Rating: Summary: BEST BOOK ON RAISING BOYS EVER! Review: My dad gave this book to me when my son turned 1. I really like it. Its a hard book to put down because there are so many interesting points in it. I'd really recommend this book to any parents of young boys.
Rating: Summary: Great reading for parents of boys Review: Dr. Dobson has done it again! Another great book helping people be better parents and in this case, giving those of us who are parents of boys greater insights as to how our sons' tick. He then gives us practical advice and spiritual insights on how to get them to adulthood. I definitely would recommend this book to anyone searching for help with their boys!
Rating: Summary: Not What I Had In Mind Review: When I purchased this book, I expected to get good advice on how to parent my son. Instead, mixed with some reasonable advice were completely irrelevant and offensive sections on homosexuality and the evils of working mothers. I was most offended by Dobson's homophobia and it's incorporation in a book billed to be a book on parenting
Rating: Summary: If you want to do it right! Review: I've read several books written by Dr. Dobson. I picked this title hoping to be enlightened. As a single mother of an almost teenage son, this book is a God send. It has given me scientific understanding of the intricate way my son thinks. It has shown me how to appreciate my child. This book has also shown me how important it is for me to celebrate my son's masculinity. Femininity may be more graceful, polite, and serene, but it is not BETTER than masculinity. Dr. Dobson has eloquently made it "OK" to be a masculine male in this society.
Rating: Summary: Provides few specifics for raising boys. Review: If you are looking for specifics of how to bring up boys this is book is probably not for you. The positive recommendations of the book are the presence of a strong father, a stay at home mother, home schooling, and a Christian faith. The author sees these as key to successfully raising boys. However, much of the book is devoted to negatives. A substantial portion of the text warns about of the dangers of the media, feminists, gays, public schools, "postmodernism", and the government. For example, the words "feminist" and "feminism" (accompanied by the adjectives "noisy", "radical" and "activist") appear fifteen times in four and one half pages of Chapter 2. In a university class on Logic I learned that analogies do not provide a logical proof. Analogies abound throughout this book.If you are interested in books on child rearing written by a Christian author you can find better. For example, while not dealing specifically with boys, "Who's In Charge Here?" by Dr. Bob Barnes provides many concrete ideas and specific suggestions for successfully raising children and in the process "badmouths" no individuals or groups.
Rating: Summary: Pass it up Review: Mr. Dobson has some interesting insights into boys and how they think, but I feel he has anti-women and homo-phobic issues of his own. Reading this book initially caused me to doubt my own instincts as a mother. I would recommend reading The Discipline Book by Dr. Sears instead.
Rating: Summary: Truth in Advertsing Review: Title should say ... "according to the Bible" ... to explain why mothers should backoff at 18mo age. What people need is balance, and if mothers are 'observers' the boy will think that all women are to be passive. Be selective (obviously) how you take the suggestions ... its not the gospel truth.
Rating: Summary: Dr. Dobson does it again Review: Dr. Dobson is able to put his thoughts together well. I bought the audio CDs and have enjoyed them tremendously. If you are raising boy(s) in this world this is a must have. Dr. Dobson gives practical advice to Dads, Moms, and Grandparents alike. Very informative in every aspect of a young boys life. Also, Wayne Shepherd does an excellent job reading.
Rating: Summary: The Perfect Gift for New Parents of a Male Child Review: Excellent advice, well written and documented. A perfect gift for the parents of my new grandson.
Rating: Summary: mothers and sons Review: I agree with Dr. Dobson's message that boys are facing tremendous trials in our world. I feel, however, that he is a bit heavy-handed when discussing feminism. I agree that radical feminist ideas have hurt men--they've also hurt women--but, I don't believe they are the main source of ill in our world. If anything, it's the breakdown of the family (which he discusses) and the fact that our world has mostly turned from God. I also don't agree with his assessment that mothers ought to become bystanders in their son's lives after they reach 18 months. I hope mothers everywhere will look to God for personal insight on how to raise their sons; He knows better than anyone the needs of our boys.
