all... Review: Funny how many people said the beginning of this book was slow. I disagree. I was hooked immediately-- seriously hooked. I actually thought--within the first five pages-- I am going to be sad to see this book end. The writing is beautiful and lyrical-- amazing rounded characters-- lots of action. It is just a great book. The thing is-- this book falls into a funny category because it is a romance and an adventure-- but it doesn't do all the work for you. I like that in a book-- and it seems increasingly rare. A few years ago the NPR show "Talk of the Nation" did a "Bookclub of the Airwaves" about Cold Mountain. Lots of great info and comments from readers. You can hear it at their online archive.
Rating: Summary: This Book IS ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!! 5 x 10 stars. Review: Charles Frazier's masterpiece of a novel incorporates entrancingly poetic descriptions filled with lush, beautiful remarks on the true meaning of life. This is one of those books, that when you finish reading it, you want to go drive your 1987 Honda off a bridge with your girlfriend and her 80 year old mother tied up in the trunk. It is THAT good. Its like your first kiss and your first heartbreak rolled up into one big bean burrito of love. Then, after you finish it and digest the whole thing, you end up with the gas necessary to propel you forward to your next destination on the road of life.
Rating: Summary: Not a typical love story Review: Cold Mountain...I really enjoyed this novel. It was a beautiful love story between two individuals with nothing but distance separating them. The novel starts out fairly slow, but begins to pick up after the first thirty pages or so. The novel is written from two point of view: Ada and Inman. Inman and Ada had once lived in the same town, but Inman was called off to battle and had to leave Ada behind. When the war ends, Inman makes the treacherous journey back to Ada and along the way he meets a number of interesting characters. Meanwhile, Ada's life is taking her places she neevr thought possible, and her whole life is transformed. This is a fairly quick read, yet not a typical love story
Rating: Summary: Cold Mountain- Keepin it real Review: Cold Mountain starts off rather slow, but as it goes along it picks up speed, as well as excitement. Overall it is a very good book. It is well written, and seems to effectively capture a more personal side of the civil war. The author is extremely effective in bringing the characters to life. His writing is very descriptive, and beaitifully portrays the nature and scenery of cold mountain and its surrounding area. Frazier shows the different affect that the war had on both the men, and women. He has a very enjoyable usage of language. Throughout the course of the book he shows how both of the primary character, Ada, and Inman, struggle to get over the past, and push through their far less preferable present. Over all it is a very enjoyable, and informative book.
Rating: Summary: Review!! Review: This book, was a good book, but the beginning was very slow. I was about to put it down while in the middle of the first chapter. If it wasn't for the teacher telling us tha we had to read all of the book, I wouldn't have read it. I'm happy that the teacher pressured us as much as he did. The book turns out to be worth while at the end. I, personally, don't like to read war books, but this changed my mind. I definitely recommend this book, to anyone who likes to read. I give it three stars because it was very slow in the beginning.
