Rating: Summary: Okay read Review: My first Dan Brown book was THE DA VINCI CODE. While I liked that book, his best effort, in my opinion is ANGELS & DEMONS. This book, DECEPTION POINT, follows third if you ask me. All are well-written and fun. Also recommended: McCrae's BARK OF THE DOGWOOD
Rating: Summary: Not my cup of tea Review: This guy's book was supposed to be so hot and amazing, but it just didn't do it for me,. I loved the Davinci Code so much more.
Rating: Summary: . . . but I hated myself in the morning Review: This book proves the value of story over credibility. Take a labored premise, adolescent dialog, and "Wile E. Coyote" action sequences tied together with a series of deus ex machinae that would embarrass a high school freshman writing his first short story, and you have an inkling of what "Deception Point" is like. Literature it ain't, but it is one heck of a read. This potboiler of Washington politics, popular science, fears overcome, and love reawakened will have you leaping from page to page.
Rating: Summary: Page turning mystery (with a few holes) Review: There are two ways to review this book. The first way is simply to say I read it without wanting to put it down as it was fast paced, exciting and a fun book to read. The second way is to say that it was based on a totally ridiculous premise and was way way over the top. If you get hung up on technical problems, unrealistic scenarios, villains that make dumb mistakes and hero's that get rescued at the last second by miraculous means, then skip this book because it will just make you mad. If, however, you can look past the problems and just enjoy the story, you'll enjoy this novel as Brown is a strong story teller. It was a lot of fun to read and I look forward to the next one.
Rating: Summary: Solid Read Review: Very good book. Full of action to keep you reading from chapter to chapter. Very Good character development. I am a very selective reader and I suggest this book to anyone wanting a Good solid page turner.
Rating: Summary: Deception Point Review: I have been a Tom Clancy, Robert Ludlum, John Grisham, David Baldacci Fan for many years. My first Dan Brown Book was The DeVinci Code, WOW ! Deception Point is a must read, it grabs you early and holds your attention throughtout the book. Dan Brown is at the top of my favorite authors, and I am anxious for his next book.
Rating: Summary: Brown is a great author and storyteller Review: Dan Brown is rapidly becoming one of my favorite authors. His stories are all well written and sometimes researched ( to a point). The story is a real page turner, and his characterizations are decent but not top notch. However, in order to enjoy Dan Brown you have to get used to the fact that Brown ignores technical details in favor of dramatic license. It can be really annoying at times. For an author who does such thorough and accurate research into meteor geology, his ignorance of simple things becomes even more grating. Here are two examples that will not spoil the novel for any who has not read it yet: It would be impossible for a 2 man sub to manhandle an 8 ton meteroite under water or otherwise. A solid mass just does not have enough bouyancy to offset the weight. The descriptions of the pressure effects on a body are total and absolute nonsense and do not really add that much drama to the story - I was too busy laughing. There are plenty more, but I suppose they do not take away too much for the otherwise passable novel. I like Dan Brown and I will probably read anything he writes. He is on my "B+" list. but Dan PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE get a technical advisor!!! Call me, I will do it for free. PLEASE.
Rating: Summary: Very enjoyable Review: This book was not as spectacular as Angels and Demons or the Da Vinci Code but is a much better novel than Digital Fortress. I thought the character Rachel Sexton was a great character, as was Tollard. I also liked how the secret government agencies in this book have a bit more power and have more power and authorite than they seemed to in Digital Fortress. None of the suprises in this book are truly shocking and if you pay close attention or you are no stranger to this genre than you won't find any unexpected suprises but I did think everything wrapped up nicely and the author did a very good job as far as story goes. I recommend this book and I extrememly recommend Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons. 4 out of 5
Rating: Summary: Great characters Review: With "Deception Point," Dan Brown does a nice job of creating characters that drive the story, rather than vice-versa. If you're tired of plot-driven novels with thin, and often cliché, characters, then you're likely to dig this one. If you're into writers like Brown, Katherine Neville, Dennis Lehane, etc., then there's a new writer you should check out: GREG IPPOLITO. His most recent novel, "Zero Station," is a politically charged page-turner that pits its main Gen X character (John Saylor) against his Baby Boomer parents, teachers, etc., during the winter of 1991 -- in the heart of the Persian Gulf War. Right now, Ippolito is still a relative unknown (a friend turned me onto his work)...but this is a must-read. You can check him out and read an excerpt at: http://www.zero-station.net Don't miss it.
Rating: Summary: Just love being deceived? Review: If you loved The Da Vinci Code, chances are you will like this. Likewise, if you thought the DVC had shallow characters, foreseeable plot development, flaky facts, etc. you will find the same in DP. Being a conspiracy enthusiast, I thought even the conspiracies were shallow, if not highly amusing, especially the "wasteful" NASA and SETI vs "efficient" private industry. Somebody get Mr. Brown a program so he'll know which sides all the players are really on! Who do you think benefits from all the "waste" - most of which is highly classified? We're more than ready for an ET that looks like a giant louse, and now, thanks to Spielberg, maybe even one that looks like ET. Now there's a conspiracy!
