Summary: This book does require an IQ over 100 to appreciate.
Review: After reading a number of the reviews by Amazon readers, it appears that if you are under 18 and have the IQ of a broomstick, you probably won't like this book (one reviewer didn't even believe that there was a Civil War!) It's really a shame that the younger generation doesn't appreciate this work more -- maybe a few years in the real world will add some perspective to their shallow lives.

Summary: Amazing.
Review: I was profoundly impressed by Cold Mountain -- especially considering that it is a first effort. Frazier's use of language is marvelous -- lush and stark at the same time. I haven't read such evocative descriptive passages since I last read anything by August Derleth. I still find myself thinking about this book, even though I finished it some months ago. On a side note, I would encourage some of the young people who have panned Cold Mountain to read it again in 10 or 20 years, when they are further along in their own life's journey. Though they will likely never have the sort of heart-rending experiences of Inman and Ada, a little maturity might give them a deeper understanding and appreciation of this book's themes.

Summary: A new American classic
Review: I hate Civil War stories, I NEVER read classics, and my mother, who read it before me, and I have very different taste in literature. That said, when I slowed down my pace to capture each image I reveled in the absolutely magnificent use of the English language. I was so drawn in to this story. I can see why so many reviewers have compared this to Homer's Odyssey. Wow. This is one of the great books of the 20th century.

Summary: Outstanding
Review: I enjoyed the pace of this novel-so much like real life. Many seem to think it meanders, but why the rush? Life unfolds and so did this beautifully written, eloquent story. I felt the characters well-written and real. I did not necessarily always agree with their actions and decision making, but then again, I don't always agree with my own! A wonderful story and I look forward to Mr. Frazier's next novel.

Summary: A very descriptive style of writing. Lots 'o' #2
Review: I loved the storyline and the way the plot twisted. I especially loved the way the author made me think about the literal meaning and the underlying meaning. The author leaves everything at an open end. It's an interactive book. 80) I LOVE JUNIOR!! The author was very descriptive and the story became like a movie in my mind. I even suggested it for my lovely and beautiful sister, (who is here at the moment) to read it.

Review: I only read this book because my AP English teacher assigned it. It's absolutely wretched. I can't believe DeLillo lost the National Book Award to a piece of crap like this. Frazier is one of those authors who will be famous in their time but unknown to future generations. If you want REAL writing, read Pynchon's Mason & Dixon or DeLillo's Underworld

Summary: Amazingly written! What an experience!!!
Review: I am 17 years old and was assigned Cold Mountain in my eleventh grade English class. It is definately in my top 5 favorite books of all time! I found Frazier's writing intriguing and thought-provoking. At the same time, Frazier was able to throw in some comical insidents to lighten the atmosphere some. I found Ada's change from prissy and "civilized" to being a true down to earth laborer very realistic. I especially enjoyed the story of Monroe's ignorance of the Cove people's level of inteligence. It seemed very much like something a "civilized" person would do even today. I will definately read Cold Mountain many more times in the future. Having other people's insights helped imensely in the parts that I had trouble understanding.

Summary: I thought it was a little slow at first but I enjoyed it.
Review: The first few chapters I thought were a little slow but after about the third chapter I really started to enjoy it. I liked all of the descsiption in this book. My favorite chapters were those that focused on Inman and his experiences during the war. The thing that I like about his style of writing is that it is real, he doesn't sugar-coat anything. Overall it was a pretty good book.

Summary: The Odyssey revisited
Review: Charles Frazier's modern day take on Homer's Odyssey is nothing more than a weakened version of Cliff's notes. For me this book was like paying $7 to sit through a bad movie. When I started reading this book I expected that it would live up to its reputation. However I learned that being on the New York best sellers list and in the process of being made into a movie, is a lot to expect from a first time author. The stories within Cold Mountain aren't all that exciting. There were points where I found myself struggling to reach the end of the chapter, praying that something extrodinary would happen. This is pretty much how most of the book was for me. Most, meaning not all. There were parts that I enjoyed, but it wasn't enough to give the book the appriciation some say it deserves. The only part of the book that makes it worth reading is the ending, which is incredibly bittersweet. In my opinion this book isn't all that it is made out to be. It isn't terrible and it isn't great, it's simply somewhere in between.

Summary: Graphic,long, and off the subject
Review: This book was supposed to be about the civil war! Well at least the first two chapters were anyway. Some of the chapters were funny and the charicters themselves were fun and interesting,but other than that I didn't like the book. It's two stories into one which is fun,but in my oppinion, the Inman story is funner than the Ada story only because the Inman stories were adventurous-he actually went out of the house. Ada stayed in the same area at all times wining about how her life was so boring and feeling sorry for her self. I wouldn't have read this book if I didn't have to. I thought the book was all right.
