Rating: Summary: Stand back! He's on the loose Review: If you've read Running with Scissors and liked (or at least appreciated) it, you'd better read Dry, too. It's mostly about Augusten Burroughs's re-entry after leaving rehab after his obligatory 30 days. Somewhere in the process of his experience 'inside,' something clicked, and he actually starts to examine himself, his motivations, his life, and the choices he's made - and it's not easy. Not easy for Burroughs to live through, certainly not easy stuff to write, not all that easy to read, either, but it sure makes for a good story. Funny, heartbreaking, and searingly true. You couldn't make this stuff up.
Rating: Summary: Dissapointing Review: Others have said it well....after the rehab section this book falls totally flat. It's just not interesting.
Rating: Summary: Addiction for the layman Review: The problem with most books that deal with addiction is that you have to be an addict or have been an addict to understand them. Augusten Burroughs' "Dry" follows in the footsteps of Rikki Lee Travolta's "My Fractured Life" as a great book about an addiction character that doesn't require the reader to be an addict themselves to understand.
Rating: Summary: More disturbing and more rewarding than Running W Scissors Review: The sequal to Running With Scissors is even more disturbing and more rewarding; a much more mature work and one that haunts you long after you finish reading it.
Rating: Summary: even better than 'running with scissors' Review: this book caught me off guard with its raw emotion. i was expecting something more quirky but am thrilled with what i got. i highly recommend this book and anything else burroughs has written or will write.
Rating: Summary: The title might be "Dry" but the book certainly isn't! Review: This book is even better than "Running With Scissors!" Twice the dysfunction and twice the fun! Don't get me wrong, this memoir has its profoundly sad and poignant moments: the loss of his best friend to AIDS, the total loss of self respect and the constant foibles in trying to regain it etc... but Augusten Burroughs has this uncanny way of making something as serious as alcoholism less "heavy." While the disease should never be taken lightly, people who live through such tragedies with triumph have ultimately earned the right to make a joke out of them. Sometimes it is the only way to live through something without wanting to kill yourself. I've always appreciated someone who can laugh in the face of adversity and joke about the things that were once impossible for them. It is a sign of strength I admire very deeply in this author. He allows his readers to be voyeurs into his once private hell and I for one am glad of it. Burroughs has a true fan in me. I'll be eagerly awaiting the next installment of his crazy life.
Rating: Summary: Amazing Book Review: This is definitely a must-read. Augusten Burroughs has a way of writing that can bring out the humour (however dark) in the most harrowing subject matter.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic Read Review: This work by Augusten Burroughs is enlightening yet so much fun to read. If you are in recovery you should read this book, it will make you think yet it's a laugh-out-loud good time.
Rating: Summary: Coming Full Circle Review: Though parts of this book are very witty there is no way not to understand the true addiction and abuse that has been suffered. For me this book was an emotional look into a difficult life, and a courageous break with that cycle. One of the best read books I have had the pleasure of reading.
Also read books by Katlyn Stewart, Maya Angelou and the other series of books by Augusten Burroughs
Rating: Summary: Addiction is abuse of self Review: Ursula, Memoir fan This book is a wonderful piece of literature. It is hard to put down and you are given the lessons to understand addictions in its raw forms. Addictions of any kind, take a toll on the person. This author does well to tell us his story and to make us understand what it is like to walk in his shoes. You also are shown 'HOW' this addiction comes about. The abuse is abuse...is abuse theory. That people live what they are taught in so many ways. What a compelling piece of work. I would also like to mention here a few other Memoir style books that have captured my attention the way that 'DRY' has. They are: 'NIGHTMARES ECHO,MY FRACTURED LIFE and RUNNING WITH SCISSORS. Read 'DRY'!!!
