Rating: Summary: Read the book, then write a review!! Review: I own this book, and it was such good reading that I read it in about 3 days. Zell is absolute proof that today's Democratic party is far too liberal and is not representative of the average American. Ideals held by past Democratric leaders like Kennedy and Truman have been replaced by elitist, Massachusetts-style politics. Gone are the tax cuts and belief in a strong military, not to mention national security. Miller is proof that being a Democrat does not mean following Kerry, Daschle, and Terry McAuliffe down a road that is wrong for our country. He has spoken his mind in this book, and his points of view cannot be mistaken. An excellent read.
Rating: Summary: Awesome! Review: I have read Zell Miller's book, and I find it astounding that many feel (now) it necessary to trounce his views! The Honorable Miller expresses his views short, sweet, and to the point. The Democratic Party has become the party of the extreme left, with their often expressed view of taxing the rich (personally, I have never been hired by a poor person)so as to give said wealth to those less off, while failing to realize that such taxation creates class welfare, which they thrive on, and which is the modern day Liberal mantra...tax the rich, because it's unfair they have more money than you do...blah...blah...blah...I would remind the reader to not take a knee jerk reaction to this book, but to really think about what the Honorable Miller is really saying. It is so easy to blame the Republicans for the ills of the U.S., i.e., corporate whoremongers, could care less about the "people", but the bottom line is, as Sen. Miller shows, the people must pick themselves up by the bootstraps, and realize their own potential, and NOT rely on the government...we are a democracy...not a socialist state! If you want socialism...move to France. Frank
Rating: Summary: Well writen fantasy from Republican Zell Miller. Review: Zell Miller is part of that ever shrinking, ignorant minority that believes George Bush Jr. is a good person and a good president. I do not know why he continues to label himself a Democrat as it is clear from this book that he does not support the party or anything it stands for. As the Republican Party has morphed into the party of ignorance and blind sheep, the Democrats have grown and changed with the times. George Bush is the modern Republican idea of a good president...ignorant, unethical, illiterate, morally corrupt but full of Jesus (at least for the cameras). This is what Zell Miller believes America needs. Anyone with a brain may beg to differ.
Rating: Summary: As was previously said, as if it was a bad thing. Review: All you need to know about this book is that Amazon.com is pairing it for marketing purposes with Ann Coulter's fictional offering "Treason."
Rating: Summary: WATCHING MILLER'S PRINCIPLES ERODE Review: Zell Miller should reallign himself with a political party with which he agrees. In spite of a long career in Democratic politics, he is voicing such strident complaints about the party, he may as well just come out of the closet as a Republican. While this book is interesting in that it sheds some light on the ugly inner workings of the legislative process, it is most interesting as a study of a man who started a long career with ideals and aspirations for America but nears the end of his career alligned with the party whose policies are dictated by big corporate donors. The book makes it clear that Miller has lost his conscience along the way, the title of the book notwithstanding. Misguided. Untimely. Sad.
Rating: Summary: Miller should become Republican or Independent Review: No one is born liberal or conservative - its all in a label. I find it so amazing that virtually everyone around here (I'm from rural TN) doesn't grasp the meaning of liberal, apparently neither does Zell Miller! He is proud to have supported the HOPE scholarship program as an example - that would be "liberal" by definition. And liberal does not mean granola eating, peace symbol waving hippie attitude. It is simply a political philosophy. The reason why the Democratic party has lost touch with the white southern vote is not because its lost touch with reality - its because so many white southern voters care more about abortion or moral issues. Liberals believe government should not interfere with personal decision making, or keep people from civil rights - gay or not. I think most Democrats believe that its fine to stand up for what is popular, even if it doesn't help in every precinct. At the end of the day, its sad to see a "Democrat" want the party to revert to conservative values and against civil rights. That is what makes the party pointless! Not what Zell Miller sees.
Rating: Summary: Read this, if you want to know how politics really are Review: This is the best political book I have ever read. It is a very fast read, and will keep you interested. Miller tears the Democratic Party (and in parts, revels Republican stategies) to the whole world. Very interesting perspective, he will show you the real world of politics and the issues.
Rating: Summary: The book is nothing more than mindless ranting. Review: I was hoping for an indictment of the misdirection of the latter day Democratic Party and a new vision for where to take the Party, but this book was neither. Instead, it is nothing more than 250 pages of a grumpy old man's ranting in the abstract and offering nothing to the reader but mindless polemic and infrequent anecdotes about how he used to walk to school in the snow uphill both ways, etc. This Texan was not impressed by Miller's supposed critique. Don't waste your money on this garbage rag of a book.
Rating: Summary: A Democrat Looks Candidly At the Granola Party Review: Granola is a cereal composed primarily of nuts, flakes and fruits. The term has also been used frequently to describe the People's Republic of California, and the Democrat Party.
This author skirts that description, but pretty well describes it. Miller is a self-described conservative Democrat. He reminds me of a politician in my own state, Oregon, who was against gun-control and a host of other idiotic ideas that those of the left-liberal orientation support. I once told him, "Kevin, why don't you switch political parties. You obviously don't fit in with the Democrats." Eventually, he did, and in fact ran for governor as a Republican. Unfortunately, in Oregon the tail wags the dog. The entire state is conservative except Portland, Eugene and Corvallis. Most of the population is in Portland, and Eugene and Corvallis are pointy-headed college town filled with left-leanin liberals wearing Birkenstocks and tie-dyed shirts. He lost. Many refer to the Dems as the party of the "working class," while the GOP is called "the party of the rich." What absolute nonsense! Miller says he was "born a Democrat" and would always be one. I became a Republican in my majority. It has been said that when you are young if you are not a liberal, you have no heart; when you are old, if you are not conservative, you have no brain." There is something to that. The "have-nots" of the world (usually, that means the young) always strike out for change. They want socialism, because they seek a "piece of the pie" and want the wealth re-divided, in order to automatically be given wealth they have not earned. The older people, who have worked for what they have, are of course against re-dividing the wealth that they have earned. They are therefor conservative, and against rapid change in the rules by which which they have lived . Urbanites, who typically live from paycheck to paycheck, find themselves more dependent on government than those who live in a rural environment and are more independent, raising their own food. Thus the large urban centers, where the paper-shufflers live, tend to be more in favor of socialism. It's the same the world over. Zell Miller was a farm boy, and his message tends to reflect those down-home Southern values. He wanted to help the poor, but not support them for generations. He thought 48 months of welfare payments was long enough--he favored teaching them skills so they could work and support themselves and get off the dole. And he took heat for his beliefs from the liberals in his own party. He speaks plainly in this book about his core values and the things he has tried to do. Probably he will never change parties, but his values are more in tune with the GOP than the Granola Party. He supports G.W. Bush for president, is against gun-control and abortion--at least "late term" abortion--and seems to think it is better to be self-supporting than on the dole. In other words, he is a Southern Democrat, which the "Down East" liberals have never understood, and likely never will, and that is why they will never carry the South--a point he clearly makes. Rating: Summary: A masterwork Review: If you tend to be what is charitably called "politically correct," these days, or are squeamish about facing facts, and prefer to accept the liberal doctrine espoused by academia and the liberal press and the Clinton administration, you will probably avoid this book.
Zell Miller is best known as a Democratic senator from Georgia. His thoughtful expositions of his own party have been violently attacked in the press by the liberal apologists who refuse to look at the facts without their rose-colored glasses on, and they will no doubt attack this volume with equal virulence. But, whether they face it or not, race is a problem in the United States. Although diversity is hailed as a great boon to society by the liberal bed-wetters, why is it that race remains such a divisive force, and such a great problem, ranking even above AIDS, crime, welfare abuse, and teen pregnancy? And why is it that blacks are at the top of the list in all of the above problem areas? It is well established that blacks and Hispanics have higher rates of crime, illegitimacy, poverty, and even death rates from many diseases than whites. Why is that taken as decisive proof that America is racist? Why are Asian ghettos seen by their inhabitants and others as places of refuge from crime and violence, while black ghettos are seen as breeding places for epidemics of those same societal blights? Why is it that, worldwide, in study after study, East Asians are tested as having higher IQs than whites, while African blacks on average test 30 points lower? (Those of mixed race, which account for most in the United States, test, as might be expected, only 15 points lower.) If the societal benefits of diversity so enhance our culture, why do white Americans universally flee from all its great benefits, and leave all the cultural enrichment available in East St. Louis, South Central Los Angeles, Detroit, Monterey Park, Washington, D.C., and all the other environments where the greatest diversity abounds? It is often proposed that our "racist" society teaches blacks, in particular, to "hate themselves." In actual fact, the continual hammering by the liberal press is teaching blacks to hate whites. a natural reaction to the constant barrage from television news and the press that their problems are caused by racist white people, and the not-so-subtle suggestion that our police, courts and prisons are all racist, imprisoning them unjustly for murder, rape, assault and other crimes. This book looks at the facts, the physiological, mental, emotional, sexual and cultural differences. It is not about "white supremacy." In fact, if anything, it demonstrates Asian superiority, with the white race somewhere in the middle. If you wonder what will happen if the present immigration and affirmative action trends continue; if you think that the great moral battle for racial equality in all things is justified, and the "civil rights" battles of the 'sixties were a great boon to the United States, perhaps this is a book you should read. On the other hand, if you are terrified of being labeled a "racist," or a "white supremacist," I wouldn't leave it laying around where your liberal friends will see it. In fact, it is a thoughtful book, written by a great senator, who has refused to be cowed by the attacks on him, which are a story in themself.
