Summary: A really nice listen for anyone interested in ADHD
Review: This book/ tape is WONDERFUL. It really helped fill in some holes in my knowledge on the subject. The book is very good but as an adult with ADHD I find it very difficult to stay focused on a book that is so long, no matter how interesting. Having them on tape is such a relief. I just pop them in the deck and listen to them while I'm driving and feel all the better for it. I also would suggest a book called Shadow Syndromes by John Ratey that has helped me recognize the symptoms that have plagued me throughout my life without an explanation until now. I only wish it too were on tape. Good luck.

Summary: Excellent book
Review: Good book, helped me to understand what this disorder is about. Non-judgemental and offers some suggestions that I found useful.

Summary: Must read for adults diagnosed w/ ADD later in life!
Review: This book is heaven sent for those who grew up having ADD, but were undiagnosed until adulthood. After being diagnosed with ADD in my 30's, my doctor recommended that I read this book. Initially, I bought the abridged audiocassette version (if you have ADD then I don't need to explain why), but after listening to the tapes I immediately purchased the printed version of the book to learn more.

This book is a real eye-opener. It helped me understand why I am the way that I am for the first time in my life - it was like I could have written most of the case studies in the book myself! The sense of relief that I felt after having read this book was amazing - I finally felt that someone understood what it was like to be me.

The authors are very sensitive to the over-diagnosis of ADD and painstakenly set out to define what ADD is and what it is not. The book doesn't offer a cure all or quick fix, but it recommends a realistic holistic approach to dealing with ADD/ADHD. Not only do the authors offer many tips and techniques for dealing with ADD, but they also try to level-set expectations.

This book would also be an excellent read for the spouse or parent of an ADDer and would allow him/her to gain insight into the challenges that their loved one deals with everyday.

Summary: Hodd winked
Review: When my daughter was diagnosed with ADHD last year, I bought this book. After thoroughly researching the subject of ADHD, I tire of the thesis that our children have minimal brain dysfunction. My child is fine now since she has been on good old cod liver oil every day. Remember the adage Fish is good for the brain. Well its great for the brain and ritalin isnt and never should be even recommended.

Summary: Who me, have ADHD?
Review: This is a great book. I think this is one of the only books that I have ever been able to read and pay attention to. Usually I zone out but because this topic hit so close to home I was able to pay attention. While reading the book I found myself laughing because it was so much like me. I finally realized why I do the things I do and why I have trouble in college. I know I am smart. This also explains why I am so hyper active. I kept telling myself that I don't have ADHD but the more I read, the more I realized that I did. (I was also clinically diagnosed at age 23). This book and a few other books helped to realize that having ADHD is not a disability but rather a character trait with its pluses and minuses. I think it kind of cool at times. I just find myself getting frustrated with the typical ADD downfalls. I think this is one of the best books out there for adult ADD. So good, that others refer to this book when they write theirs. I have read so many books on ADD that it seems like I read the same or similar things and it's like a circle.

Summary: Valuable Resource For We Who Are A Little Different
Review: Ah! If only this book had been written 30 or 40 years ago. Then when my parents and teachers came at me with "You're so smart, why can't you concentrate and get good grades." Or "Listen to me, stop drifting off!" - I would show them this. As it was, as with so many of us, those around us became frustrated, and ultimately came to set their expectations lower. While we came to be our worst critics, and often drowned in depression, guilt, and disarray.

Sound like your life? This is the book for you. Not only does it show that this is the result of a specific set of brain hardware configurations, but it provides real solutions for coping with and even lifting away the fog that pervades our lives.

If you think you or one of your loved ones may have this problem, this is a very good book to get. It sets a useful perspective, and is a great resource.

Summary: ADD is truly a lifelong thing
Review: The focus of the book on adult ADD is quite valuable. Allow me to vouch for the genetic basis, too. My parent and parent's siblings are textbook cases. At least now I can understand a lot of the suffering I went through in high school, college, grad school, and life. The book convinced me to try Ritalin and it was a real eye opener. I would urge those ADD adults who have been scared away from Ritalin to at least try it, if other therapies still arent working. It's for sure not a 'cure', but helps for those times you cant avoid social situations where ADD is a definite handicap, like school, most 9-5 jobs, not to mention most marriages, sigh.

Summary: Driven to Distraction & Answers to Distraction
Review: When I first read "Driven to Distraction" it was out of deep concern for one of my daughters. But due to some very trying times of my own I picked up the books and read them again, and again, and again. I felt relief; now my life's experience's made sense but I next went through a time of grief and it's five states; Denial,Depression,Anger,Bargaining, and Acceptance. Now I am hopeful. I sought medical help. Not trying to use ADHD as a cop out for some major life problems, now something clicked. I now knew why I had made some life decisons that in retrospect were harmful, hurtful, and detrimental not only to myself but also to my loved ones. Relieved by and facing the reality that I had ADHD, I Have it NOW, and I'll Always have it and it will have an effect on all I'll do in life; I have a new hope in going forward. From what I've read, most with ADD or ADHD have high I.Q.'s and are extremely gifted but in order to apply their gifts to life an early diagnosis and treatment plan is important. I have had some major successes and also some very painful failures.I remember telling my doctor how my life could have possibly been so very different had I known when I would young and had help been available then. I'm now in my 50's and when I was young we had never heard of the disorder. And my doctor said, "yes, your life could have been very different and that is gone, we can't do anything about it BUT we have now, today, and from here forward." He said he couldn't help me with the past but he could try to help me now. And he has. I have now read 12 books on the subject and "Driven to Distraction" and "Answers to Distraction" are by far the BEST of those I've read. If you have a child with "ants in their pants" as my grandmother use to say, GET THESE TWO BOOKS, READ THEM SEVERAL TIMES, AND DO YOUR CHILD AND FAMILY A FAVOR AND GET THE HELP that could make the difference between heartache and happiness, failure and success. Do it soon. As for the authors, I am very grateful for their gifts of two great masterpieces. 7 stars !

Summary: Awesome book! Easy to understand!
Review: As a teen, I was looking for a book that I could understand what they were saying! I think that since one or both of the authors (I forget if it's just one or if both of them have ADD) has/have ADD it makes it more personal and easier to understand!!! Plus I LOVE the Q&A parts how it's divided into a kids section, teens and adults!! I really agree w/ them on a lot of aspects and think they're great authors!! The sequel is even better!!!!!!!!

Summary: Get this book right after you get the diagnosis
Review: One of the most helpful things in this really excellent book was the self-diagnostic information. Because of the genetic factor, when a child is diagnosed with ADD, chances are at least one of the parents may need to do a little self-evaluation. The enormously informative case histories and the "100-questions chapter" really helped us a lot in two ways: it put a name to the problems being experienced by my daughter and my spouse, and it gave us a roadmap of what questions to ask the doctors next.

The authors are neutral on medication; they present case histories of successful outcomes both with and without meds. If your mind is already made up (either for or against meds), this book probably won't sway you.

The tone is informative without being clinical, often in the first person, so it feels like sitting down for a good chat with a doctor who's not trying to rush off to the next patient. Also, I appreciated the emphasis on, "it's not entirely a disorder, but simply a variation in perception" (my paraphrase.) Children and adults with ADD may struggle in some areas of their lives, but the authors point out how they can excel in other areas. This is _so_ important to emphasise, especially for children.

This is the book I recommend to people when they ask me for a good "first book" on ADD. If you've had a family member recently diagnosed with ADD, you're probably going to want to do a lot of research; this is an excellent starting point. I also recommend "ADD: A Different Perception" by Thom Hartmann.
