Rating: Summary: Cold Mountain is a place of thought, hope, & new beginnings. Review: Cold Mountain is a book dealing with the many thoughts, sights, and travels of a lonely man and a newfound woman. Inman and Ada are both exploring their souls throughout this novel and learning new things about themselves. Over the course of time that the two are apart, they each grow in new and different ways. "Certainly neither she nor Inman were the people they had been the last time they were together. And she believed maybe she liked them both better now." There are moments of both darkness and light throughout this journey, and we watch as they conquer the bitterness and triumph in their joys. "You could become so lost in bitterness and anger that you could not find your way back. No map nor guidebook for such journey. One part of Inamn knew that. But he knew too that there were footsteps in the snow and that if he awoke one more day he would follow them to wherever they led as long as he could put one foot in front of the other." This novel was really well written, if one can stand the expressive drawn out detail. It doesn't always move as fast as some would like it too, yet you can't not finish it because you are kept on the edge of what is going to happen next. It's a good book that I may read once again later on in my life.
Rating: Summary: I am summarizing the book Cold Mounatain by Charles Frazier. Review: Recently my eleventh grade english class finished reading the book Cold Mountain. When I first found out we were reading the book I didn't know too much about it, however I really came to enjoy the book. At first I found it very hard to get into the book, but once I got going Cold Mountain really kept my interest. Since I'm seventeen it is hard to find a book to spark my interest, especailly when I'm forced to read it on a schedule, but I found it difficult to stop reading the book. Cold Mountain surprisingly had every part needed to make it enjoyable. I would definitely recommend Cold Mountain to anyone who is willing to sit down to a descriptive, well-written story about the road home from the Civil War. Cold Mountain is pleasant reading for people of all ages.
Rating: Summary: Charles Frazier is God.........! Review: Cold Mountain is one of the best books I ever read. Charles frazier's use of vocab and description really displays his excellent writing abilities. We read this book in my cp english class and I think that our class discussions helped me pick up on more of the little things I think I would have missed if I read it on my own.I imagine we will see more of him in the near future and look forward to it. It's hard to believe that this is his first published novel! Look out Charles Dickens!
Rating: Summary: A very interesting book Review: Cold mountain is a very well written book, with many interesting charecters. I don't even like to read and I enjoyed the book more than anyother book I have ever read. The way the alternating chapters were written was a good idea, it gave you a break with the main charecters. The best supporting character in the book would have to be Veasey. Thier was so many descriptive paragraphs it made you feel like you were thier the whole time. I would recomend this book to any one.
Rating: Summary: If not for Mr. J, I wouldn't have gotten to the good part! Review: I really liked Cold Moutain, after I got started. It is a rough book to read, and takes work to get through. It needs a lot of time and quiet to read and understand. I admire Frazier for having the ability to stump the intelligent and make all our young minds ponder. I read Cold Mountain for my 11th grade English class. At the beginning, I hated the book and was only reading it so I could pass the daily quizes. By the middle, I was reading to find out what was going to happen to Ada, and who Inman was going to meet next. The second half of the book contained much more action at Ada's farm, which I enjoyed reading about. Her life got much more interesting when Ruby came along. she was forced to do things she never imagined having to do. Inman meet some neat people also. His encounters were truely unique. Who has ever met a goatwoman, or slaughtered a pig, or met a man with a 3 legged dog and a slanted house? I really liked the ending. Many people hated it, but I thought it was so good. Of all the things I expected, that was not one of them. I don't know how Frazier ever thought of that. I was so dissapointed that Inman didn't get to marry Ada after his rough journey but, it surprised me. Cold Mountain wouldn't have been right if after all the hard times it ended that easy. Overall, this book was awesome, if you finished it. Otherwise, it was a waste of time.
Rating: Summary: One of the better Civil War books....... Review: I have only read a few Civil War type books, and this has to be my favorite. The characters Ada and Inman were described very well. This book shows that Charles Frazier actually did a lot of background work on the civil war before writing this book. This book was written so good that I felt as if I was actually in the book with Ada and Inman. Ada's chapters were descriptive and had that type of down-home feeling. A total clash with her chapters were Inman's. His chapters gave you an actual feel for the war and what things happened. I would have to say that I really liked Inman's chapters a lot better. Only because his had a lot more excitement. I didn't give this book a 10 because I have read better books although this was one of the better books. I would truly recommend this to anyone, who can comprehend it.
Rating: Summary: read it to impress people Review: If i wouldn't have had to finish this book in a specific ammount of time it would have taken me quite some time to finish reading. Being caught up in the fast pace of the 90's i found no real anything untill 1\2 way thru. After that, some chapters were actually humorous. I don't think more entertainment would have fit in the book but it was nice to know the author posessed at least some ability to be funny. It was upsetting that it took so many pages for Ada and Inman to even meet. Mr. Frazier definetly has a unique style,(especially in punctuation). It's a good book to have read but not for entertainment. I kind of like it better now that I'm done reading it. The book should have ended with no epilogue. If left at the last chapter, the fate of Ada and Inman could have been left in the reader's hands. So it could have been happy with togetherness, morbid or anything. When it comes down to it read it to impress people you know. i didn't like having to rate it. Ratings depend on so many factors it's hard to narrow it down to one number.
Rating: Summary: This book is the story of my life, during the time of war. Review: Right from the start of this novel, I enjoyed it. I've read a lot of books, and most of them are... "Jurassic Park" books. I've never taken time to read somthing like this. What do we call it? A romance? Adventure? I have absolutely no idea, and I love it. A man is wounded in the greatest battle of our country. He searches everywhere for the woman that he loves. He meets countless people on his journey. When he finally finds her, the ultimate sacrifice is paid, and tragedy is inevitable. I loved this book. It has such a unique blend of love and hate, adventure and the boring experience of a room filled with flies. Sadness and humor. Happiness and dispair. You just know that Inman will find her. You KNOW that they will live forever in their world of happiness. Or do you? The ending of this book will forever stick to my memory. The answers are kept all the way until the very end, and it is not a let-down. Do you want a good book? I'm serious. This is fabulous reading. Heck, I read it in my Lit. class. It's gotta be good.
Rating: Summary: I believe it was to drawn out. Review: This book I feel it was so boring and drawn out that I feel asleep reading it at work. In my opinion it could have been a little less descriptive. If it would have read with a little more action rather then telling about a tree around the other side of the mountain. A few of the passages I did like. The passage I liked was when Inman took the saw and coped the bull into several pieces. If the author would have went into more detail like he did for the one about the cave it would have been a little better. If this story was not for a grade and I had time to really sit down read it. It my have been a little better. So all an all it was an okay novel. Personally I would rather read Stephen King.
Rating: Summary: well writen, but boring Review: I found this book somewhat boring. I wasn't real interested in hearing Inman get shot at and Ada whining about whether life was worth living or not. I guess it was alright for a school book, but to read it outside of class would be next to impossible. Don't get me wrong it was a well writen book. It had a lot of intense detail and related well to the time the story was supose to happen. That is why the book works so well in a classroom. I would recomend this book to a person who is more interested in detail than action, because as far as action, it just wasn't there. I would also recomend this book for classes from 10th to 12th grade and maybe a freshman in college. Most people under that would probably have a hard time with the book.
