Summary: Not what you'd expect
Review: I suppose I had higher hopes for a Grisham novel about high school football. This was slightly disappointing, though it did remind me of my own hs football days. If you're expecting a gritty Grisham novel, stay away.

Summary: Grisham fumbles with Bleachers
Review: Unless you really love football and understand the ins and outs of this game, don't waste your time on Bleachers. The story line gets lost in all the game jargon and the characters are stereotypes of small town folk. The ex football stars lament their former glory days while criminals and cops share a beer together reminising on thier teen years. They come across as fake, dull and I did not care in the least what became of any of them. Grisham's leading man, a former high school football star, who lost his big chances when he was injured in college, returns to his small town after the death of his former coach. He is arrogant, complacent and unlikable. Apparently he has come home to face his past demons but Grisham spends so much time describing technical football plays that I'm not sure exactly what those demons were aside from the fact he did not like his coach and still felt jilted about losing out on a career with the NFL.
This is not typical Grisham fare by a long shot and if you are expecting any thrills you will be dissappointed. I applaud that Grisham is willing to take a risk and try new things; I really enjoyed his efforts with the The Painted House and Skipping Christmas. But where Grisham scored with those novels he drops the ball here.

Summary: Forget about who the writer is..
Review: So long as you don't expect this novel to be as great as Grisham's old works, you will find it very enjoyable. It is not meant to be exciting, rather to be short and emotional and well written.I definitly found it to be worth the time. Most people will be able to relate to the main character, Neely Crenshaw, because of all the emotional hardships he has dealt with. My only advice is to wait for the paperback, because of the leagnth and price of this novel

Summary: A MUST READ FOR ANY TRUE JOCK!!!
Review: Bleachers is by far the greatest football book I have ever written. Grisham truly captures what it's like to have played high school football for a small town that demands big things from its players. Nostalgia ran through me from page one, and I didn't put it down until I was done. Anyone whose love for the game still runs through their blood will cherish this book, and any nerd who doesn't know the game will hate it, it's that simple. For those of us who are in the brotherhood of gridiron gladiators, you can't go on without reading this book.

Summary: SKIPPING BLEACHERS
Review: I like football and a good football story--I watch PLAYMAKERS--- but I didn't like this book even a little. It was way too JUNCTION BOYS and soooo cliche. The characters were obvious and predictable carcatures that had no dimension. I didn't even like the charater names. I mean did he search the tool shed to come up with "Coach Rake." And "Neely" is the name of a pill popping prissy girl in VALLEY OF THE DOLLS. There was no drama and this plot never unfolded, it just dragged along from the beginning to the end in straight narrow line. But he's Grisham, so I'll give him another chance...BTW--- Thanx for the tip on AROUND ELVIS it was awesome.

Summary: Wonderful for those of us who KNOW A COACH LIKE COACH RAKE!!
Review: This was a great book. I think it should be given to coaches all over who think that they are doing justice to these kids they hold in their hands everyday at practice.

I could totally relate to Neely the main character. I loved the plot and completely enjoy when Grisham does something OTHER than gripping court books , none of which I have read. I loved skipping christmas and each of these two books I find myself laughing out loud and reading in under two days.

Quick, light read. I recommend to those who don't want a THICK plot that you have to follow real closely.

Summary: If you are not an American...
Review: Be careful.
If you are not an American like me and not familiar with football (I do not mean soccer), you might need a lot of patience to finish this book.
I was about to give up reading this book during the middle part where an old football game story was going on and on...
The last part of this book was beautiful and enjoyable for everyone, though.

Summary: A FUMBLE ON THE KICKOFF!
Review: I have been squawking about writers just phoning in the usual fare, but I won't anymore. When it comes to writing about football Grisham is great author about the law. This book fails to capture the imagination and beyond a proffessional job and a good edit, there isn't much praise I can find for this novella. In fact unknown author Thorne Peters wrote a far better real life version of this story in his novel AROUND ELVIS about the boys at Hillcrest High by Elvis' mansion that is not only a great football book but a societal microcsim with Elvis in the center. Tidbit: Grisham actually played football at a high school a few miles from Graceland Mansion, just over the border from Elvis in Southaven Mississippi.

Summary: Entertaining and Thought Provoking
Review: Even for non-football fans this is a must read. Most people will relate to at least one of the characters in the book. How we project outselves to others, our first love, or something we have done or said something that haunts us for a long time.
A quick read that leaves the reader feeling upbeat!

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Simple, fast. harmless.
Review: Grisham's books don't really beg for in-depth reviews. Tne only question is whether you were entertatined or not.

In this one, I definitely was entertained, never bored and finished it in two hours.

I don't know if I'd spend the money on it (stay at Border's and read it there) but for someone who doesn't know football I thought this had a nice spin on the old re-living the past type stories.

Is it Grisham's best? No. But who really cares?
